Forum > Trade Torrealba For Relief Pitching?

This thought crossed my mind and I realize it would be risky but Napoli has been good behind the plate this year. How much better is Torrealba, Napoli, and Teagarden than Napoli, Teagarden, Cash?

Further, would such a trade (perhaps to San Fran) allow us to dodge the bullet of having to give up more talent since they are so desperate for a catcher after the Posey accident.

Also, I'm not sure what we are looking to do in the bullpen, but this might allow us to add two pieces at a lower cost rather than one at a high cost (not that Torrealba would fetch us two pitchers).

I feel like this is probably a bad idea seeing as how it would lead to a downgrade in defense behind the plate but hear me out. This is my contribution to outside the box thinking for the day. And yes I know certain things are inside the box for a reason but maybe this one is sort of on the borderline if you consider the following.

Look at Teagarden, my understanding is he is supposed to be great defensively. If Napoli and Teagarden split the games you are getting Teagarden a lot more which does something to make up for the defensive void opened by a Torrealba departure. As far as Napoli taking half the games he is already taking about one third of them so I don't see that as awful considering how he has performed better than expected defensively of late. Furthermore, we have seen how Torrealba wears down if he has to take more than half the games so Napoli taking half might be in the cards already down the stretch. And any offensive downgrade from placing Teagarden in there would likely be offset by getting Napoli more consistent at bats and who know maybe Taylor finds it in the bigs after his romping at Round Rock. I think with more consistent playing time Napoli would hit better, especially against lefties. I also think that seeing righties regularly is probably a big reason he was able to pound lefties because the contrast helps him see the ball and focus on it better.

So, maybe this rant isn't even worthy of a response because its such a bad idea but I thought I would throw it out anyways.

I guess an alternative would be to trade Taylor but maybe Yorvit fetches you a late inning pitcher straight up while you would need to send a prospect or two with Teagarden to get the same result. Plus, who knows if Teagarden might translate his recent offensive success at AAA to the bigs?

Or is Diaz ahead of Cash on the depth chart? He's hitting like .360 at Round Rock but I don't know what he is like behind the plate. Cash is hitting .206 but I imagine he is better defensively.

Diaz's stats:

MaxRam was signed yesterday by the Giants to a minor league deal for insurance, I'm assuming. I thought Cash was gone but I'll to look that up to know for sure.
I don't like this idea personally because I'm of the opinion with the Rangers, anyway, depth in that position is optimum.
I think we should buy Treanor back from KC.....and figure something out internally for the BP. I'm leery of paying/trading big for a Reliever.

I like the idea of buying Treanor back. He's got about a .650 OPS at Kansas City and we know he's good defensively.

How about trading Torrealba for a relief pitcher, buying Treanor back (Kansas City is more than 10 games under .500) and sending Teagarden down? Alternatively, you could keep a third catcher and send Gentry or Chavez down. Or you could trade Murphy, take a third catcher, and Moreland could be your 4th OFielder. Or you could trade Murphy and call up Davis with two catchers (but that's a different topic and I'm not sure you'd get anything for him while he is struggling like he is, he just looks like he has psyched himself out big time).

I would do this if there was a market for Yorvit. I'm not really sure there is, though.

I've heard the Giants are desperate for a catcher. Yorvit is a pretty decent catcher who would probably hit better in the NL.

Going into the off season, the team stated that signing Treanor was a priority. Unfortunately, Treanor was dealt to keep an extra arm in the bullpen. I believe that JD really screwed the catching situation up this off season.

KC needs Treanor until Kendall is ready, and who knows when that will be? They don't have another catcher in the minors who could take a major league job now.

This may be a dumb question, but can Treanor, Napoli, or Teagarden speak Spanish? Or are Ogando and Feliz able to manage well enough with English-only catchers?

Maybe this wasn't such a horrible idea. Rumor has it that it is being discussed between San Fran and the Rangers.

Part of me says do it if you can get a relatively cheap AND GOOD bullpen arm. Another part says don't give up Torrealba, less because I'm worried about losing his bat and his glove and more because I'm worried about the impact on the clubhouse as well as the catching situation in general for the rest of this year and next.
