What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
Evan Grant tweeting that he hears it's Mike Adams instead of Heath Bell that the Rangers have acquired.
Please don't get me excited only for this to turn out to be false.
Having Adams closing and Uehara setting him up next year would be awesome, not to mention make our bullpen much better for this year.
I am hearing TEX gave up Erlin and Weiland, still waiting on something a little more "official".
It appears to be Mike Adams for Erlin and Wieland according to multiple sources.
TR Sullivan now reporting also it was Erlin and Weiland that TEX is sending to SD. High price to pay, but Adams is under team control through next season also.
If that's true it's a steal for the pads
It could be, you never know. Neither one of those guys may ever do much, it's a risk teams take all the time. We do know that Adams will help the Rangers this season and at least next season.
I love it. Adams is a K per inning guy with closer ability, 1.15 era and under control next year. We now have a strong bullpen for the playoffs AND they are both here for 2012.
You've got to give to get. Considering we got a chance to make a real run this season and we have both pieces for next year . . . the price seems fine to me.
That's a lot to give up, but I'll take it.
We are extremely deep in pitching prospects and we just turned our biggest weakness into a huge strength. Assuming that our SP can hold up for the rest of the season and CF can continue to be our only true weakness on offense (if you can call it that with the way Chavez and Gentry have played), I think we are a team to be feared come playoff time.
With the lack of a true TORP available and LM sitting in AAA, I like what JD has done this deadline. Now lets acquire a RH hitter through waivers and make another run!
The dbacks get brad Ziegler for Brandon Allen and a c prospect and the braves got Bourne for shaffer their 9th 26th and 27th prospect Hopefully when Adams leaves the Rangers get two draft picks
@RDK: Who should we target for the RH hitter?
@RDK Im kinda glad to know that Im not the only one who thinks maybe Endy Chavez isn't getting lucky for every game the streak of 40 some games he's been on. Maybe the kid can actually play some.
The Rangers just went from having one of the worst bpens to one of the best (the best?). No more blowing leads after the 7th! Absent a major injury, this should finish off the Angels. Imagine what the playoff bpen will look like with Holland/Harrison (assuming OGando holds up).
My question to the group: how much difference does a great bpen make in the playoffs? It's less than acquiring an ace, but do we think this will make a big difference in Oct.?
@Andy: I have no idea who might be available later on. Maybe there isn't anyone. I just know that, unless Naps is sitting on the bench, there is not a single right handed hitter on our bench that I trust to pinch hit in the playoffs.
Maybe I'm over-analyzing our team, but I definitely wouldn't mind a decent RH hitter on our bench.
@AVance: I both like and appreciate what Chavez has done for us so far this year. I do, however, worry that he is eventually going to fall. Hopefully it will be next year when LM is ready, and not this year during the playoff push or playoffs.
In the playoffs, teams typically move their 5th starter to the 'pen, drop one guy from the bullpen from the playoff roster, and add a position player. That might mean Holland to the bullpen (I'm assuming Rhodes gets DFA'd and Holland becomes the 2nd lefty for the playoffs), Feldman off the playoff roster, and 1 additional position player. Often, this additional pp is either a pinch run specialis or a plus defender for late innings. German would be an example of this type of player. However, with Chavez and Gentry on the roster and one on the bench every night, a pr type seems unneccesary.
Which brings me to Chad Tracy. Not a major prospect, looks like a defensive liability no matter where he plays, but all he's ever done is hit at every level, including AAA this year. He's already on the 40, which means he's playoff eligible. And he's a RH bat.
Perhaps he gets the Sept 1 callup, and if he hits well down the stretch, he's the extra position player and primary RH PH on the bench for the playoffs? What sayest you guys?
I agree with everything scooby just said
