Forum > Leonys Martin's debut

3-5, 2 2B, RBI, SB (3rd base), and was caught stealing once
Nice to see him come out and not give in to the pressure of trying to impress. Can't wait to get a chance to see him in person.

And he's "shaking off the rust" in Frisco. If that's him shaking off rust, I want to see what he looks like in 2 months!

I was at the Rider game last night. He was very impressive and all should be ready for it.
He was obviously playing with high adrenaline. He's here through the weekend with Corpus
in town. Saturday the game is televised on CH TV21

I told yall from the beginning. we had all the reasons in the world to be happy about this acquisition. He's gonna be a stud. If he stays healthy. Everyone laughed at me when i said he was major league ready. i say if he has 3 or 4 more performances like that we need to move him to Round Rock asap. lets not delay this kid. he's not super young, and he can adapt. the sooner we can progress him to the bigs the better it is for the Rangers.

good things are coming! Viva la Cuba!

May 13, 2011 at 9:43 AM | Unregistered CommenterMartin

lets have something to get positive about. we gotta start the hype machine!!!!! in fact, i once heard he broke up a chuck norris no hitter..... via HR (i know lame... but its friday, i dont wanna be at work)

ummmm Leonys Martin is the only pitcher Stephen Strasburg IBBs everytime....

i got nothing...

attempt FAIL.

point being... quit finding something to be negative about. and lets get excited about something.

May 13, 2011 at 9:54 AM | Unregistered CommenterDcaggie06

Theres lots of things i get excited about, I just dont see why I should be calling him the Cuban Messiah. He will probably become a great player, I think hes in the Denard Spann mold of player I just dont want to be disapointed i guess.

May 13, 2011 at 10:04 AM | Unregistered CommenterMartin

yeah. we kinda did do the same thing with Julio...

Cuban Messiah... i like that. plus if $hit goes down we've got ourselves the Cuban Messiah Crisis...

well played sir, well played

Too bad I cant stop myself from getting so hard about all these pitching prospects we have lol

I'm going to hold my opinion on Leonys Martin, until he's got Texas Red Dirt in his nails experience.
What I would suggest to all or any... go see this kid PLAY in Frisco. He won't be there in AA long.
The cheap tickets vary from a low $10 to TOPS $20 reserved. He's worth the price of admission.
The DP Ball Park is a treasure to see a game also. It's easy in-easy out. You'll also be way ahead
of the 'Talent Scout Curve', because he's only played in International Tourneys. It's a No Brainer.

Everyone laughed at me when i said he was major league ready.

As they should have.

Call it premature, but I'm pretty pumped about having a possible "legit" leadoff hitter here in Arlington for years to come. According to scouting reports, Leonys Martin seems to have a high baseball IQ and good instincts, also very adept working the count and taking pitches, and is very good with the glove in CF. From all descriptions, it seems like J.D. and the F.O. did a great job on bringing this guy to our organization.

The thought of LM only hitting fast balls is not a concern. In Cuba there's wily & crafty Vets
that throw more junk one can imagine. Several pitchers that would be aces at MLB level.
They get good star treatment, have big families and won't ever leave Cuba. He'll adapt fast.
It's the culture shock here, that will be the hard road, even though his GF & Dad are with him.

I think one of the things I am looking forward to being able to include Engel Beltre in deadline deal without feeling bad about it knowing that Martin is already closer to helping the big club anyway. Beltre still has some value left ,even after his development and attitude issues, and is probably a top 10 prospect in most organizations, maybe top 5 for the Brewers (Greinke, Gallardo, or Marcum anyone?) or Astros (how about Wandy or Myers?). This definitely makes Beltre one of our most expendable good prospects.

May 13, 2011 at 5:29 PM | Unregistered CommenterRyan from Waco

If Beltre, Martin, and Borbon reach their potential no balls would fall in that OF.

May 13, 2011 at 5:39 PM | Unregistered CommenterMartin

IF Borbon goes on DL(?). E. Beltre(40man) on 15gm suspension and Endy Chavez (non-40man)
would *have to go on Waivers when Josh or Cruz come back. That leaves Leonys Martin (40man)
to replace Borbon. Am I missing anything?

May 13, 2011 at 11:12 PM | Unregistered CommenterHubZ

They are either going to designate Tucker, Tomko, or Bush, or transfer Webb or Hunter to the 60-day DL. Those are the only ways I see it working. There is absolutely no way Martin gets the call; it would be a really bad move unless he is strictly there as an emergency backup OF and would not be expected to play at all, which I also consider a bad move.

May 14, 2011 at 12:23 AM | Unregistered CommenterRyan from Waco

Having him here and not playing would be the worst posible action! If your going to have him up here racking up service time then he has to start in CF if hes not then you bring up Endy Chavez this is why we signed him isnt it?

May 14, 2011 at 1:03 AM | Unregistered CommenterMartin

He is not ready & his hitting streak is over. He needs at least 200-300 AB. he needs to suffer a prolong slump in AA or AAA & learn to adjust down on the farm, not in Arlington where the games matter.

May 14, 2011 at 10:04 AM | Unregistered Commenterstew

Obviously there's going to be some MAJOR shuffling on the 40Man, by JD,
if he is to accommodate Endy Chavez on the 40Man, for a short replace of Borbon.
Endy was pulled from the AAA game lineup, as soon as word hit about Borbon.

The fact that we haven't heard anything concrete, tells me JD is , at minimum.
is considering the thought of Leonys(40man) being UP for a two week MLB stint.
He said he wasn't going to rush (intentionally) Martin, but this scenario is a quirk.
Being a LHH, he would get playing time, rotating with Gentry. It could happen, but...

May 14, 2011 at 10:20 AM | Unregistered CommenterHubZ

HubZ, I agree, but there's no need to rush Martin to the Majors this fast... All though you never know what can happen

May 14, 2011 at 11:25 AM | Unregistered CommenterGarrett

Webb goes to 60 Day Dl & Endy is a buy ought. Pretty much expected shuffle.
I guess I am more than eager to see a very mature player, like Leonys Martin,
covering CF and being the lead off player we have always needed. Now he'll
go to Round Rock and I'll miss his exciting play in Frisco. Should be a short stint.
He's really that good.

May 14, 2011 at 2:00 PM | Unregistered CommenterHubZ

Hubz, i'm jealous you got a chance to see him. but the more he plays in round rock and the more at bats he gets at that level the sooner they can move him to the bigs. I was hoping to catch him in Frisco for a game. From all i've heard he's absolutely the real deal, and you gotta give alotta cred to our latin scouts for giving us the ability to grab a player of this caliber.

Here's a longer video of some Martin highlights.

Call it premature or even call me ridiculous, but from watching some highlights of Leonys Martin, this guy reminds me a lot of Carlos Gonzalez minus some power (maybe he'll develop some more pop). Martin's swing resembles Gonzalez's very much at least in my eyes, and both players have plus-speed along with above-average arms and gloves in the outfield.
