There is more to Leyland's Verlander call than just whether he wants to send Verlander out twice on short rest. Let's examine the current plan versus the "get Justin out there two more times" plan.

So, to get two more starts for Verlander . . . you either have to have every remaining start on 3 days rest if you opt for Scherzer on Thursday . . . or you throw Porcello on Thursday and Fister (who has been darn good) only gets one start in the series.
If you don't like those options then you let Porcello go in game 4 and you have Verlander, Scherzer and Fister on full rest for 5, 6 and7.
Discuss . . .
let's hope we don't have any rain delays of a day or longer, because right now, we've got a huge advantage in pitching rest. to get even, the Tigers need a day of rest.
I think you only see the Verlander X 3 scenario if the Tigers are down in the series after game 3. But, there's something else for Leyland to consider - Fister and Porcello are the type of offspeed artists that tend to cause the Rangers hitters fits. I'd say having them back-to-back, and allowing Fister two starts, would be a more effective use of resources for the Tigers. Unless, of course, the Tigers are on the ropes after game 3, down 2-1 or 3-0. Then, you've got to go with your best, meaning Verlander.
Weather is also going to be a big wild card. Looks like a 50/50 shot of getting the game in at all tonight. Hope for that big glop of mess in central/southeast Texas to hold together all day, thus giving a better chance of dry weather this evening. The last thing the Rangers need right now is a weekday afternoon make-up game. I want this game finished tonight.
I think down 2-1 it's Verlander 4/7 with Porcello and Scherzer on full rest in 5/6. That's my best guess. Up 2-1 they go Porcello/Verlander/Scherzer/Fister.
With Game 2 delayed until Monday things get clearer. If they let Verlander go Wednesday it would look like , , ,

I don't see them throwing Fister only once and I don't see them wanting to have Porcello go in game 5 and three pitchers throwing on 3 days rest. In all likelihood it will be the original rotation.
