What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
These guys don't get the national spotlight they deserve. Young has a career .304 AVG, 169 HR, 917 RBI, .350 OBP, 2061 H, a Gold Glove, a 6 time All-Star, and known as a professionals professional throughout the MLB. Beltre has a career .276 AVG., 310 HR, 1113 RBI, .329 OBP, 2033 H, 2 time Gold Glove winner, 2 time Silver Slugger, and a 2 time All-Star. Both of these guys have years left to keep padding these stats. But it makes me wonder by the end of their careers with these stats currently would a ring make these guys automatic Hall of Famers or do they still have some flaws according to HOF voters?
I think if they continue to produce and hit the key stat of 3,000 hits, it would be a no brainer. 'If" is a big word for only having two letters. But both have a shot at it.
I think Beltre will get in. I think he will get to 3000 hits, and win a couple more GGs.
I think both have potential, but time will tell. Getting 3000 hits is virtually a shoo-in (the only eligible player with 3000 not in the hall is Palmeiro, whose image is tarnished by PEDs...so he may or may not make it), so I imagine either of them would if they achieve that milestone. Other than that, a career .300 BA is helpful, as is hitting 400-500 HRs. Gold Gloves are helpful too, I suppose, but I think some of the BBWAA know the award is sometimes a farce given to a player simply because of his past record...
Of the 2, I think Beltre is slightly more likely to make it, as he's a couple years younger and has hit more HRs, so he has more time to reach those milestones. Plus, everyone knows his defense is insane, even if he doesn't have a GG every year. Young could make it, but I think his best chance of doing so is getting to 3000 hits. If he produces as the level he did this year he'll hit that before he's 40.
And these are 2 of the oldest guys on our team. Who knows what the other guys will eventually do? We might have a few other possible HOFers on our team...
Don't forget Pete Rose, Andy, but we all know why he isn't in the HOF.
