What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
Just let it go. He is in all likelyhood not going to be much of a 1st baseman (offensively at least). He isn't going to be a Prince, Albert, A-Gon, Konerko, Teixera, Helton, Cabrera, (healthy) Morneau, etc. Hell, this year he didn't even have the WAR of fellow youngster like Ike Davis, Daniel Murphy, Eric Hosmer, Justin Smoak, Freddie Freeman.
I'm about to get off work, but I would be willing to bet that of all 1B to start at least half their team's games at 1B, he was bottom 5 in the MLB this season.
I'm glad you weren't in charge of scouting Nelson Cruz
1. Nobody knows whether he'll end up any better than he has been or not. Speculate all you want, but nobody knows for sure.2. If Mitch isn't what the club needs at 1B, they'll find someone who is. They have the resources and the skills to get good players. They'll do their job.3. I'm not sure what to put here, but I don't think lists should have fewer than 3 items.
As I have said before, 1st base is not our strongest position, and most likely our weakest. But that does not qualify it as a position of necessity. That one position allows us to have the luxury to use the multiple talents that we have and need to keep involved on the field and in our line-up, being Young, Napoli, and Moreland. We have other "needs" . We also NEED to keep this team together, which will raise this pay-roll substantially to do so, not only this year, but the next, and the next. So spending big $ for a FA at 1B, who would take playing time away from Mike or Napoli or even Moreland? I don't like it. A large FA contract would do as much.
Andy is 100% correct. Lists should have at least 3 items.
Oh, and unless we're going to sign Pujols or Fielder, I say give Moreland one more year as 1B. You don't want to judge someone with only one full season behind them.
Very true, Commander and Andy.
I guarantee you Prince Fielder would more starting those 89 games Moreland started, Ricky. And unless we sign a free agent we wont have a choice. Granted, making sure that our top of the rotation is good is more of a free agency priority, but our 1sr base is well below league average, and is the next thing in line.
You obviously didn't read my point, or cannot comprehend it.
Here, I will post it in caps for you...
IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE A FULL-TIME POSITION FOR A HIGH PRICED FREE AGENT WITH THE PERSONNEL WE HAVE AND WHAT HAS WORKED ALL YEAR!
Hope that helps!
If we can grab Fielder at a decent price (which is within the realm of possibility considering Boston and Yankees are likely out of the bidding), I say grab him as long as he agrees to some weight gain penalties. I'm not sold on the clubhouse fit though, because he's had some anger issues in the past. Not Milton Bradley level, but still, the Dude once tried to charge into the Dodgers dressing room to go after a Dodger. That's loosing your cool big time.
If not, a platoon of Moreland/Nappy/MY isn't too bad. Especially seeing how we're not adding payroll with those 3, and that means $ that can be used possibly for Darvish or some other deal. Making Nappy the full-time catcher is a bad idea considering the wear and tear. Spot starting him at 1B and DH will keep him fresher.
Besides the fact that I think Moreland hasn't hit his cieling, just his ability to play the OF decently gives us some more options if/when Nelly has injury issues.
If we're going to sign Josh to a long-term deal, I think moving him to 1B has to be on the table. It's a lot safer positon for him to play.
In other words, I think we're okay at 1B as is, and can upgrade if the price is right.
1. This year, Moreland had a wrist injury which affected his swing. His walk rate was cut in half, and his power (ISO) dropped from .214 to .155. Do you know of many players who's walk and power rate dropped in their age 25 to age 26 season? I'm pretty sure he'll be back on track next season.
After Moreland recovers in the offseason and works with Coolbaugh to work on his approach to pitches outside the zone, he will be himself again.
Moreland will be fine...
2. I have trouble believing you legitimately think we have the payroll flexibility to sign both a TORP (WIlson, Darvish), pay the arbitration salaries our eligible players will receive, AND sign a $20 million dollar a year player like Fielder. Even though NY and BOS are out of the race for a first-baseman due to their comical contract conundrums (hello, Texiera!), they are most certainly IN the race for a TORP, given that NYs rotation currently consists of A.J. Burnett and Ivan Nova. That's right, a fastball pitcher with no velocity, and a second-year 4th starter ceiling player. BOS is no better with a rotation consisting of Beckett, Lester, and Buchholz, and that's it. Those guys are good, but I hear there are some character issues....
According to the links section of Buster Olney's column yesterday, the Cubs are not expected to get into the Pujols/Fielder sweepstakes. If that's true, wouldn't that logically depress the price for Fielder at least? Just something I was thinking, since that would mean that the Yankees, Red Sox and Cubs won't be driving the price up on them.
@Luke: I think you can go ahead and add C.C. to that list. I find it hard to believe he won't be a Yankee next year.
Moreland with be just fine next year - give the kid a break. He's only in his second year; remember Cruz needed 4-5 to break out. Patience all. A little Coolbaugh time and he'll be producing.
Of course we all love Nellie and his story , but it is a VERY rare story. We can't count on Mitch being another Nellie story. I love MM but if we have the $ and if Boston/NYY/Phil/ChiCubs are out of the running... Why the hell wouldn't you add Albert or Prince to this roster? Also, it would give us extra insurance if Josh keeps having these sub par little to no power injury riddled seasons. Playing time for MY would decrease and that wouldn't be such a bad thing either. I love M.Y.'s drive and tenacity but he sucks as a corner infielder and his days in the middle are long gone.
@ Ricky. Because it can be improved! If you have the means to improve it, then go ahead and freaking improve it! Maybe next year, instead of winning 96 games and the world series in 6-7, we can win 101 games and the Worlds Series in 4-5!
@Luke. I know the chances of us signing a Fielder/Pujols and a Wilson/Sabathia/Darvish are so slim its not even worth talking about. I was just saying, if we are going to make a free agent splash, a TORP would be of better value than a 1B, but if the TORPs fell through, then 1B would be our next shot.
