What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
I know this website is about the Rangers, but i was curious to get some other opinions on it.
Currently the Marlins have offered substantial contracts to Reyes, Pujols, and Burhle. All trhee have been to the ballpark and have net with the Marlins, so things are looking serious. Reports say that Reyes is very close to accepting the deal. Most likely these contracts are short term deals. Not 6 or 7 years more like 3 or 4. But if they do sign all 3 or just even 1 or 2 the Marlins become an instant contender. Some people have said it is an awful thing for baseball, personally i kind of like it they arent in a small market, but they are treated like it. Not many fans at the games and not much coverage period. Yet they are able to make a serious run at 3 of the top FA's and maybe more. Think about an infield of Pujols, Reyes, and Ramirez along with a nice rotation that Miami has, its kinda scary to think about. Yet it is genius from the owners moving into a new stadium to finally attract some fans.
Pujols is considering an offer of roughly 4 years? Surely you jest. What would it be, $50m a year?
Their owner makes me wonder. They've won 2 WS, in 1997 and 2003. Other than that they've never made the playoffs. I recall that after the 1997 WS they had a fire sale. Not sure about 2003. But if some of these deals happen and the Marlins make the playoffs, they may very well make it to the World Series and win it, and then disband the team next year.
But if they do win it, at least they'll be wearing some fairly silly uniforms, which I believe were primarily designed by the owner himself.
Right now theyre essentially the New Jersey Nets of baseball during the Lebron sweepstakes. Lots of talk very little action and the most they'll come out with as theye big FA signing is a Travis Outlaw equivelant player.... aka a ridiculously overly paid role player.
If dont keep up with basketball, sorry, I dont have a better analogy.
Basically right now theyre following the Nationals logic of Free Agency. Throw money at any and everything that moves and see what sticks. Never works and you end up with Jason Werth for life; producing you nothing but the tears of shame of what could have been.
1. Changed name to Miami Marlins2. Have a shiny new stadium for 20123. Ozzie is their new managaer4. New uniforms5. And most shocking, they now have tens of millions of dollars to throw at 3 free agents.
I don't know what to think. This is a shocker to me. Whats going to happen to Gaby Sanchez and Hanley Ramirez if they DO sign these guys? My guess, strangley enough, is that they may move Gaby to 3rd and Hanley to the outfield, or Reyes to 2nd and Sanchez to 3rd. Could you imagine their lineup?
1. Bonafacio2. Reyes3. Ramirez4. Pujols5. Stanton6. Sanhez7. Peterson8. Buck9. (pitcher)
with a rotaion headed by a maybe healthy Josh Johnson, Mark Buerle, Anibal Sanhez and Ricky Nolasco?
I dont see them moving Hanley, he has said he is playing short or he isnt going to play and we all know how he is. He hardly plays in the first place.
Yesterday I read the Marlins offered Jose Reyes $90m for 6 years. I think the article said he was hoping for a deal worth $100m, but we'll see how that works out. Can you imagine them dropping more than $200m on Pujols and some amount, probably $50-100m, on Buehrle, in addition to that? Geeeez...I don't think even the Yankees have spent that much in one offseason.
