What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
Why on earth does this guy get so much playing time? Washington said yesterday he did not start Moreland at first base so he could get Napoli's HOT bat in the lineup. Well, with Harrison on the mound tonight, why the hell was Napoli not catching him? Harrison has always been excellent with Napoli, not to mention the entire staff.
Every time I see Torrealba now, I can't help to ask "What the heck is he doing on this team?" I know this has been a frequent forum topic, but I felt compelled to post it. Any more thoughts on Torrealba?
Yep, IMO he's not as good as Napoli behind the plate especially for our young pitchers, i.e. Holland and Harrison. Seems like a good clubhouse guy, though...
The one thing that Naps cannot match is Yorvit's energy in the dugout and on the field. He is always intense and is always showing emotion when the pitcher gets a big strikeout. He also threw out some attempting basestealers tonight with a couple of nice throws. I do think he is slightly better than Naps behind the plate, but there is not doubt that Naps is the superior offense force and I think they should be getting playing time split 50/50 at least.
Tor is a defensive minded catcher playing for a defensive minded coach... Napoli hasn't been known in the past for being that great defensively, although he has played well thus far. Anyway, I like him behind the plate. Besides, you don't need Napoli in the lineup when you already have firepower up and down it without him.
I think Torrealba has more pass balls. Nothing to base that on but watching games. I think it should be 50/50 split.
I think 50/50 is reasonable based on their play so far. You can't have a catcher catch 4 out of every 5 games in Texas. A split keeps them fresh, and Napoli can also get time at 1B against lefties, such as he did Friday night.
Torrealba hasn't been as good offensively or defensively as I, and probably many others, had hoped, especially in the OBP and SLG categories, but he's not terrible for a catcher. It could be worse, we could have Jeff Mathis as our starting catcher.
Given his .936 OPS, it's pretty tough to understand why Napoli's not in every game, except cases where he needs some rest. If the goal is to field the best team, Napoli should catch when a right hander is pitching. His OPS against righties is .809. Torrealba's is .646. When a lefty is pitching, he should play 1B. His OPS against lefties is 1.143. Moreland's is .466.
Maybe RW isn't playing him more because he wants to keep him fresh, but given how tight the race is, it seems he should be in there more. If Young gets playing time at third (ugh!), maybe Napoli will get some ABs as DH.
Really starting to think all of our pitchers just look more comfortable throwing to Napoli for some reason. Not sure what it is. Their tempo is better, I think Nap gives them a better target, he hits better, doesn't let balls get behind him and a host of other things. Or, maybe I'm just seeing things.
