Forum > 2011 draft

I'm not in the game/draft chat and I didn't see the picks on mlbtv so I don't know what those guys said about the draft, so this is basically based on the 2 clubhouse posts, but I'm extremely dissapointed in this rangers draft and philosophy. Another sub 6' lefty? Really? in this stacked ass draft take a small lefty that works in the mid-high 80s and touches low 90s and projects as a reliever. And their other pick, a sub .300 hitter in college who is a good athlete. After the draft they had last year, the money they have this year and their horizon (on the cusp of a run over the next few years that rangers fans aren't used to), they should have drafted some players that slipped and pay above the slot to reload the system after all the trades last year. I was thinking maybe even that they shouldn't have signed delgan last year to get that pick back this year when they have more money and is a stacked draft, but I am extremely dissapointed in their first two picks. Speaking of delgan, how is he progressing? Bbref has him hitting under 200 at A ball, but I found some weird rookie league site w/ some stats and he was around 300 w/ some hr's, but I had trouble making any real sense of it all. But back to this draft. Uninspiring.

*Deglan

What are others thoughts on this draft by the rangers and their philosophy? It seems since these players aren't ranked very high, that they'd be going for guys that'll be easy to sign, but matthews is committed to uva w/ an enthusiastic twitter handle, so I don't know what his signability's like. Skole was committed to uga and signed quickly/easily. Does a lead scout have a napoleon complex and wants to prove sub 6' are just as dominant as any? I know there are some, lincecum obviously, but I'm sure stats would back up that the majority of mlb pitchers are listed at 6'1 or taller. Are they trying to save money in 1st rd to spend in later rounds? another light hitting outfielder? Yay! I can't wait til we have an OF of skole, martin, borbon, beltre, and now cone. Obviously that is highly unlikely, my point is they seem to be getting the same type of players over and over, and they're kind of niche players

I just found a look ahead at the 2011draft from 2010 and it said cone has as much power potential from anyone in the 2011 draft, so maybe his down year was something mechanical that can be fixed w/ professional instruction. Hopefully they have a good next 2 days and I am wrong about these two picks.

Sorry to joe this thread up, but getting home and reading those 2 clubhouse posts evoked a more emotional response than any game so far this season, because it seems like they almost didn't try
