What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
Looks like Scott Kazmir and the Angels have finally run their course. The guy has been terrible for a few years now, but he's still young and left handed. Would he be worth a shot for the Rangers? Maybe coming back to his Texas roots might turn him around?
I would try to sign him and let Mike Maddux take a shot at him. Kazmir is only 27 year old and I don't think we have to cover any of his $14.5 million.
I'm glad someone posted this, because I was thinking about it as well. I actually really like the idea of moving him to the bullpen. He's a smaller guy, injury prone, and he pitches off his fastball, so me makes a lot more sense in the bullpen.
He won't be easy to get, I'm sure, as every team in baseball is salivating over the idea of a reclamation project, and he might be more inclined to go to Houston, where he's from and where the need is greater. On the flip side, he might like the idea of working with Mike Maddux over Doug Brocail.
I have a feeling that someone is going to overpay for Kazmir. We don't need another Brandon Webb.
(That is all.)
I disagree - that is not all, as I believe the following should be added to your statement:
HELL THE %$@! NO!
To the people saying no, are you saying you wouldn't even sign Kazmir to a minor league deal? That seems ridiculous considering the upside there.
Also, maybe we should have signed Cory Wade, considering the Yanks just plucked him off the street and he threw 3 scoreless, hitless innings against us in this series.
We should grab Kazmir..... along with Dontrelle Willis, and Carlos Silva :)
I think the general consensus among many baseball experts (granted they could totally be wrong, it happens all the time) is that much like Willis, Kazmir has just lost it from a mental standpoint and will most likely never be the Scott Kazmir of old. Granted Willis is still on a AAA team somewhere trying to get it back together theres no saying Kazmir wont do the same. However it wont be in Round Rock.
I don't see why a minor league deal is unacceptable for some of you, no harm done if he never gets it together and if can get close to what he was, maybe he is a decent #4 or #5 down the road.
I would also like to go pick up JC Romero, who the Phils just DFA. we could stick him in the pen right away in place of kirkman.
Would we have to put Kazmir on the 40-man if we signed him?
If it's the Kazmir of 2006, then okay. If it's the Kazmir of 2009 and forward - uh no. You might as well sign Dontrelle Willis and Jeremy Bonderman. It's redundant - if we want to get a guy who can give you a 6 era with a WHIP of 1.5, we already have Tomko who can do that.
We don't HAVE to deal with or sign gimps & mediocrity. So why push the point? Do you want to roll in this pile of dung even longer? We've just gone 3-8... swept bythe Yankees and almost shut out by an aging AAA arm. This Ranger reality dead ball sucks and so does Kasmir.Find some frick'n players with Big Nadz that love to PLAY.
I love your enthusiasm. you just wont quit. youre like the JKidd of these forums. so full of positivity and energy.... you just wont let us give up or settle for anything less than the best from this team.
You have to deal with my Old Ass. Well, I have to deal withmy baseball playing days Grand Dad, that keeps smackingme with his Louisville Slugger Cane. He lives for baseball. He raised me on Mud Rub and diapered me with pine tar rags.I'm just reminding myself, what Daniels/Ryan & Co promisedthe Ranger Fans. AL Champs... focus to make the team better.Repeat in ALCS... best move forward... It's World Series in 2011.
lol. seriously though. i was being sincere. its good to have someone thats not as down trodden as the rest of us are right now. the team might be in first place barely right now. so sometimes when you feel like just going absolutely going off about this team. one of your posts will tend to calm me down get me pumped up and get my perspective back. DFW has fickle fans, we always have been. i blame the boys. too may let downs. We're one season removed from the ALCS and could return, but right now its just so hard to believe that. Thanks for keepin the faith and at times spreading it around when needed
To those of you questioning why some of us oppose a sigining such as this:
I would especially like to highlight the following:
"Not only did Kazmir lose considerable velocity on his fastball, which used to hit 94 mph, he lost command of all of his pitches. In one start, he threw three pitches behind the backs of right-handed hitters."
I know the guy is still young, but for all intents and purposes he appears to be a total flame-out at this point. Hell, Hank Blalock is still only 30 years old! Maybe we should sign him to a minor league deal too!
The point is, there is a time and a place to pursue reclamation projects. This does not appear to be that time or place.
Also, one other item to consider regarding the many names thown out above (Bonderman, Silva, Willis, etc.). Each reclamation project obviously requires a spot on one of the team's farm system rosters. This involves an opportunity cost that may come at the expense of the development of another prospect (perhaps one that has a more legitamite chance to contribute at the ML level in the future).
I think that when you take fliers, it is likely wiser to shoot for more of a Brandon Webb type situation than the Kazmir one (i.e. recent Cy Young winner with recent injury issues that has not pitched in MLB for a while instead of guy who has lost all semblance of command/control for no apparent physical reason). The risk/reward and/or opportunity cost components just don't seem to justify a signing of this nature.
Kazmir has lost a whopping 4-mph off his fastball from last year. That's a sign of massive mechanical and conditioning problems. Still, I'd rather have him on the AAA-roster than someone who's totally clueless AND who has zero MLB experience like Aguero.
Rather have Bonderman!
would hate to give up the spots of seth Mclung and hankins to try to rehab a former all star. If Kazmir was what he used to be we couldn't touch him for the price. Now that he is down you get to take a shot at him and sign him to a make good contract.
Bravo Hubz and Caleb.STOP with these recondition projects. Spend money smartly and develop in the Farm.
