What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
I love Jim Thome. One of the classiest and best players in the game. I was wondering if maybe since Mitch isn't doing so hot at first right now that the Rangers would think about planting Young at first and revisit signing Thome this offseason as our primary DH. What do yall think?
Jim Thome is 41 and WAS one of the best players in the game. Our flexibility with a number of guys who can DH and play multiple positions is ideal. Thome fits none of that. As far as class and good guy in the room, that coincidentally describes Moreland as well, who is in his 2nd year in the league. Thome didn't exactly light it up in his intial few years in the big-leagues. Who had more HR's this year, Moreland or Thome? Moreland (15/16) Who had a better average? Moreland (.256/.259). Yes Moreland had more opportunity and AB's, but that is because he is young and healthy and capable. $3M for a part-time player in Thome versus $426K for Mitch? I take Mitch hand-down.
I like Thome too, but I like the way the Rangers are now. Their "regular" DH also can play any IF position, though not as well as the other guys we usually play there (except possibly Mitch). I don't see Thome doing anything but DHing at this point in his career. So, if we make a move at 1B, I think it will not be to put Michael there full-time, but to add another 1B (free agent, trade, whatever). I'm not sure what we'll do...there's a lot of speculation about us possibly trying to sign Prince or Pujols, and some talk about maybe trading for Joey Votto. Haven't heard any of this straight from the horse's mouth, though, so kinda have to take it with a grain of salt right now.
TL; DR: Seems unlikely.
Disagree, I would rather have Mich develop into a full seasoned 1st baseman. He only started 89 times at first base this year. He's never going to improve if he keeps getting taken out of the lineup randomly.
If you check his gamelog, then you will see that his best 3 months of the seasons were when he only missed 2-3 games..Apr BA .280OBP .376

You can't honestly expect Mitch to improve if he keeps getting taken out of the lineup constantly or not play at all.Sep DNP in 10 gamesBA .167OBP .189
I think Thome will retire.
Do you think we would trade Moreland for pitching and put Mike Young at 1B, and maybe sign somebody like David Ortiz to be the full time DH? He's probably a better option than Thome.
No, I don't. That one position gives us the flexibility to utilize Young, Napoli, and Moreland on a given day, in a given line-up versus a given starting pitcher. The DH and 1st both do. So filling either the 1st base role and / or the DH role with a FT player, makes no sense, especially if they cost you a ton. We are in the WS for a reason. Those two positions have been an intregal part.
Just say no to Thome.
Just say no to anyone other than Michael Young being our DH. I'd pontificate about how much flexibility it gives us, how it seems to have rejuvenated Face, or how it limits our exposure to dropoffs in production due to injury, but I'd much rather just say if it's not broke don't fix it. DH was a position of strength for us this year. No one on the market is a good enough bat to justify forcing Young back into everyday field duty.
Commander is genius yet again. One of the few who truly gets it.
