So you're right, last year at this time the Rangers were definitely in a better position and playing better too.
Oh and I also forgot to add that last year they were also on the verge of trading for Cliff Lee!This year, they are on the verge of trading for Heath Bell!?!?!? (I REALLY hope JD gets someone else and that this is just a smoke screen)
1. The Angels won't keep up the pace that they're on.2. Cliff Lee really helped us out during the regular season last year. Cough.
I think the points are valid:
Rangers are playing about as well as last year but won't be adding a Cliff Lee to the stable.
However, Lee really didn't help that much in regular season (4-6, 3.98 ERA, 15 starts, 108 innings).
I don't think this year's version has been as consistent and certainly has not played as well fundamentally. Shore up the defense, get Beltre back to improve against lefties and I think we'll do better.
1. The Angels won't keep up the pace that they're on.I've been seeing statements like this a lot on this site for some time now and yet, the Angels are in fact keeping up the pace. Considering that real life circumstances, so far, contradict this and there is no convincing arguments to support this notion I'm not all that inclined to agree with it.
2. Cliff Lee really helped us out during the regular season last year. Cough. The implication of your sarcasm is true however, he did help immensely in the playoffs (and even a little in the regular season once his back problem was resolved), and I'm not one of those fans who is content with just getting to the playoffs.
In any case, I really do hope that the Rangers make the playoffs but as badly as I want them to make and do well in the playoffs I'd rather them not make the playoffs if the only means of assuring that is to give up too much for a trade.
And they're where they are despite having lost their best player for the season Kendry Morales. How much better would they be with him in the lineup adding to that sad offense?
The Angels have won 28 of their last 41 games, which is just under .700. If they keep up that pace, they'll be at 97 wins when it's all said and done. If you can honestly say that you believe that Los Angeles will win 97 games this season then I'll just stop the debate there and revisit this when the last pitch is thrown for the season.
the angels' offense wouldn't improve with the return of morales. mark trumbo is better.
"Trumbo > Morales"? Oh...my...god...
"The angels offense wouldn't improve"? What if they put Trumbo at DH and Morales at 1B? Doesn't that beat Abreu at DH and Trumbo at 1B?
Morales > Trumbo no matter how you spin it.
Well, if you want to call it a debate the I guess it's my turn for a rebuttal. I could also pull a random sample size out of my arse and try to use it to prove a point or I could just point out the fallacies of your last point. The last 41 games are sort of irrelevant in this context wouldn't you say? We're talking about the last 106 games (i.e. all of them). The Rangers are very streaky too. But more importantly, the Angels very likely won't have to win 97 games to win the division.
So if you use their current pace as an example it's ok, but I can't?

I don't get how you take "current" pace out of that statement. The "for some time now" was meant to imply the time frame that people have been such statements (i.e. posting the Angels will fall by the wayside) which started all the way back around the end of May but has yet to happen.
