Forum > Favorite Underrated Ranger

Things are getting rough out there in the virtual world and with the rangers. I feel a riot about to break out. I wanted to lighten the mood, distract you and maybe make you think a little. We all know the big name Rangers throught history, Hough, Ryan, Juan Gone, Palmeiro, Pudge, Rusty Greer, Arod....

Its funny to think about the immense talent that we've been privelaged to watch play as rangers fans.

However I want you to name me One of your favorite Underrated (not often thought about, almost forgotten) Ranger Pitchers and Position Players.

P: I gotta go with Rick Helling 2B: The Dr. of Defense. Mark McLemore was my favorite Ranger growing up.

Now its your turn....

Like i have said before, I always liked Frank Francisco. Ramon Vasquez was always clutch when he got on the field, and seemed like a likable guy.

Kevin Gross? J/K

I always liked Scott Fletcher. If he'd been around for the pennant winners of the 90's he'd have been hugely popular.

Buddy Bell. +60.7 career WAR. (Michael Young, for comparison, is a +26.3.)

104th all-time, with very few eligible, non-scandal tainted players above him on the list not being in the HoF and a few dozen players below him in.

A-Rod - PEDs, contract size, now he's a hated Yankee...blah blah blah...the guy was a freaking monster for the Rangers, and very seldom is that mentioned

Pitcher, I gotta go with Charlie Hough

Scott frye or Rusty greer...both would run through a wall (and were often injured enough to prove it)

P -- from the old days ... the tandem of Jim Kern and Sparky Lyle

Kevin Mench and Frank Catalanotto

Pull T and dave. we are going for Underrated... greer was a pretty big star when he played. same as arod.

nice WMW... bringing up baby face catalanatto.

i'm really surprised i havent heard mickey tettleton yet. will clark. Aaron Sele. Gerald Laird, Gabe Kaplar, David Dellucci.... granted not many postings...

May 10, 2011 at 5:18 PM | Unregistered CommenterDcaggie06

Delluci was one of my favorites when he was here. Also Mark Derosa had a great season here in 06, I believe, and I was sad to see him go (although he hasn't played too well since then) and even though he was only here for a half a season, I was a big Kenny Lofton fan.

I liked Steve Buechelle and Dean Palmer and Ruben Sierra and Pete Incaviglia. Actually, before this current roster, the 88-92 Rangers were my all-time favorite Rangers teams.

colby lewis might be up there for me if he keeps up how he's been playing and how he played in the playoffs.

i was looking at an entire rangers roster it was pretty crazy seeing some of the players we've had and let go... man we had some poor decision makers in our time.

This might irk some.

Mitch Moreland.

He is continually pegged as a solid average 1st baseman (Billy Butler type) when he shows signs of being a possible future elite 1st basemen (think Adrian Gonzalez lite) at least offensively.

Micky Tettleton

@dcaggie -

I know we were going for underrated. That doesn't mean a guy has to be obscure or a marginal player who only got by on so called grit or hustle. A-Rod was an absolute beast, yet isn't given the "ratedness" his production deserves due to the exigencies surrounding him.

David Murphy/Kenny Rogers

Yeah, Pull T, but the TOPIC is Underrated Player.
Mitch Moreland now ... Mike Hargrove, when he came up.
Same Mold ... guts & grit

Pull T is right.

Greer was well known...in DFW. Definitely an underrated player.

And A-Rod, for the numbers that he has, and the numbers that he will have, is underrated as well. Take away the bad press he's received and he's the greatest thing since sliced bread. But now, even when he breaks records, it isn't breaking news because he got nixed by the national media. Love him or hate him(I personally don't care for him), the guy is an extremely rare talent that is reported on as if he were an average player. I assure you that he isn't.

My favorite underrated player was the short white guy with the 5 o'clock shadow. He had pine tar on his helmet, his jersey was always dirty, and he "played the right way". He was a coach's son and had enough grit and guts for the entire team!

May 11, 2011 at 8:37 AM | Unregistered CommenterFullerTron

@pull T

i know what youre saying. i actually, for one, do not hate Arod like the majority. until the whole PED thing, he had done nothing to disgrace the rangers. We just could no longer afford him. While with the rangers he played hard every game, busted his ass won an MVP and was an all around good guy.

Now Mark Texieira. I have all the hatred in the world for that SOB. he gave up on this team and quit on the team to force a trade. that in my books is the biggest sports sin you can commit. so while everyone boos Arod at the ballpark, i save mine and boo twice as hard at tex.

Ahh Gerald Laird the "5 tool catcher"

May 11, 2011 at 10:18 AM | Unregistered CommenterMartin

now i'm biased. way biased. But kenny rogers might be one of the most underrated pitchers of all time.

Pete O'Brien

Surprised nobody has mentioned our greatest closer of all time (youre not quite there Feliz) John Wetteland. However he probably doesnt fit in the category of underrated. When homeboy went in, you knew the game was over!
