Forum > A Place for Davis?
Davis could also serve as a super sub in this scenario as he would be able to play left, DH, and 1st and 3rd.
That would give you roster flexibility because you wouldn't need a corner utility player on the roster, similar to what Young is providing now and Davis would play a better hot corner than Young while Blanco would back up SS as he has been this year.

I like the notion of Davis as super-sub. At the same time, while there is a chance he will figure it all out an thrive for years at the big league level, there is an even greater chance that he never figures it all out and spares people to death for parts of 3 more seasons, washes out, and is never heard from again. Given that, for the right package, he has to be considered trade bait. It all comes down to where the club is at the deadline, what the price is for that bullpen piece or starting rotation depth, how good that bullpen piece is, and how long the control is of that pitcher. For example, if Huston Street became available in a cost cuting move, I'd be very interested in something like Street for Davis/Weiland. Part of the reason is that a Street/Feliz combo could be a major part of a post-season run for the Rangers. But the other part is that having a guy like Street under contract for 2012 would make it much easier to slot Feliz into CJ's rotation spot when he leaves, and paying Street $7.5m is a lot more palatable than paying CJ $20m to keep him and keep Feliz in the bullpen. Street also has a mutual option fo 2013 and would likely yield Type A compensation if you lose him to FA thereafter.

i'm an 80s connosuier so dont hate... but they should play micheal w smith's Place in this World everytime he goes up to bat.....

Davis' long term place is on the bench. I'd like to see him get some time in left just to increase his trade value. As a utility/bench player with some pop he can be of some use.

I don't think you get an excellent bullpen arm for Davis because of his 4A status at the plate.
That is why I would MUCH RATHER keep him and hope he puts it together because to me that is the smarter call than taking a replaceable bullpen arm or 5th starter type pitching depth in return for a guy who just might be everything in a couple of years.
Davis' 4A status puts him in a uniquely protected position to stay on the Rangers, or at least I think IT SHOULD.
Why? Because he isn't good enough yet to get us an excellent bullpen arm, and because if you can't get good value for him it is better to keep him and wait for him to put it together because if that pays off it pays off potentially bigger than most imagine right now.
Can anyone answer my questions about Davis' speed? Considering his instincts at 1st and 3rd I have no doubt he could get good reads on flies to the outfield, but I don't know for example, how much faster than a Mitch Moreland type (a guys who is a liability in the outfield because of his speed) outfielder he is.
Joe
So full of hope and assume and what ifs.
If Davis figures out how to be the hitter he should, he would be great to have anywhere. If my aunt had nuts she'd be my uncle.

Chris Davis has had too many chances to prove he can handle MLB at bats. He's at the point now that as far as the Texas Rangers go, he will only be useful if David Murphy gets traded. Then we might need Davis's "bat" on the bench. thats pretty much the only way i see it going for him. It really sucks cuz to put it in perspective, his first year brought the same excitement, optimism and hope that Ogando is bringing right now.

.269/.333/.481 with 3 HRs and 5 walks in 57 PAs is hardly shit. I just wish he could see more time at the plate, there is just not an everyday place for him right now.

Davis is obviously looking more comfortable, even relaxed,
but really, Davis in centerfield?
"Hey TAG, pass those nut bars".

Maybe he can pitch and hit ninth when we move to the National League? We know he has a good arm. Any takers?
Joe
that was a typo by the way, I meant Davis (LF or DH)
Joe
I wondered about that Joe... CD n' CF?
I'm thinking Davis is not long for ANY Ranger Express Roster.
He looks to be a pivotal piece, in a near future TORP acquisition.
I think he's finally ready for MLB, but not as a Ranger, but Davis
has maintained a certain amount of Ranger sticky, so I'd not be
surprised he was chosen over another~ not Mitch, Mike or Leonys

Hey aggie-what is a connosuier?
Dave
Evidently Davis played left field the other day.

What if Michael Young and the Rangers part ways in a trade during the next off season as Jamey Newberg predicted? I'm not saying I necessarily want that to happen, but there might be a likelihood there if Young decides he wants to continue to play in the field after this season.
How fast is Chris Davis? And can he get a quick read on balls hit to the outfield? For him to be able to play left he would have to probably be faster than Moreland who is probably a defensive liability in either corner outfield position.
Maybe if Young goes elsewhere Davis and Hamilton could trade DH and left field assignments.
The other road block there is David Murphy. I believe we have him for one more year after 2010. I love Murphy and would hate to see him go but he has been mentioned in trade talks as well. And if Murphy stays might there be room for Davis as a 4th outfielder with Josh backing up Center? That way you get his bat (assuming he is eventually able to adjust to big league pitching) on the team and in any instance of injury.
Chavez (CF)
Kinsler (2B)
Hamilton (DH or LF)
Cruz (RF)
Beltre (3B)
Moreland (1B)
Torrealba or Napoli (C)
Davis (LF or CF)
Andrus (SS)
I understand why people are saying Davis is trade bait, but I don't think we are going to get good value for him because he is still unproved in the bigs. If we can keep him we need to because he really could turn out to be a guy who hits .270 for you and gives you 40 HR's and 30 doubles. I don't want to trade him for a closer or almost any bullpen peace right now just to shore up our run this year. He is worth much more than that. He could easily be an elite hitter in a couple of years.
