Alternate title: Mike Olt learning to play OF
You want him in the OF? Can he play other IF positions (like 1B, for example)?
So, you would turn a guy who is reportedly above average with the glove at an infield position into an outfielder? With the gaping hole at the big league club at 1st base? OK I guess.......
Just as long as he is above avg. at any other position besides 3B I'm cool with...but 1B would be nice.
Everything I read about this Olt kid tells me he's going to be here very very soon. Bring 'em on and thanks to whoever scouted him and brought that kid into the organization.
I'm not sure I'd call it a gaping hole. Learning 1B means there's just one more spot he can play at, right or left. Just thinking in terms of (A) flexibility to give him PA, (B) taking into account Josh and Nelly aren't here forever and COF looks a little weak down on the farm, and (C) hoping that Moreland healthy takes the job, with a platoony angle to it as Nappy and MY get PAs from that spot as well.
I doubt Olt starts the season in Arlington, so there's probably time for him to get a handle on 1B and COF.
After what I witnessed in the WS, gaping is my choice of words.
I did read somewhere that they have put him in the OF some in the minors, and while it hasn't been a total disaster, he lacks quickness to truly get to balls..ala Tex. The writer likened it to the Tex in the OF experiment the Rangers tried, and you saw how quickly he was brought out of that and put at 1st base.
Ok, lets pump the brakes on this Olt being here soon idea. First, the AFL is known as a hitters dream, Second, while I think he has the chops to stick at third (read the D tool grades out as between 60-70 on and 80 scale), the obvious reason why hes being moved is because of his power and of course Bel being here. But lets give this kid all the time he needs in the minors to fix his contact problems and really learn a new position....cause have also heard some scouts call him a better version of........Chris "CRUSH" Davis.
I say we sit on him, bring him on the big league team when he is ready, give him some playing time at DH/3B/maybe even 1B. And if we like what we see enough, get rid of Beltre in a couple years. That way we may get some value in return and get younger.
