What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
This is not a fantasy thread where I state my case for some outrageous trade, or a nostalgic post wishing for Pudge or Vlad's ill-fated return. I am curious, however, of what teams would be legitimately interested in a trade for a defensive catcher such as Torrealba.
I would prefer Napoli to be the starting catcher next year, as I'm sure many would. And I am more than comfortable with Treanor being our cheaper backup over Torrealba, despite whatever marginal loss in offense that may mean. In my opinion, our pitchers also seemed to work better with Treanor in his time here than they ever seemed to with Torrealba. I'm not sure how there stats compare when it comes to throwing out baserunners, I imagine Torrealba is probably better, but not significantly enough for me to consider keeping him for that reason.
All that being said, what teams would bite at a trade whose package was topped with Torrealba. I would never consider just giving him away. So what modest package could we construct, and what could we expect in return realistically?
Maybe an avg. bullpen arm + 1 middling prospect? I don't know, though... I think the catching depth across the league is pretty low, so maybe you get more for him... As far as which teams would be in the hunt, it would have to be teams that would want him to be their starting guy, since he's pretty expensive for what he gives you offensively as a backup. I'd have to look into it, but I can't imagine the number of teams interested would be that large.
I think it's a good question, and I'm curious what others' opinions are as to his perceived trade value.
Agree...a reliever and maybe a prospect. But I don't know which teams, if any, are seeking a starting catcher. Maybe the Dodgers now that Barajas has signed with Pittsburgh. I think it might have to be a team that is a little desperate at the time, I just can't see any team wanting to pay him that much just to be a backup.
Keep Torrealba so that Napoli can rest at first base. Its just too hot here to get by with one good catcher. The drop off to Treanor is just too great to live with for a full season.
I would really consider moving Yorvit and bringing Pudge back. Pudge and Nappy can split the time 40/60. It all depends on Pudge's price. As for Treanor, he will be headed back to KC. As for Yorvit? Apparently the Nationals now need a catcher.
Man, Pudge coming back sure would be nostalgic though. I wish they would have signed him again after the '09 season. I'm sure he would love to finish his career here.
P.S. I was listening to the news today and they were talking about a Nationals catcher getting kidnapped from his home, and I freaked out. Turns out it was Wilson Ramos. I was relieved, then ashamed of myself for rather having one guy kidnapped over the other. But, still relieved.
Pudge is spent Ricki and you know it
First off, not cool Ricky.
It would be nice to see Pudge back as a Ranger where he'd get some ABs and reach 3,000 as a Ranger. Pudge is unlikely to get to 3,000 anytime soon as a Nat. Ramos is going to be the everyday catcher, Jesus Flores will be right behind him looking for an opportunity (though he may also get moved somewhere), and the Nats have to put Derek Norris, their catching prospect on the 40-man or risk losing him. So the Nats, as with just about every position seemingly, are 2-3 deep at catcher before you even get to Pudge. Of course, it's unlikely to happen, but it would be nice to see Pudge get the ABs he needs to hit 3,000 - and it's unlikely to be DC where that happens.
You may see my previous post where I wished he and his family the best. I hope Ramos will be okay. Still no contact from the abductors last I heard. I always try to lighten the mood of a situation. Was it in bad taste, yes.
This conversation should be about the more serious side of what is happening, than hypotheticals.
I understand guys wanting to go home, but this type of thing is more and more prevalent in Central America. Urbina's mother was abducted when he was playing here for ransom.
It is hard for me to fathom that the "Southern portion" of the U.S. still has such corruption and crime. But I will digress from my political beliefs.
