What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
Great Series this weekend, starting pitching looked great. Nice b**** slap in the face CJ game to the A's and their stadium, and we gained some games on the Angels. I have to admit that I for one am quite surprised how complete our team looks right now, simply with the addition of 2 relievers. I was a bit skeptical, wanting another starting pitcher, but this really seems to be working. I think the only question that remains is the one posted. Can Washington and the Rangers trust DO during the playoffs (if we make them... I still wont say anything's a certainty until we get atleast 6 games ahead which could happen this week....) I believe during the broadcast Barnett stated that DO had hallowed an inherited runner to score 7/8 of the last games he had gone into. depending on the score this highly unacceptable, and because of him he nearly blew the game today. Granted this time last year he had some rough games and I believe he had a few decent showings in the playoffs early on... but the question still remains. Can you, wash, and the rangers trust him to get his man out with someone in scoring position during the playoffs? Right now it seems like no, and it makes me wonder if this team would be better off with another lefty specialist; granted i dont know who.... sorry, i just hate watching close games become closer or us behind due to BP incompetance.
Who is the alternative? I'm rarely excited to see him come out of the bullpen, but I haven't lost my confidence in his composure or stuff. Unfortunately their doesn't really exist another qualified lefty to hand the ball to.
We did look great this weekend but that is a big question goin foward. After DO let the run score to tie it i thought, who do we have to replace him? Answer we dont maybe kirkman anybody have his line against leftys?
thats the problem. makes me wonder if maybe theres some one we can pick up off waivers. If we're talking playoffs its possible holland will be left out of the rotation... otherwise he might be all we've got
DO does bring the suck he can't get outs with men on. He is ok with clean pads but so is Kirkman.
Ogando sucked with men on last year as well.
i have more faith that DO can nut up for a batter or two than needed than trust kirkman right now. he's been absolutely brutal all year. He started looking good in AAA for a good 3 weeks, but then started sucking there too. Damn shame cuz he was really good last year... sophomore slump ala feliz? or was he just a one hit wonder....
i couldnt remember if scheppers was a lefty or not disappointed me to see he was a righty. i do think we'll see him in call ups.
but i dunno guys i'm feeling that the arthur rhodes signing mightve shot us in the foot a little. there were several other lefty specialists out there and they had to choose old man gives up the lead.
I have more trust in Sam Kinison ex wife........ tired of oliver, I always have a bad feeling when he comes in a game....than he makes a couple of good pitches and I worship his sorry ...than all of a sudden he looks like that great old pitcher with experience....with the talent we have in the bullpen, I don't want to "trust" oliver....(...but I do realise that he can be usefull in certain situations, and that is where wash does a great job..)
As compared to, who? Clearly he is behind the four righties. But, four won't get you through October. It will get you through most of the high leverage situations, but not all. Is he a better option than Kirkman, O'Day, Rapada, or whoever else? I think so.
I don't get it, DCAg. Oliver isn't perfect, but he's been okay, as long as he hasn't had to close or be the primary setup guy. And now that we have Adams, Koji, and Lowe - he doesn't ever have to do that (well, maybe not "never" but it should be a rare occurrence).
I think that Oliver as a lefty-only guy is perfectly fine. When the rosters expand, I fully expect them to add a few pieces. One of them will definitely be another lefty to come out of the bullpen against lefties for the last month of the season.
Ditto what WWJD? said...
The better question is (as usual) can RW/MM's bullpen managment be trusted come playoff time? I mean why the %$#& did they bring DO in at that point, with two righties coming up, when Yoshi was already warm in the pen?!?!
Maddux/Wash's bullpen managment is just pyschotic/idiotic at times...
theres nothing to get really. there will be a situation that occurs during the playoffs (most likely calling upon a lefty specialist) and DO is the ONLY option. from what he's shown us the last few weeks i'm afraid he doesnt get the job done. end of story. we have one left on the roster to call up and thats kirkman. and thats not an upgrade. the only situation i can really see is if Holland doesnt make the playoff rotation. Unfortunately Ogando hasnt looked the best and i think Holland has the edge on that last spot. its gonna be a battle to the end for those two, but i'd hate for a better holland to be forced in the bullpen just to save our asses in a situation such as this because DO has perpetually failed to do his job. again i have to reiterate Barnett himself said it, 7 out of the last 8 times DO has been called on to end an inning. His in herited runners has scored. Count yetesterday, we're talking 8/9. i dont like those odds. but like i said, i think he had a slump similar to this earlier last year, and was able to get the job done. so i know i, and it appears a few others, are at a loss on what to do do when the time comes in this situation. in wash we trust i guess.
1) Holland will likely be in the pen come playoff time.
2) Hopefully, Wash has the good sense to relegate everyone not named Uehara, Adams, and Feliz to glorified mopup duty come playoff time.
3) Do you really think Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, or Tigers fans feel just great about the #4 man in the bullpen? I mean, jus what standard are you comparing him to?
It's a good point that Scooby makes. Stop looking over there at Phily or SF as the "normal" for rotation quality. The other teams have major problems, all of them, when you get past #1 or #2. Texas has as good a shot as anyone in the AL to get to the world series, if they can somehow beat down the Angels.
