Forum > Jim Crane - Houston?

It looks like a group led by Jim Crane is on the verge of buying The Asrtos, this time without Mark Cuban. The group led by Crane/Cuban actually had the highest bid for the Rangers, but as we all know, Texas was bought by Greenberg/Ryan/Davis/Simpson. So, with Greenberg being ousted, and some grumblings about Ryan, how do you feel about the sale of Texas at this point? Are you still glad that the billionaire duo of Davis and Simpson took over, or would you have liked to see Crane/Cuban?

The idea of having Cuban as the owner is a lot more attractive than him actually being the owner. His ego could easily get the best of him in a non-cap environment the same as it did Hicks.

I'm still pleased to have Nolan's group leading the club. I want ownership that is just as interested in winning than their bottom line and I think it's good to have a baseball man among the leadership to balance out the money men.

que Rangers100 and his Nolan is a dumb country bumpkin rhetoric....

Adam - I ready that Crane actually pitched for Central Missouri, so he his also a baseball man. I'm not comparing him to Nolan in any way, just thought I'd point that out.

Cuban as owner? Thank goodness that didn't happen. I look at the Mavericks and can only believe that the family-friendly culture at Rangers' games would disappear. Bat boys would be replaced by strippers wearing bikini tops and mini skirts. Instead of seeing Nolan's grandfatherly face, we'd see more of Cuban's lurid mug.

As for the impact on the team. Tell how well that's worked out for the Mavericks. Interesting how no big-time free agent has been willing to take Cuban's millions. Makes you wonder .....

Instead, we've been blessed with low-key ownership that prefers to sit in the background rather than grabbing headlines to feed their ego.

I kind of like the idea of bikini-clad women at the Ballpark...

Time to realign baseball and put Astro's in our AL Division.

I've been asking for realignment for a long, long time. Something along the lines of...

Texas Rangers
Arizona Diamondbacks
Pittsburgh Pirates
Seattle Mariners
Cleveland Indians

Everyone write to Selig and request it.

For now that is great...but when and if those teams get good it would not be so good.

I would love a realignment that allowed at least some of the Ranger's road (division) games to be played in some time zone other than the Pacific.

Adam in Longview, I wasn't arguing against Crane at all, just stating my opinion that I am happy with what we have and I like the dynamic. And while Crane may have played some low level college ball, that doesn't exactly make him the "baseball man" that Nolan Freaking Ryan is, does it? But I see your point.

In my mind, realignment is the most important issue in baseball right now, at least for the fans perspective. It probably affects me as a Rangers fan more than others...but it sucks to not be able to catch the end of most of our divisional road games because I cant hang til past midnight. Houston is central but Arlington is West...makes sense.

The obvious solution is to move the 'Stros to the AL West. Six 5 team divisions. Having a persistent rotating interleague matchup seemed like a huge problem back in the 90s when the Brewers swapped leagues. Today, I don't think it's that big of a deal and the benefits of having equal division sizes work well.

The Astros end up with the "two time zone" problem, but it's not on the Rangers alone anymore. Besides, it's not like the Astros have great intra-divisional travel right now with Chicago, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Milwaukee and St Louis.

James R. Crane (Jim) is a man of means because he exemplifies the American Dream. He came from nothing by working hard as hell in a difficult business. JIm knows baseball having been an All American pitcher and would have ben the better owner due to his acumen. the Astros and baseball will be lucky to get him to run the Astros and bring them a World Series.
