What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
You are gonna use Puljos and Prince as a measuring stick for Moreland? A first year FT 1B w/ 16 HR, and you are gonna bail on him at his salary? And YOU said "Dynasty", not me. To me, that means with the same guys. Go with your plan, over pay, lose, and enjoy a Dave Hostetler type amusement park, spackled in with spares. This ain't fantasy baseball, Taylor. I appreciate your being a fan and your enthusiasm, and your passion.
If the Rangers win the WS like the OP says, money will not be the issue you guys are making it out to be and I could see the Rangers being in the top 5-8 salaries in baseball going forward.
And I WOULD BE SHOCKED if there is not at least talks with Fielder this off season. We have a team good enough to win it all now, imagine Fielder in place of Moreland... damn.
I think you have to accept there is a chance the Rangers make a run at Fielder. This team is setup to win now. How many more years are we going to have Josh, Nellie, Michael, Ian and a healthy Beltre together? Maybe just 1.... Moreland is a fine player and may become a great player in a few years, but I'm pretty sure the 2011 off season is going to be focussed on building a 2012 World Series contender..... Saying that, I think the chance of Fielder playing for the Rangers next year is less than 10%.
If Nolan's backers want to just empty their accounts, I suppose we could shell out for Prince. But I find it hard to believe they, or J.D., would spend anywhere NEAR that $200m for Prince, for a team that already rivals the Yankees for best offense, when we could spend about half that and lock C.J. up for what will likely be his prime starting years.
If there's a 40-50% chance we keep C.J., as someone posted earlier....I'd say there's less than a 20% chance we get Prince, GIVEN that we don't keep C.J. If we do keep him, I'd say less than 5% chance we get Prince. I just don't see us taking on that much payroll all at once. The Rangers are not the Evil Empire.
The talk of signing Fielder is so much folly and cheap speculation. He is not a "Ranger" type player. As Ricky said, this isn't rotisserie. You can't (and don't need to) have a WOBa of 400+ at every position on the field. Chemistry and balance matter, as does locking up your young, homegrown core. We can do a lot of good (flexible, long-term good) with $20M per year, but spending it on a flabby and expanding dude with two of the five tools is not the Jon Daniels/Nolan Ryan way.
