What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
I know Wandy isnt the big time ace we would all like to pick up, but in the end he could be the right move. The astros are willing to deal him, and it would be realatively chep to aquire him. It wont take the entire farm, it might not even take one of our top 5 prospects. His stats arent great, but remember he has been playing for the worst team in baseball for quite some time now. With an offense on his side he could be a grreat #2.
Todd, this is a championship caliber team.
And in case you didn't hear it the first time. This is a Championship caliber team Todd.
Wandy is a good pitcher probably at his peak or declining. If we want to trade for a pitcher, it should be for an ace (insert list of pitchers everyone would love to have) or possibly a young promising guy with lots of potential upside (the first name that comes to mind is Cahill, which I heard someone throw around the other day). Wandy is neither of those. If we already had him he might be acceptable, but there's no reason to trade for him when we have 3 or 4 pitchers, most younger than he, of comparable skill.
Then again, the Astros' GM is apparently the second dumbest this year (behind the legendary Tony Reagins, of course), so maybe they'll let us have him for a bucket of baseballs and a bat to be named later. For that price I might consider him. But, realistically....nah. I'd rather re-sign Wilson, clean out the bank for Darvish, or trade a chunk of the farm for an ace.
I know this is a Championship Caliber team, but we had worse pitchers on our team this year than Wandy. Im not looking at him as the big guy we should go after, but if it comes down to it he could be a cheap easy pick up. He has had mediocre season, but he would improve if he actually had offense behind him. Im all about Cahill, but this way as andy said we could get him for a bucket of balls and a bat to be named later. It would add good talen while not losing the likes of Profar, Schep, Perez, Olt, and Skole. im sure i missed a couple big names there, but you get the point.
Todd - Not to rain on your parade, but Wandy is 32 and is due to make $10M in 2012 and $13M in 2013. It would still take a trade to get him. So would you rather have Cahill, who is 23 and slotted to make $3.5M in 2012 and $5.5M in 2013 and $7.7M the following year, or Wandy? I'd go with Cahill. The dollars are less, but the trade, I will concede, would take more. I don't think Cahill would "cost the farm" but it would take some nice pieces. but for a young, stud of a pitcher under team control for sometime? I'd be open to discussion with the A's. I would assume 1 or 2 nice pieces and 2 or 3 decent pieces. I'd do it today. I do however like your thought process of trying to find a gem in a mud bucket. Very J.D.esque. Typical thought process on pitchers is to seek out height. Wandy is listed at 5'11". He ain't even that. But he can pitch. I really don't think you had a bad idea. I just think there are better long-term options.
Plan A is resign CJ, Plan B outbid for Yu, Plan C: Oswalt,Jackson, even Bedard sign as free agents. All these plans loses no prospects or players only A higher team salary. Then and only then does Plan D kick in and that trade for pitching where Wandy would be a thought but only after: Danks,Cahill,Gonzalez, Jurrjens or Billingsley. Or Plan D rebuilds like Volquez or a real long shot who once had huge upside: Scott Kazmir. Which poses the question where is Kazmir and how is his left arm, FB back to 94 range. So Wandy is a thought, but who do you drop from the current 5 that is clearly below Wandy as a starter. Even as L-starters current depth chart I rate higher or has vast potential well above Wandy: Holland.Harrison,Perez,De los Santos,Ross all MLB ready before the end of 2012 season. I even rate Kirkman and Lamb higher based on they are in the system as opposed to Wandy being costly and not.
I still can't believe we lost Beau Jones.
I'm not saying by any meas this is the deal we should make. I was just throwing this idea out here, he would be cheap(what we give up wise) alternative. I would much rather have Cahill. Not trying to say i wouldnt. just throwing out this idea.
As I stated Todd, I like your thought process. He is a nice piece. I think a TORP is priority. It seems as if we have a rotation of potential #2's. Not that that is a bad thing. i just want the missing link. I see that to be Yu.
