Forum > Hilarious Rhads call

John Rhadigan, has one of 30 jobs that people dream of, and aspire, to hold. It is a simple question: If you interviewed QUALIFIED and EXPERIENCED candidates would Rhadigan make the cut? He is not qualified and actually hurts the viewing experience. His incompetence in the role exacerbates the recent poor play by the team on the field. Finally, the booth change may be forced by economics - he is a marketing nightmare. His delivery of SCRIPTED commercial interludes is forced and annoying. All I hear when listening to the TV broadcast is Charley Brown's teacher, Wa Wa Wa Waaaaa ( PS - He did finally figure out UEFA is an acronym which is pronounced You_Eeh_FA ... NOT U-E-F-A. )

How about his New York Life commercial spot? I dont know if he's goofing off on purpose or what but he sounds rediculous.

Here's where I'm at with Rhadigan after a month and a half: I have seen little to no improvement, I think his voice is not good for play by play, his feel and knowledge for the game is terrible, and he has shown no flow when calling what he sees happening on the field. I really believe this is one of the organizations biggest blunders in recent years (which is actually a pretty good compliment to the FO).

All that said, I am tired of ragging on him and I actually feel bad for him, as I imagine he has heard and seen many of the complaints that have been made about him and I know that has to add tons of extra pressure to perform. I have come to the realization that it isn't his fault in the least that he sucks. The organization hiring someone with no PBP experience is in no way his fault. It's not like he picked himself for the job. They could and should have picked someone with at least some minor league game calling experience, but they picked Rhadigan. I am done criticizing and critiquing Rhadigan and will stick to simply stating how horrible of a decision it was for Nolan to make this hire.

Came across info today that others may have earlier thought about and discussed. For about 20 years Rhadigan has been a Fox Sports Net property. Could that be at the center of how he got his new job?

Perhaps Fox Sports Net asked TEX to hire its guy for the vacant BPB spot after TEX let Josh Lewin go. The other guys who were in the running for the job were all qualified very experienced PBP guys ... except Rhadigan. Maybe as a part of its new broadcast agreement with TEX that asked for consideration for Rhadigan ... and TEX may have just gone with it rather than debate it after landing the lucrative deal last summer.

Two that I can remember from last night:

I'm not saying, I'm just saying that...

..and Micheal Young takes the lead, ties the team lead for R - B - I's!

I have noticed one thing, and its almost a quandry. I dunno if its just that its more entertaining when they are winning, but he appears to do a better job during the games they win. but like i said, it could be completely unrelated, and i'm just enjoying the game more cuz theyre winning, and not further focusing on the negatives such as how much Rhads sucks.

still miss lewin though. i'm having "BallGame!" etched on my tombstone when i die

I'm actually taking another turn on Rhads. I didn't like him at all, at first.
I didn't like Don Knotts on Mayberry at first either... eventually, he made
the Show more palatable. Rhads may be the goof that I forgive- not sure
Yet, but I find some things hilarious and extremely comical. Iconic, almost.

I am so tired of Rhadigan spoiling my tv experience! I also find myself turning the channel when we are down, just to get a break from him. I would love to see Dave Barnett or Steve Busby doing PBP. The day game Barnett called a while back was a welcome change that I wished would have never ended.

With all respect to this thread, and me agreeing about yall's points about Rhadigan, there are bigger issues going on with the Rangers team right now rather than the pbp guy....

I would be so thrilled if he at least made the 1st step and dropped the horrible, "Time to play ball, Y'alllll!" before every game. It's such a horrible way to start the game and always reminds me how much he sucks even on days that I am trying to give him a chance.

Exactly.

We had the best we could ever expect, but Nolan Ryan didn't like him personally, so he fired him.

Oh well.

So now we have Rhadigan. Embrace the greatness of a different form.

"Strike 3!!... strike... 2."

Classic. Rhads is awesome.

I'm not sure how you guys can say that he hasn't improved. He certainly has. Go back and take a listen to some of his spring training calls, and then watch a current game. He's getting better and will continue to do so. Please kill this thread now.

@Rangers100 - I was just going to mention that same "Strike 3!! .... call myself. I couldn't help but bust out laughing when he did that.

It so bad that I almost feel sorry for him and a bit sad to see him going through this. As for his home run calls... he has none.

Gotta live with it or just turn the sound off and watch.

Did anyone else notice that Rhads had no idea that a foul bunt on the third strike is a strikeout?? He was genuinely surprised and said something along the lines that Elvis fouled it, but when he saw him walking back to the bench he said he must have missed it... Wow, I'm continually amazed...

Sigh ... that's why I listen to the radio feed now. Means I also miss the meaningful dialog from those Brown Hand Center ads though. Got to give up something to get something.

May 17, 2011 at 11:35 AM | Unregistered CommenterWindingmywatch

You "listen to the radio feed" guys can all suck it! Us poor souls in the north Louisiana market have no recourse but to listen to Rhads. When will it end. If previous experience is not a prerequisite for the PbP job stick Julie Dobbs up there at least she is more pleasing to listen to.

JDB11 ... I live in Little Rock and get the radio feed for $20/season via MLB.com but watch the picture via FSSW. Depending on the TV feed the timing is either very close to being in synch to as much as 10 seconds behind the TV which is annoying but most cases its within 3seconds. Added advantage via MLB.com Gameday is the other game and player data. Combined its more robust game expeience than TV or radio alone.
