What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
Great News from earlier this evening
Now that he's safe, I found it pretty interesting to follow this whole incident and how it was covered/followed by the MLB/baseball community. Obviously Paterno was a huge story, but it took almost until the next day after he was kidnapped for ESPN to say anything, and even then it warranted about 15 seconds before moving on to the news of Papelbon's signing and back to the Paterno story. MLB Network's Hot Stove mentioned it at the beginning of their show on Thursday and maybe again tonight before moving on to 59 minutes of Papelbon and "where will Prince Fielder sign." The other shows (Intentional Talk, Clubhouse Confidential, etc) I don't think ever mentioned it.
More interestingly, though, was the reaction from the players, including some of his own teammates on Twitter. I lived in DC for a number of years until recently, so I'm a bit of a fan of the Nationals and follow a number of their players and other MLB players on Twitter. When the news first broke of his kidnapping, players from all over MLB tweeted about how their "thoughts and prayers" were with him, which has become a pretty meaningless phrase these days. Then immediately they went back to tweeting about their NFL teams, golf games, dinners they had with other people, video games, etc. I guess you don't want to draw too many conclusions from Twitter, and I'm sure not everyone is best buddies with everyone else in the league off the field, but it was kind of surprising to gauge the general reaction (or lack thereof) within the baseball community. I'm not sure what broader conclusions one should draw from this, if any, and it was hardly a scientific study, but this was one of the best catchers in the majors in 2011 (not that that should matter) with very little reaction among players and more coverage in the mainstream news than in the sports media.
Obviously MLB and the Nats were pretty quiet about all this, but that was clearly because they were either involved or following behind the scenes developments. I did also read that Miguel Cabrera, also Venezuelan, was either in contact with the family or possibly with the family, and Nats teammate and Venezuelan Jesus Flores had a particularly effusive and ecstatic tweet once he had been found, but had to play yesterday and today in his VZL games.
Thank God. That could have been a disaster.
