What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
Sup, Baseball Timers!Jason Cole was kind enough to do a Q&A on WFAA.com with me about possible September callups. Give it a look; this thing has 2,000+ words of golden prospect info.http://www.wfaa.com/sports/headlines/Rangers-Reinforcements-An-inside-look-with-Jason-Cole-128586598.htmlAnd if you have any questions about the article or any part of the site, please e-mail me -- email@example.com.
Really good article. It does make me worry a little bit about our AA and AAA pitching prospects as it sounds like there aren't any to move up next year.
Never fear; there are actually quite a few. Martin Perez, Neil Ramirez, Robbie Ross, Miguel de Los Santos, Fabio Castillo are the most prominent of the bunch. And you never know who will step up. This time last year, Mark Hamburger was an internet joke.
And now for the bad news. This from Jamey Newberg for those yet to hear:
According to the Rangers, based on MRI results the club expects outfielder Nelson Cruz to miss approximately three weeks due to the Grade 1 left hamstring strain he sustained last night. At least one local report notes that AAA Round Rock outfielder Leonys Martin (who is already on the 40-man roster) did not accompany the Express on their team flight to Omaha, nor did righthander Mark Hamburger (who is not presently on the roster).
Why does Joey Butler not get any consideration as a fill in for Cruz? The need is for a RH bat. Why are Leonys Martin (LH) and Lance Berkman (biased to the LH side) getting all the press? I thought Butler looked pretty good in Surprise and he's had a great season at AAA.
@JimP I thought the same thing. He's destroying AAA pitching right now. I have a few theories.
1. He's been underwhelming for most of his career and only this year he's been hitting well in a predominantly hitter friendly park and league. It may be that they see him as more of a AAAA guy like Chris Davis, Jason Botts....
2. He's not on the 40 man so they may be waiting until the 9/1 expanded rosters to bring him up. Leonys has more tools that are conducive to a pinch running, defensive replacement situation. I think they see Murphy as Cruz's replacement.
3. Butler is the best hitter on the Express and JD has said he doesn't want to compromise RR's chances in the playoffs by picking off their best players for the big league club. Leonys wasn't contributing a ton so he's less of an impact move.
I agree on Butler. He was just named a PCL Post Season All-Star. I know the thought is "proven" MLB player that can produce, but the Berkman trade is unlikely. Some moves will be made one way or the other. But I do like Butler.
