Forum > The Yankees' ticking payroll bomb...
Before even clicking that link, Joe is an awesome writer...

Really don't understand what Joe's point is here. He starts the article by making it infinitely clear that he believes all GMs overspend and wind up with overpriced players in future years.
As long as the Yankees maintain the immense payroll/revenue advantages they have enjoyed, they will still be in the playoffs virtually every year in the future. A-Rod, Tex, etc will all be overpaid relative to their production, but they will produce more wins than relative to the lower tier overpriced guys littering every other roster.

Yup, as long as they can buy top talent on the marketplace with no cap whatsoever, they don't really need to have a great farm system. And as long as they keep going to the playoffs 4 out of 5 years, it doesn't really matter whether they win it all or not every time. So any predictions of Yankee doom to me are simply wishful thinking.
WWJDD?
The Yankees could probably be fine with a payroll over $300M, at least for a year or two.

The Yankees could probably be fine with a payroll over $300M, at least for a year or two.
After 2010, as the Cliff Lee race was starting, Brian Cashman made it clear they would keep payroll capped at around $210M, where they have been since 2008.
The Yankees may have more room to spend than everyone else... but they have limits as well. And a large percentage of their limit is heading into a serious decline in production.
Another problem for the Yankees: attendance so far this year is down 9%.

They have a cap. Their payroll has not grown in 3 years.
And as long as they keep going to the playoffs 4 out of 5 years, it doesn't really matter whether they win it all or not every time.
It doesn't?

Joe Posnanski breaks it down.
