What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
I found the World Series roster, and it helps me answer the question about outfielders.

PItchers, Oliver, Lowe, Wilson won't be back imo. Need more flexible outfielders, so replace Gentry?
three catchers? didn't need that this series at least. Barely used two. Add in maybe one more reliever.
Infield need a 1st baseman bigtime, but I think there is no way we go after Pujohls. has to be someone affordable.
Agreed. First base is an issue unless Moreland can fix that huge hole in his bat. Need to improve the bullpen a bit and find a bit more starting pitching. Love to have Fielder or Pujols here, but I can at least dream about that, right??
You're probably right on the pitchers. Koji's unhappy in Texas (and we're not thrilled with him either) so maybe he goes. I've seen enough of Esteban German to last me a lifetime.
I don't think there will be a Steinbrenner-like reaction to losing the series. Most will be back.
I think going after pujols or fielder is just plain stupid. Moreland had a down year, I know that but his rookie year he hit about .270. And why do we need to spend 20mil a year on an offensive upgrade to an offense tha was 3rd in the AL?
I am very tempted to ride out Moreland 1 more year. I also wouldn't mind getting rid of German, but I would keep Gentry that guy is under used and dynamic. He needs PA's.
I think there will be some big changes in pitching. A big question will be what to do with Feliz, whose control was something of an issue on and off all season long. Another question will be Feldman, who is never going to have a strikeout pitch, but whose cutter does make him unhittable at times. I would like to see them bring back Gonzalez to take Oliver's spot. I think Tateyama gets dropped, and Uehara traded. They'll probably lose CJ, which would make the depth chart for starters (if you include Feliz) something like: Lewis, Holland, Harrison, Ogando, Feliz, Feldman, Hurley, Perez, Ramirez. That's not a lot of depth, and some of those guys won't be ready in ST. So yeah - they are going to have to do something with the rotation. The bullpen could be vastly different if Scheppers is ready to take his turn as setup in Lowe's old spot, and Adams moves into the closer role. What do you do with O'Day? Who will be the primary 8th inning guy?
My guess is they try to trade for a starter, try to sign Darvish, try to sign another FA starter, and try to get a righty setup guy so they can move Feliz to the rotation and Adams to the closer role.
Regarding the offense, there should be some consistency there, unless they make some big, surprising trade. Napoli, Torreabla, Young, Kinsler, Andrus, Beltre, Hamilton, Cruz, and Murphy should all be back. Probably Moreland, too. They have a pileup at CF / 4th OF, with Gentry, Borbon, and Martin. Something has to give there.
Regarding German - remember he was only on the roster because Blanco got hurt. So of course he's a goner.
CJ is likely gone. Anybody who pays 5/$75 mil is stupid and desperate.
Murphy is likely non-tendered and goes somewhere else, guessing Houston. Having lefty hitters Martin, Chavez and Borbon here or in the pipeline makes paying millions for a backup lefty hitter a waste of $.
Olliver probably retires
Torrealba MAY be traded since he's an expensive part-timer
Don't see a point in selling low on Uehara, tell him to man up and be ready for spring. Not being too eager to trade him raises his price as well.
Available and reasonably-priced Free Agent I'd like to have is Ryan Doumit C/OF a left hitting catcher who hits righties.
If we sign Darvish, expect a big trade as we let some SP prospects go.
non free-agent trade targets: Jamie Shields, Matt Kemp
I think a Matt Kemp for Nelly Cruz, Torrealba and a pitching prospect is doable, if Kemp agrees to a contract extension.
Nelly Cruz and/or Josh are going to go somewhere else next year, sincwe we probably can't afford both.
I personally like Josh at 1B to keep him (hopefully) healthier, if so, we'll need another OF.
I'm afraid we'd be selling low in Moreland, like we've done with some other power-hitting 1Bs.
I hope Gonzalez stays...really like what saw with him with lefties. Josh at 1B is interesting as it would likely keep him healthy, but he's never played there and we have seen its not as easy to transition as you think. I would so love to swap for Kemp and Kershaw....send Cruz, Perez, Torrealba, and likely Ramirez. Prolly another prospect or two but that's a big change I would be happy with.
Chavez is a FA. Cruz and Hamilton will be here next year... they can't "walk". Treanor returns to KC. Torri remains here thru his contract, 2012. Then likely replaced by youth, not another FA catcher. Gonzalez is good. If Oliver does retire (which I hope), Gonzalez should be re-signed to replace him. I'd ride Moreland one more year and cross my fingers. I'd pursue the Darvish posting fee bid aggressively.I like Kemp, but at what cost? And outfield of Hamilton, Gentry / Martin, Kemp and DH Cruz? I'd take it. And that leaves Mike where? I love Michael Young. Growing pains tend to force out fan favorites sometime. Whether we sign a 1B man or not, the room for him is getting limited. He is smart enough to see that. And if Uehara wants to go home to Baltimore, I seriously would take Davis back again. I've always thought he was better than Mitch, and I still believe in Mitch. What a quandry & dirty laundry.
I think the lineup will be the same in 2012. Same outfield. Same infield.
The Bench improves. German will be gone (no loss there). Chavez will most likely be gone. Keep Gentry as he's got potential and some serious speed (may be the fastest player in baseball right now). Find a good veteran utility infielder with a steady bat.
Get the pitching straightened out (easier said that done, right?).
Don't sell the farm clubs to get players. This farm system has a lot of young talent that is very close to being on the opening day Ranger roster. Don't screw that up.
Uehara for Davis in a second...but that's not happening. Hamilton, Martin, Kemp would be amazing....having Gentry to swap Martin as well and Cruz as DH/RF. Young/Moreland to man first is good for another year as I rather have pursuit of pitching.
I'm good with that, Kenny.
I think with a rotation of Lewis, Holland, Harrison, and Ogando/Feliz we need to get someone who can at least pass for a TORP if CJ leaves - even if that person would only be here for a short time while the young guys develop and Holland (hopefully) gets closer to TORP status. If Oswalt would agree to a 1 or 2 year deal that could be an idea (no idea if he would, but he was contemplating retirement this year so who knows) or James Shields (who as a bit of a hothead might spark a brawl or two like someone was hoping for in another thread). I just think we need some kind of leadership (I know..yuk yuk) at the top, even if it's not a long term deal.
As for the bullpen, it sounds like Gonzo is eager to come back, which is good. I don't think you get rid of him - unlike Uehara, he did much better for the Rangers than the O's. You gotta hold onto Koji for at least the first half - if he's still under-performing and not happy, see if you can trade him back to the Orioles for....whatever Baltimore has to offer, or trade him somewhere else. I think you hold onto Yoshi - he was the only good thing in the bullpen for us the first half the year. Figure out why that went away. DO may retire or may stay - that's gonna be his own decision, but he was good for us all year. Feldy I assume would stay as your long man out of the bullpen if he doesn't make the rotation. And obviously Adams is back.
The Josh at 1B idea intrigues me. I just think you gotta hang onto him. I think Tex Pantego is right about Murphy, Torrealba, and possibly Nelly going sometime in the next year or two. I don't think Nelly, Chavez, and a prospect is going to be what LA wants for Kemp though - Nelly is 31 and injury-prone, Chavez is 33. Kemp is 27. However, expect Chavez to be in demand from other teams as a serviceable CF since that position is in high demand and low supply.
FACE scares me at first so badly. But, I would be okay with having him platoon with Moreland at first IF we get some big time pitching help and by big time i do not mean Darvish (not that I am completely against Darvish, just not at the huge prices everybody is talking about)
Uehara melted in the playoffs but his overall numbers aren't that bad. A uehara for davis trade doesn't really help the team much as one of MY/Moreland loses at bats to davis (when he plays) who's ABs aren't that good to begin with. Plus, when wash wants to spell Naps behind the plate and DH is already occupied by a hot hitter, someone will lose ABs. I just don't see how having Davis on the bench provides more on-the field potential value than Uehara.
I don't see how the rangers get kemp without a huge hit to the Farm. If the farm is going to be raided for a player, it should be a Kershaw/Felix type TORP, not an outfielder. There is more value to be gained from an ace than there is from an OF on this team at this time.
I hope the Rangers go aggressively after a proven ace this off season, and in my mind nobody in the minors is untouchable. Can you imagine how the WS turns out differently with our "ace" pitching 3 games of this past WS. Yes, i know hypotheticals mean nothing, but just take a moment and imagine. I also hope any other major moves are only addressed near the trade deadline to fortify the team's needs for the rest of the season.
Once again, Dan, Chavez is a FA. We can't trade a FA. Felix is signed thru 2014. Kershaw, I still believe, may be a doable trade once the Dodgers financial problems are resolved. It will then be time for them to resolve their farm weakness, which means dealing Kershaw, etc. Hell, I am in on Kuroda for that matter, and he is a FA. Say we get Kuroda and Darvish. Where do I sign? And Josh at 1B interests me. He'd do better than what we have platooned. Mike is too short to play there. I know he is listed at 6', but uf he is 6' tall, I am John Holmes. As much as it sucks to say, Mike is running out of positions on this team. And he won't be a bench guy.
For pitching, Kuroda and Edwin Jackson may also be possibilities - obviously not at #1s, but if the price is right. No idea what they're looking for.
Here's my out of left field idea: Livan Hernandez. I watched him a lot with the Nationals this year and I'm amazed what he can do with an arm that can barely get to the 80s. He lost about 5-7 low-scoring games by 1 or 2 runs due to a lack of run support from the Nats hitters. He does get hit around a fair bit, but he's got an uncanny ability to get out of jams. He also never gets flustered or frustrated, which could be very helpful with the younger pitchers we have who can sometimes lose their head if they get into a jam. I think at this point in his career he'd have to go in the pen in some type of long relief, but its still amazing to watch him use his slow junk to get people out. I'm sure it's not going to happen, but it was my crazy idea for the day.
Yeah Ricky - I thought Tex had said trade Nelly, Chavez and a prospect. I look back now and see that he said Torrealba, not Chavez. My mistake. Yes, I saw after I sent that that Chavez was a FA. Someone will take him b/c a lot of teams need a CF more than we do.
As for the proposed trade - I still don't see it being enough/the right players for the Dodgers
Not near enough, although keep in mind, Kemp is arb eligible this coming year (right now) and a FA in 2013. So if the Dodgers can't take the salary increase (And believe me he will get one) then they may opt for a Murphy, Torri, Mendonca, Chad Tracy, Osuna, Borbon type deal. Unload dollars and get youth and serviceable players under contract albeit for only one more year. Chavez is a nice piece, but he doesn't fit our puzzle. I upgrade out there. Use Josh at DH and playing the field, splitting with Cruz. Those guys have to stay healthy. Pitching, OF issues, and 1st. Resolve those and we'll see. I'd take a look at Josh @ 1B, but those who doubt Mitch will be sorely mistaken and probably won't show up on here again when he proves them wrong. But again, if Uehara wants to go home? I swap him for Davis straight up.
I don't doubt Mitch - I just assumed he'd be in some type of platoon anyway. I assume if Murphy does end up somewhere else, the OF would be Josh, Martin, and Nelly with Gentry platooning as needed (and Murph if he stays), with Gentry and/or Murph taking over in the field with Josh or MY at DH and the other one platooning at 1st (if you did try Josh at 1B) depending on who's pitching, day or night game, etc.
As for catcher, I would guess Yorvit would be a potential trade piece with Treanor staying as backup. I agree with whoever said Yorvit was a pretty expensive bench piece and he could be attractive to another team that needs a catcher. However, if you don't keep Treanor, do you still look to move Torrealba and bring up Teagarden as your first backup? I would think no, but I don't know - there doesn't seem to be another role for Torrealba except bench player and backup catcher.
Treanor returns to KC. It was a hand-shake agreement when the trade was made. And I am fine with Tea as the back-up. Include Yorvit in a package for a need. Unfortunately, your OF prediction is probably right. David Murphy is a great guy, excellent media friendly guy, just a solid dude all the way around. That said, I think he deserves to play everyday somewhere else. And I wish him the best.
Position players (subtract 1 total):
Murphy leaves (getting too expensive for a bench player)Chavez leaves (we have his replacement)
Moreland moves to the 4th OF/backup 1B/LH bench bat role of MurphyLeonys Martin becomes the starting CF, with Gentry as his backup/platoon
German leaves (he was only an injury replacement)Moreland moves to the OF group
Prince Fielder is your new 1BBlanco returns as the Uti in German's place
Treanor leaves (3rd C was a playoff luxury)
Pitchers (add 1 total):
CJ Wilson signs elsewhereMike Gonzalez signs elsewhereDarren Oliver retires
Yu Darvish moves into CJ's #1 spot in the rotationKoji Uehara gets his shit together and is a useful bullpen armNew LHP (not sure who) is added via FA for about $3m
Yoshi Tateyama, Mark Lowe, and Tanner Scheppers have a Spring Training duel for the last 2 spots.
I think you are close... very close. C.J. walks. We get Kuroda and Darvish. No Prince. Gonzo stays (re-signs). Moreland gets the vote of confidence from the old school brotha. And I really, truly expect some additions we do not even have on our radar. Typical JD.
Sizemore could be had now as a probably very cheap 4th OF'er now..something to chew on. I did see that Gonzalez seems pretty emphatic that he wants to be back. This looks to me to be an easy Darren Oliver replacement, as game 6 claims another casuality in the form of his retirement. I think one of Darvish, Sabathia (if available), Fielder, or Pujols needs to be gotten, and I have no doubt the Rangers will pursue all 4 if at all possible. Also, I do believe Wilson will be gone, BUT, I would like to see him back IF Darvish, Shields, Sabathia, Kershaw, etc etc are brought in as well, would be excellent, but just sign CJ and call that the pitching upgrade? No thanks.I think a surprise trade along the lines of McGriff/Fernandez for Carter/Alomar happens. A trade that would be/seem unpopular at the time, just as in Toronto, but in time will be seen as the vehicle that sent the team over the top, not only once, but twice!! I think a few of the hungover "we were one strike away" guys will need to be purged, this is why I think a trade should happen...hell, Mike Adams is already out there talking that line up in interviews. Now, I stated "I think" a ton of times there, cause as Ricky stated in another post, I to am not on the payroll, so that's all I'm stuck with is I think's and I wish's. But JD did tell Ken Rosenthal last night "we need to get better" and I THINK we can infer from that, some things of great magnitude happen this offseason.
By pursuing all 4, I don't mean all 4 of them on the team..I mean trying to land one of them, felt carification was in order.
All we can do is speculate...we'll leave the actual work to the team. I can also see a surprise trade.
That said, I think Gonzo stays. Game 6 could just as equally piss DO off as it does drive him into retirement. I could see him looking at what the Rangers have and deciding to give it one last shot. But he says he's mulling it all over now, so who knows. I don't see Prince or Pujols being worth the price tag, but I've already said that so I'll leave it there. I don't disagree with anything else Scooby said.
Afir - are you saying that the Rangers should be going after (in a way more serious than just covering bases and playing the field) Pujols, Fielder, Darvish, Sabathia, Shields, and Kershaw? Seems a bit optimistic...and expensive, no?
