Forum > Endy in Center?

It's interesting that RR has had Endy Chavez playing CF in two of the last three games. Any word on how he looks? He is hitting around .350.

can he also pitch the 8Th inning, too. You know the Rangers are all about versatility.

Davis, Kirkman, and Borbon to Houston for Bourn and Lyon....would prefer this to solve CF whoas. And get a decent back end BP pitcher as well.

Gonna need more than two underachievers and a lefty with a ceiling of decent #4 to get a GG CF and a good bullpen piece.

No setup... No closer... No centerfielder... No backups... No trades... NO Solutions.
We're about to get much younger.

Everybody bitches about Borbon, but there's never any praise when, in his first games in four days, he goes 2 for 3 with a walk and 2 stolen bases.

Leave him alone and just let him play. He stunk in April and May last year and then he became one of the League's hottest hitters the rest of the way.

We all want a guy out there that catches everything, hits .310, steals 40 bases and bats leadoff with a .430 OBP. A Hall of Famer in CF ain't gonna happen, besides those guys are tremendously expensive and incredibly rare. The Texas Rangers have more pressing needs right now than worrying about Borbon.

Agree with Big D. Houston's not going to dump Bourn right now - there's no reason to. Texas will either have to go with Borbon, bring up Endy or Gentry, or find someone on the trash dump, which seems unlikely at this stage in the game. The best thing they can do is ride out Borbon and hope that he rebounds, and that this adversity makes him better. The pitching staff should be bolstered by the trio of Webb, Hunter, and Feldman in the next month, and Hurley should be close behind if he can get past that gruesome injury. If Neftali is really hurt, and we have to replace him - that's going to be priority #1 at the deadline. Priority #2 will be a TORP. Priority #3 will be addressing these CF issues.

The good thing is that even when dinged up, and even when they didn't really pitch all that great, they still swept the KC series. So hope is still strong.

Any of you stat guys have defensive metrics for Endy? Just curious if he's any better in center defensively than Murphy. If not then just keep running Murphy out there if they're unhappy with Borbon.

how about putting michael young in center field??

If the rest of the line up is hitting then Borbon is fine in CF. The two bags stolen Sunday were his 1st of the season. The 2nd issue: his lack of hitting along with the top of the Batting order not hitting leads to rally killings later in the game. Agree If he can hit the ball on the ground he will get on base, but his defense is the key for me.

Scooby - don't u think Wash and Pettis have considered MYoung @ CF and don't think he can cover the CF turf? But agree Murphy is not the answer.

We can all thank that miserable freakin TOM HICKS that we couldn't keep M. Byrd. He sure would look good right now ...

Not me above, FYI.

Looks like our near term, i.e. later this year center fielder will be Leonys Martin. This helps in a lot of ways, taking pressure off Hamilton and putting pressure on Borbon to put his best foot forward before he's traded and optioned to someone's AAA team. Everything I've read about Martin suggests he's a special player. Encouraging news.

as stated above by Old School the answer to our prayers has arrived. Leonys Martin is a stud. Plus speed, Plus bat, Plus Defense. i'ce heard the plans are to start him of in A to get used to the wooden bats (apparently cuban leagues use aluminum) depending on his progress he could rapidly be moved to RR and be on the roster sometime after the allstar break. Everything ive heard about this kid is good. i've basically heard he's the cuban Carl Crawford. Granted it wasnt a month ago some writer for SI said the same thing about borbon.....

regardless i think this is very very good news and atleast one positive thing to look forward too.

Now if we can just get some pitching....

So, Scooby - the fake you was or wasn't being serious about MY in CF?

May 4, 2011 at 1:48 PM | Unregistered CommenterAdam

I do wanna comment on Dirty Dawg's comment. Losing Marlon Byrd was huge. I think he was not just underappreciated by the rangers, but by baseball in general. He is seriously one of the best all around players in baseball, and definately belongs on an all underrated list. He's the Shin Soo Choo of CFs. i miss his game, and i miss his leadership.

I often wonder how the WS wouldve panned out w him on the team. We for sure never wouldve had to dal with the Vlad in RF BS. Hambone wouldntve missed the last 25 games (ok... he probably wouldve gotten hurt some other way) but i think his leadership was seriously missed with this young team.... especially couldve used him during all this MY mess this off season.

I just hope to god that he's clean. i'd hate to find out he's tainted from his supplement use. cuz he's a stand up guy all around. and he deserved better than hicks gave him.

I would try MY in centerfield and let him be the 8th inning reliever.

May 4, 2011 at 4:11 PM | Unregistered CommenterScooby Dude

Chavez is not on the 40man... plus he's LH ... also not as talented defensively in CF than are Gentry or Borbon. So his only shot will be if TEX needs COF help. Since he's LH ... that means he's more of a backup for Murphy. If Hamilton goes out long term ... then Deeds may be his backfill over Chavez. Deeds would also require a roster move.

Borbon is hitting .400+ over last nine games.
Leonys Martin signed for $15.5mm with big bonus
Guess who's going to be the Rangers CF'r?
NOT Pierre, Pie, Crisp, Byrd, Bourn or Chavez...
nor any other pretender or dream dude trade.
Follow the effort(s), then the Money.
Seeing Martin in Frisco, will be the dream view.
Martin IS the future.
