What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
I told my wife the second the first pitch was thrown that the Tigers were making a HUGE mistake intentionally walkling Adrian Beltre to face Mike Napoli.
This was based primarily on the fact that since fouling a ball of his own knee/shin in game 3 that Beltre has looked anemic at the plate and clearly is not the same guy who banged 3 HRs against the Rays in game 4 last Tuesday.
Furthermore, walking him brought up the league's best hitter for the last half of the season. That just didn't make sense to me. And while everyone is excited about Nelson Cruz's 3-run bomb the key hit in the inning was Napoli's RBI knock.
I think Leyland made a monumental blunder in that decision.
Hard to disagree with that. But like our walking Cabrera, it was a risk. With Josh on 2nd, there's no double play force. With Beltre on 1st, an infield double play is probably easy to turn. It worked out for for us, but not for them.
Yeah, the DP possibility is part of the equation except Valverde is flyball pitcher and Nap hit into relatively few (10) DPs. Also, unless he was able to get a DP it meant Cruz was going to bat. I still can't understand that decision.
