Rangers To Acquire Koji Uehara For Davis, HunterFrom MLB TradeRumors
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 30 at 4:21pm CST]
After weeks of searching, GM Jon Daniels has acquired some help for his bullpen. The Rangers will acquire Koji Uehara from the Orioles for Chris Davis and Tommy Hunter, according to Dan Connolly and Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun (all Twitter links).
Uehara, 36, has a 1.72 ERA with 11.9 K/9 and 1.5 BB/9 in 47 innings this year. He earns $3MM and has a $4MM option for '12 that vests with another 13 appearances. He'll be a welcome addition to the back of manager Ron Washington's bullpen.
The move hasn't yet been approved because of the money changing hands, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com
You guys like this deal? Do you think we gave up too much? Anyone else surprised that Hunter was dealt?
I don't know. I wish we didn't give up Hunter. Orioles probably see him as a starter, but he was not going to start for the Rangers. Holland/Harrison have taken his spot, so in the long run I'm okay with it.
surprised yes dident think hunter would be delt he has been pitching well for us out of the pen but i dont think he would have been a starter again in texas so now we call up who to replace cd at third?
Completely fine with it. Hunter seems like he's constantly battling injuries and has been passed by others in the rotation and the next wave of younger pitchers are coming soon.
Davis just never was going to make it here it appeared. I hope the change of scenery does him good, he seems like a good guy.
Rumors were that Texas was gonna make a "big splash" - and now they have an extra roster spot open. What's gonna happen? Can't imagine that JD is done.
Agree WWJDD. This seems like just an appetizer. Crazy to think we just traded a pitcher in Hunter who started in the playoffs last year, but I agree with everyone else that he won't fit in rotation here. Uehara was second on my reliever list only to Clippard. Great move and will only cost $4M next year.
Seems like a win all around, I think. Hunter has the potential to be a rotation man, we just don't have a spot for him there right now. Same with Davis, I expect he'll do well also, we just have people playing all his positions right now. Koji could be a good fit for us now; do you think we'd use him as closer or setup man?
I suppose I am fine with it, although I think Hunter will have a decent MLB career as a starter. Davis was kind of a ad fit for this time and I'm pretty happy we moved him before we lost him as a minor league FA.
The second piece of the Empire is in place!! Now add Kuroda and prepare for world domination!!!
JD turned two expendable, back of the roster players into a needed piece through 2012. Hunter is a 4-5, innings eating rotation piece but we have plenty of those developing in the minors. And Davis could finally figure it out, but his K/BB ratio is out of control and Texas would have to make a decision on him next spring anyway. Plus, they're going to need the roster spaces before too long.
This is a slam dunk, IMO.
Love it. I'm glad both players get the chance to be ML starters on a regular basis. I'm also glad Hunter won't have to sweat so much when he pitches.
I hope were not done this doesn't make anyone more afraid of the rangers. And do we have to tolerate MY defensively for two our three weeks. Ugh...
I don't understand why u give up Hunter for another reliever and Chris Davis. I would understand CD but not both too much
Eddie, only 2...Balt sending 2 mil in the trade as well. I also believe this may be the start of some fun trades. 1 open roster spot now, hmmmm.
Roster spot goes to Darren O'Day?
As a bonus, we traded for a player that Angels desperately wanted beside Aramis Ramirez. It feels like Baltimore pushed JD to include Hunter as a late addition to the trade once they threaten to complete the trade with the Angels.
I think this deal is good. It helps in an area the Rangers really need improvement in without giving up too much in regard to prospects. Also, I don't think Hunter has really done that well. He's kept his ERA down but he's given up quite a few runs that have been charged to other pitchers.
The Rangers continue talking to the Padres about Bell, even after acquiring Koji Uehara, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports
The trade is win-win. Now let's add Mike Adams.
Love this deal!
I'm thinking THAT is the splash - getting both Koji and Bell, the two best relievers available.
Just read that Kuroda is using his no-trade clause to finish the season in LA. So if they are making a "splash" - it's not going to be an all-Japanese haul.
Supposedly TX is still talking to SD about Bell, but you have to think that SD just lost a lot of leverage now that TX already has Koji. I bet Bell goes to St. Louis.
What I would like to see is (1) an upgrade on LOOG so that Rhodes can be launched into the sun, and (2) an OF such as Byrd to stabilize things out there, since Cruz is hurt again.
This is a no brainer trade. 1. CD had to go somewhere this year no matter what. 2. You're talking about 2 marginal players who were already passed in talent.3. We kept every single one of our prospects.
All of our current pitchers have the ability to be a #1-3 starter. Does anyone realistically see that out of Hunter? No. Plus, his fat ass is always injured. Words of wisdom to Hunter: You're a MLB pitcher. Start training like one. I feel like we won this in a landslide. JD proves once again he's one of the best.
Keep the faith.
