Forum > Rhadigan is the suck

Hey, the other thread was on page 4. And I'm too lazy to keep scrolling down and clicking page 4. So why not start a new thread where we can rant daily on another man's shortcomings. This is not a thread to debate if he's good or not or to say "have patience"...nope, this is simply a place for all of us to come and celebrate how bad John Rhadigan is at his job.

I am most amazed at how bad he is at calling homers. Even from my living room in Austin, TX I knew the Trumbo HR was gone if it was fair. Shouldn't the guy with the best seats in the house be able to recognize that too? Literally as soon as the ball left the bat, I said "shit, thats gone". Not our Rhads. "fly ball hit towards leftright, no left field........(fan catches ball 18 rows deep)......and its a home run" I also love his use of "medium deep" to describe a flyball that isn't a HR.

Oh well, in a little over 5 hours, we get to watch more of the ongoing adventure (abortion) that is John Rhadigan, play by play man extraordinare.

John Rhadigan seems to be a nice guy and all, he just has no clear or in-depth knowledge of the game whatsoever. He's entertaining in a way that I find his play-by-play shortcomings amusing and sometimes comical. There are so many comical mistakes that he's made already and not to mention the extremely awkward moments of silence and lack of emotion during an exciting play. I really liked Josh Lewin and John Rhadigan is in no way an adequate replacement. I don't understand why the Rangers would hire a guy to be the play-by-play voice of a team that just went to the World Series and has no idea about the game of baseball or its players. We should start a thread where everytime he makes an amusing or strange call to quote it and post it on here....it'd make for a good laugh. Hopefully Rhadigan improves and actually learns the game of baseball.

Elvis hits this one to right cent.. Uh left center.

(Tag) It looked like to me that he hit it off the end of the bat.
(Rhad) Yeah me too... (I'm sure that's what he really was thinking, especially since he has no idea which direction in the park is right or left, or the difference between a shortstop and second baseman)

Also, if you are going to call a 6-4-3 double play, make sure it's 6 that you are talking about, not 5.

Fart and fall down.

"Through the wickets... ugh, Home Run!"

April 20, 2011 at 3:35 PM | Unregistered CommenterHubZ

The thing that got me happened a week or so ago.

I believe Nelson Cruz was at bat and the pitcher threw a ball, making the count 3-1. Then Rhadigan says "Here's the 3-1 pitch. AND HE STR-- brings the count full..."

I don't get to see games often since I go to school in MN, but it seems like everytime I get to watch a game, Rhadigan is saying somthing wrong.

Well he's not announcing tonight, and man is it a welcome sound!

The first game this year that I have not turned off because of Rads. Tom is talking more than he has all year. Give me Dave Barnett and TAG anytime. Please Rangers give me Dave Barnett and TAG!!

Hoping Rhads is enjoying his day off as much as I am.

Ahhh....Dave Barnett.

I was in the "give Rhad time" camp, but listening to Barnett tonight, I can't defend Rhad anymore. Rhad is like my crappy Honda and Barnett is a new Cadillac. Please no more crappy Honda.

While it was a terrible game ... it was far more enjoyable having Dave Barnett doing the PBP than Rhads. Even in the post game wrap up you could tell that TAG was in a far better mood even with the loss having a professional by his side.

Dang I hope TEX management reads all the boards and makes a permanent change. If they haven't been sensitive to what the fans are saying ... then why would TEX make the announcement at all that this was a scheduled night off? Means they didn't want to give the impression that the change was permanent ... although that's what the fans want.

I can't stand Rhadigan and his "There you go boys" prhase after the Rangers win a game. That is maybe, and I do mean, maybe, a phrase you might use for little league games, not a professional team. It is obvious he has no clue as to what he is doing or anything about the game. It is funny how TAG has corrected some things that Rhadigan has said. I do not know who had the bright idea to name him as the play by play announcer, but they should take a pay cut for such a screw up.
Tonight it was enjoyable listening to Dave Barnett, as he actually knows what he is talking about and doesn't have all the dead air time.......I think it is time to send Rhadigan to the minors....LOL

April 20, 2011 at 11:30 PM | Unregistered Commentersam

Has Rhads once called a pitch as it was happening - as in: fastball inside, ball. or Slider away, caught the corner, strike 2? Barnett was doing it last night and I found it comical how I was noticing such little details that you jjust assume a major league play by play guy would do. Barnett also knew where the ball was going off the bat and who was catching it.

Is it possible we have been played? Maybe the Rangers wanted Barnett all along but knew the fans wouldn't go for it at 1st, so they give us the worst play by play guy in history, then slip Barnett in on a Wednesday night and all of the sudden he's a huge fan favorite.

This may or may not have been discussed, but why did the Rangers let go of Josh Lewin in the first place? I thought he was great. Sure he may be a little goofy and talk about some stupid things, but Rhadigan is terrible. He was tolerable doing Rangers Live and pre and post games, but this just seems like patchwork from FSSW. We have to do better, and we deserve better. The team just came off a World Series and we have the worst announcer in the game! This hiring was cheap, lazy and uninspiring. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE out with Rhadigan!!!!!!!

Barnett was such a breath of fresh air. "Curve over, for strike two..." Can it be?
An actual Pro Play-by-Play? Barnett could make Joe Buck sound even minor-sih, so
you can tell where Rhads might be on my pecking order. I like a PBP that is engaged
and knowledgable. I don't need the good neighbor, fence chat comic.

I've gone through stages this year, with Rhad's. 1) Give the guy an even break. 2) Maybe
I'll adjust? 3) I think he's getting better? 4) No, he's not overly active, but that's his style. 5)
Mentally tuned him out and focused on the game... I got pretty good @ #5. It got to a point
where I wasn't even catching anything Rhad's was saying. Which means, I wasn't hearing
TAG either.

Last night was a new awakening. The game was tense. I actually was tuned into Barnett.
TAG sounded much better also. WoW! Actually listening to a Professional PBP announcer?
What a CONCEPT!

April 21, 2011 at 8:36 AM | Unregistered CommenterHubZ

TAG actually sounded like he was ENJOYING being in the booth! The difference was shocking. Please, Rangers, make the change in the booth, even in a loss I enjoyed the TV broadcast for the first time this season.

April 21, 2011 at 9:17 AM | Unregistered CommenterTXRoger

I agree the Barnett is much, much better than Rhadigan, but Barnett has drawn a great deal of criticism himself. Perhaps it's due to being compared to Nadel all the time. Brian Dolgin was excellent with Nadel the other night, in other news ...

April 21, 2011 at 9:24 AM | Unregistered CommenterJP

When Lewin was away, I would perceive Barnett as a terrible fill-in. Hated him, thought he was the worst ever. Honestly, last night, he sounded like Vin Scully or Jack Buck. Just the contrast between he and Rhads made me realize how poor our broadcasts really are right now.

April 21, 2011 at 9:33 AM | Unregistered CommenterJW

This is without question the most juvenile and disrespectful thread on baseball forums today. I can't even imagine anyone having nothing better to do than tear apart another human being trying to earn a living.

April 21, 2011 at 9:47 AM | Unregistered Commentersamson

The entire "he's a good guy" argument is about as childish as they get. He's not doing a good job and fans know it. GET RID OF THE GUY.

April 21, 2011 at 10:34 AM | Unregistered CommenterPryor

Sorry, Samson, but a baseball announcer is a big deal to many of us. John Mulligan simply should not be doing this job. I always thought Barnett was a poor fill-in for Josh, but hearing him last night, I've changed my mind. He is leaps and bounds better than what we've been suffering through. Since we aren't going to get Josh Lewin back, maybe they will at least switch to Barnett.

April 21, 2011 at 10:39 AM | Unregistered CommenterJB in GP

Shut up samson. Rhad sucks ass we all know it. Its not our fault he cant do his dam job.

April 21, 2011 at 10:45 AM | Unregistered CommenterMartin

Samson = Rhads. How is ripping Rhads for his shortcommings any different than ripping a player for their poor performance? They are both human beings trying to earn a living.

The difference in TAG last night was striking - he sounded loose again and not trying to force anything in an effort to engage with Rhads or cover his misses.

I was much like Hub in the beginning, willing to let him grow on me...but he hasnt shown any growth. If nothing else, why not let him get some game experience in Round Rock or Frisco? Like everyone else, I see no problems with him as a person and really liked him in the post game and studio pieces so I actually am rooting for him. Last night did nothing but show how innept Rhads has been to start his tenure in the booth.

April 21, 2011 at 11:36 AM | Unregistered CommenterAdam

I, too, noticed the difference in TAG last night when he was working with an experienced announcer. He was chattier and seemed a great deal more comfortable. Rhadigan is sometimes painful to deal with now, but hopefully he will get better as time goes on.
There's no way of knowing why someone with NO previous baseball announcing experience was hired, but one thing is certain: If he doesn't get better, he won't be back next year.
