What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
Chances are we're not getting Pujols or Fielder at 1st. Lets face it; and frankly i'm ok with it. Mitch had his moments that gave you that glimmer of home but had pretty much a well worse than expected year than most expected progressively. That being said, i think the wrist injury was underrated (ala Colby Lewis's hip injury granted he technically had more success) and shockingly FACE wasnt the worst FB replacement ever and we still have Naps. (one Caveat, i somewhat put blame on MY for game 6 if he had caught that easy shot at 1st Colby doesnt get pulled, Ogando doesnt make the game even closer dominoes dont fall etc.... its all in the past, just my opinion).
All that being said, i'm expecting Mitch to be our starting 1B on a rotation style basis with MY and Naps, however i feel Naps will actually be our starting catcher thus leaving an opening on the bench for a 1B. So how does anyone feel about Pena? Look I myself am not the biggest fan, but he does have upside when not posting pretty much some of the lowest OBP and BA in the history of baseball (did those words just come out of my mouth??? told you CrAzY), however what diff is he technically from Mitch last year, especially if you can sign him at pretty much the minimum, he'd be basically a bench/rotation 1B, but he can still hit the ever living $hit out of the ball (HR or nada) but has had success in RBPiA. I dunno just a thought... JD willing to throw out some shellings for a cheap powerbat with some decent 1B def capabilities. or is this idea just off the wall bat$hit crazy and I need to up the meds.... lol
Just stop it right now with the retreads. Pena-pudge-Sizemore-Vlad. WAke up folks-we are a world series team --Good Lord. JUST STOP IT
I'm in on that. Now that's thinking outside the box.
What a dumb f%$%#^ idea!!
Why is is a dumb idea? Pena's affordable, a better defensive 1B than anyone on our roster, and we've had success resurrecting older players in the past.
just bc we are a world series team does not mean there are not holes in this team that need to be filled. In the world of ALL sports if you are not improving your team youre; youre making it worse. There is no such thing as stagnation. With the recent rumors of YT being shopped its obvious the rangers believe theyve found their answer at C win Naps. The only problem is he's never remotely come close to an entire season behind the plate. with C being the absolute most physically taxing position (besides prob pitcher) in baseball, we'll need a back up C, plus this takes away at bats he would normally play at 1B. We're going to need another back up 1B that's not MY unless you honestly are putting your full backing on Mitch. If you are thats cool; not necessarily the direction i'd go, but if it turns out it was just the wrist there you go. Hell look at Feldman this year. Its obvious 10 was just a knee issue. I just think Pena might be a cheap resolution to back up Mitch at first and not add def liabilities that MY has at 1B. One especially on the cheap.
P.S. Anyone else pissed off they keep showing that St. Louis WS dvd collection advertisement on this site? just aint right....
How many first basemen do you actually need on a 25 man roster?
What is needed is top defense at first; Pena is at the top in that part of his game and a huge upgrade that would with Belte-Andrus and Kinsler would give the Rangers by far a shut down infield and best in baseball. However, it would cost 8 to 10m where Pena's bat would only be a bonus. Those negative on Pena were probably last year negative on Beltre. Having said that, Pena is not cost efficient where Plan C would be. Plan A currently is going with Moreland, that Plan C is develop Mike Olt as lights out defensive 1b man, who currently excels on defense at third and with more discipline could evolve into a solid power hitting first baseman. Then there is Plan D, get back C Davis, a major defensive upgrade over MM/MY/Napoli.
OK-listen up. Pena feels NO hole on this team. That's just ignorant.
lyle, i cant help but burst out in juvenile laughter at your last post. hell even if you spelt it right in "fills" no hole... its still funny as hell!
Pena is affordable because he struggles to hit .200. Just because he is affordable does not mean we should pick him up. Now if he would sign a minor league deal with a spring training invite I am in. I doubt Pena thinks he is to that point yet, and for all I know he might not be. Just sayin. I think Mitch gets another year with the majority of ABs at first, with Face and Naps getting some time there as well.
Pena is a joke of an idea.
Pena made 10M last year. You're not going to sign him for close to the minimum. I'm not sure if he's a Boras client or not but the guy has gotten paid pretty well over the past 4 years for putting up pretty awful #'s.
What is needed is top defense at first
If that were true Chris Davis would be the talk of all these forums rather than Fielder. It's not, so no. Just no.
The Cardinals won the World Series with the worst defense I've ever seen at 3B. Just saying.
We don't need the best defensive 1B in the league. Moreland is sufficient defensively, and Young and Nap are adequate backups. Our 1B, like pretty much everyone else in the lineup, needs to be able to hit.
That's why Chris Davis is a bad idea. He was unable to hit well here. Maybe in Baltimore he'll have better luck.
I don't think we need another 1B either, but if I were go for one, it would be Casey Kotchman- great glove, decent steady bat.
