Forum > Chris Davis played left field on Sunday
i cannot believe they have not moved davis already..very difficult to believe he is still in this orgainization..that tells you the word is out and chris davis is one of those AAAA players...too good for the minors, not good enuf to impact the majors. very few secrets in sports anymore. i would'nt trade murphy, i'd more likely try to move borbon..murphy is too valueable as a dependable 4th outfielder, and he is due to get hot very soon at the plate.

CD makes me think of Nelson Cruz 2.0. If Davis can play D anywhere close to Murph give him a shot and see what he can do. Its not like Murphys bat is screaming keep me around.

Chris is 25 and David is 29. Bill James is projecting Chris to have an OPS over 800 and David to be around 750. Also, on some of the rumor blogs David's name has been thrown around some. It would not shock me if they traded David before Chris. Some of the potential teams SanDiego & New York Mets don't have a need for 1b or 3b if the Rangers are looking at Bell & K-Rod. I don't know part of me wants to keep both and see what the minors can provide IE: is Tanner Scheppers healthy and can he be that setup guy? The other part of me screams go get somebody and stop fooling around! This division is definetly winnable but realistically how far can we go in the playoffs without a major upgrade to the bullpen?

Davis could be a super sub for us next year especially if MY decides to leave to play the field somewhere. He could play all of the corners, be our 4th outfielder (because Josh would backup center) and corner infield backup which would create roster flexibility. I'm not sure about his speed but I have no doubt he can develop the instincts to run down some fly balls based on what he does at 1st and 3rd.
With Davis around you wouldn't need a corner infield utility or a 4th outfielder because you have Moreland as your 5th OF and Josh to back up CF. That frees up a roster space for flexibility and potentially even one more if you went with a cycle through idea at DH and keeping Blanco as your infield utility is great because you have plenty of backup at 1st and Andres can play the other three infield positions so you never have to kill your DH.

Any reports on how he did out there?

He hit 2 bombs. I would rather keep Davis than Murphy. I think we know what Murph's ceiling is: servicable 4th outfielder. Not particularly good at anything, basically a replacement player. Davis at least has the potential to be better than average because he has more power than Murphy and is an above average defensive 1st baseman.

calm down calm down..o'day may be back in around a week and hunter and feldman are close..scheppers could be used down the line..time to release rhodes..it was a good gamble but he has hit the wall..oliver is still tennable, but do you trust him as your ONLY LHP in short relief?..perhaps it is close to time for holland to fill that role, and put hunter back as your 5th starter when he is well. i persoanlly think we have amswers to most of our problems right here in front of us without making major deals..but rhodes has got to go. what use is he?

Murphy's bat has been limp for a LONG TIME now, and he's just too damn slow in the Outfield. He can make the easy outfield plays (most guys can do that) and he gives it 100% which I like, but it's reached the point where he's a liabiliy and we can't afford to have him out there stinking it up in the hope that his bat comes alive. Even then, his defense will still be subpar on balls in the gap and down the line. Murphy's occassional "great play" is usually a plays that guys with good speed can make easily.
I don't have any doubt CD can learn the OF quickly. He's one of the best 1Bs I've ever seen, he's more than adequate for 3B, and he can run for his size. He doesn't have to be Tori Hunter or Jom Edmonds out there. With his athleticism, he can "play deep", i.e. conservatively, and use his speed to just make sure he gets the gappers on the bounce and throw it to the cut off man, which is way preferable to having super slow Murphy chasing balls to the wall.

Holland needs to stay in the rotation for the entire year!
I don't agree that Davis would make a better fourth outfielder than Murphy. Statistically speaking Murphy is an average COF based on range alone. I don't see why you all think Davis would have superior range compared to Murphy. Yes he runs well for a big guy but it's not like he's even as fast as Cruz is. And if you want someone to play deeper in the field why not just tell that to Murphy.
Offensively Davis projects significantly higher than Murphy and for the year he is hitting closer to his 2008 season than at any other point in his career since. In fact I think he may be in the mist of turning the corner on being a AAAA player and nearly ready to burst back into the Show.
That being said I still don't believe he would fit in our outfield. Murphy looks bad in center and left because we have one of the largest left center gaps in the majors. Davis would have the same issue. Really the best in house solution for the COF is to place Hamilton in left and a have a much faster guy like Gentry or Borbon in center. Then when Hamilton needs a day off you move Cruz to left and put Murphy in right like it was planned all along. Has anyone heard how Borbon is doing lately by the way?

I think Davis has played several games out there of late, and was working at it with Gary Pettis a while back. I've got absolutely no faith in CD ever mashing when it matters, but he could have been useful out there when ham and Cruz were both on the DL. And it can't hurt his trade value.

Davis has improved his Poker Chip value this year... he's now better trade bait
Um, how's Borbon's stick doing, down on the farm? Yes. I know don't say it.

Just saw the box score for Round Rock's Sunday game and Chris Davis played left field. I am wondering if this means the big club might be leaning toward trading David Murphy instead of Chris for some pitching help? Who has more value Davis or Murphy?
