What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
A tech blog that I read regularly posted this review of an article that was originally in the June issue of the American Economics Association Journal. Essentially the original article is about umpire bias based on ethnicity of the pitcher and whether or not the stadium has the QuesTec system in use. I haven't seen any of the major outlets pick up this story but the argument is pretty compelling. Mostly, I was wondering if anyone had an in depth review of their methods and outcomes and if the effect actually mattered.
Here's the review from Ars: http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2011/09/umpires-show-ethnic-bias-in-ballstrike-callsunless-theyre-feeling-watched.ars
The original article is called: Strike Three: Discrimination, Incentives, and Evaluation.
I can get the article through the TAMU library but its behind a paywall if you're not at TAMU so I won't post it here; but if you'd like it I can probably e-mail it to you. It long but a pretty good read I think.
