Mavs have the worst 2 thru 8 in the playoffs. As great as Dirk is, he can't carry them past The Lakers.
I think my team, the Thunder, are going to win the West. thru the Spurs and Lakers and will win it all if the final is anyone but Orlando.

As a Mavs' fan, I think I'd be okay with the Thunder winning the west if the Mavs don't make it. As long as it's not the Lakers.

For those that care about Mavs hoops anymore, here's my take on their playoff chances:
Along with the Rangers, I've lived and died a thousand times with the Mavs. Derek Harper's brain fart against the Lakers. The failed promise of the three J's. The futile '90s. The rebirth with Dirk and Cuban. The pain of '06 against Miami. The numerous flame-outs since.
Still, there is a chance this year. Just not a big one.
In the NBA playoffs, it's about managing your variables. The Lakers have Kobe, Gasol, Odom, Artest and Bynum. Five known and reliable variables that, if they play well, Lakers win. You can pretty much say the same about San Antonio, Boston, Miami (and, to perhaps a slightly lesser degree, Chicago, OKC and Orlando).
The Mavs' problem is they have to depend on MORE variables. If Kidd and Marion were in their prime, then they'd be OK to go along with Dirk, Chandler and Terry as the variables. But they're not. So you have to add more variables into the mix - Stevenson, Barea, Haywood, Peja, Brewer...and the more variables you add, the less certainty you have of winning in the NBA playoffs. Means you have to depend on more players needing to play well.
Now, if the Mavs can somehow get optimum performances from this whole group, then they have a shot of going pretty far. But that's asking a whole lot. I think they'll beat Portland, 4-2, then lose to the Lakers, 4-2.
