What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
While the train wreck that was the final two games of the season is still smoldering -- and the throbbing pain that will be forever known as Game 6 Meltdown continues to ache -- we probably need to pick through this mess and find some points to ponder from the 2011 season. On one hand ...-- The team will forever be known as chokers who had two (TWO!!) chances to close out the series and didn't get it done.-- The strengths of this team all season, hitting and bullpen pitching, failed miserably in the final two games. Texas was also pretty good defensively during the season but was atrocious when it counted the most (we're looking at you, MY).-- The team, for the second year in a row, was beaten by an inferior team. Position by position, Texas was more talented than any on the Cardinals except for 1st base. Yet the Rangers lost, just as they did to the Giants. On the other hand...-- The Rangers were in the World Series for the second straight year. Regardless of the outcome, that's a great accomplishment, especially after disposing of a talented Tampa Bay team and a more talented Detroit team.-- The team has almost everyone back and has the wherewithal to build another run to the playoffs next year. At this point, I cannot see the club wanting to resign C.J. Wilson simply because he fell apart in the playoffs.-- A good farm system, a solid financial base and a very, very sharp front office are three things that longtime Ranger fans haven't had the luxury of enjoying. At least not all at once. This can only mean this organization is going to be stable and productive for a long time.Losing the World Series two years in a row is awful and somewhat embarrassing. Losing it the way the Rangers did this year is inexcusable. However, earning one trip to the World Series is something this longtime (since 1971) Ranger fan could only dream about during the past five decades. As an organization, the Rangers owe only one thing to the paying (tickets, merchandise and cable fees) public: to put a team on the field that is competitive and a championship contender as often as possible. The past two years have shown the organization is dedicated to that goal. This longtime Ranger fan has been thankful for this enjoyable run.
I think the guys have humiliated themselves badly and should probably consider either killing themselves, or retiring from baseball altogether. As Ricky Bobby's dad says, "If you ain't first, you're last!"
Perhaps that's a bit too harsh.
Perhaps he was being facetious. Also, our bullpen was pretty bad early in the season...so I wouldn't call it a "strength of this team all season". But I do agree with pretty much everything else.
On the other hand....you have five more fingers.
MY is complete garbage in the field. We basically went into the WS with another Vlad...but this was worse, b/c MY played every game.
MY did better at 1B than Vlad did in RF.
By far! And better on the bases. That comment was incorrect, Zach.
How many games did MY save us with his offense when one of Hamilton, Cruz, Beltre, or Napoli was out of the lineup with injury? I don't get the hatred of MY. You can't have everything - most ball players are not "complete." Rarely will you have a player who can do everything well. Mike does everything extremely well except defense and power - that's not bad. You take what you have and make the most of it. And as a fan, instead of lashing out at MY, I recognize how much he's given to this team over the years, and how much he helped the team THIS year.
I still contend MY was the MVP of this team.
This is going to sound snark filled, because I guess in a way it is...
The fact that MY was better at 1B than Vlad was in RF is like being the skinniest person at Fat Camp. Is that the standard we hold this team to?
MY = MVP of the team is laughable to me. Kinsler or Beltre both provided better offense and defense.
Getting to the original post, this team has a bright future. A bright future, however, does not mean going to the WS every year. I hope the fan base doesn't come to expect that and deem any season where this is not the case as a failure. As long as they are playing in September with a chance to get in the tournament, then this organization is headed the right way.
