Forum > Chris Davis ... Whispers from Uncle Boras
He wouldn't be a free agent for like 5 years right? Even if he wanted to leave he wouldn't really be able to.
Joe
I doubt "uncle" boras (back to your homespun internet persona I guess?) is spending a lot of time working on Davis' 2015 free agency....
Pull T
First, "epipheny" starts with an "e". It hurts your wise old sage writing style to have spelling errors.
Second, he has one option left. So if he's no on a ML roster all of this season, then next year he has to be on someone's ML roster, or else he goes through waivers. If he clears waivers, he could be sent to the minors once. A second time through waivers, and he could become a FA. So there is an angle to be worked towards early FA, if the Rangers don't want him in the Bigs soon.
Scooby Dude
Yes, I even screwed having. I didn't proof read. How embarrassing! Yes, Joe & Pull_T, your inputs a given. I should have expounded. That being said... make room or Trade, etc. Scooby is what I was looking for, as far as the time involved. Thanks guys
HubZ
CD- Epiphany #25 ... keep saying: itz just spring, itz just spring... itz spring training ... Happy BDay CD
HubZ
Finally-something Scooby Doo can half-ass do. He can spell. Too bad he doesn't know baseball as well as he thinks he does.
Arlington Lifer
No, Scooby can't spell 'EPIPHANY" either, but he did fill in the hole of how many option(s)
Davis has left... though he'll never clear waivers. So Boras is pushing him a little. It's his job.
Any Baseball ideas A.Lifer?
HubZ
It's in Texas' best interest to have Davis hitting like everyone thought he would 2 years ago. He probably won't make the team, but when Feliz makes the rotation, maybe Colorado will give us Huston Street for Davis - we get our closer and they get to play the CD sweepstakes.
WWJDD?
LOL...nothing more gay online than being a spelling nazi who can't spell. Grats Scoob!!!
Pull T
DO NOT TRADE CHRIS DAVIS FOR A BULLPEN ARM.
That would make no sense. He is worth a lot more to us if he is finally there. Risking the loss of a bullpen arm is worth finding out whether CD is now the real thing. If he is he would pull a lot more than that, or he would give us 4 quality years of slugging.
Joe
Guess what Adrian Gonzalez, Carlos Pena andTravis Hafner all have in common? Former Rangers traded for shredded up diatribes by Joe.
Arlington Lifer
@Arl Lifer~
Are you looking for a Blue Ribbon in memory category? I'm still waiting on a legit
answer to a Davis fix ... remember, with your answer, you may be put under some
scrutiny. Go ahead, stretch yourself.
HubZ
No hurry on cd, he will get his chance and if he hits for the Rangers he will play for the Rangers. So far he has been a spring training wonder and a regular season not so much. Time is running out??? What is going to do, not play? Play somewhere and put up the numbers and you will be rewarded.

Drop Treanor for Davis. Napoli is fine as a backup and Teagarden is at AAA if someone gets injured. Davis is doing too much to leave him at AAA.
Brett
Treanor is the obvious choice if all you need is a slot.... but still, where does CD get ABs? The presence of MY and Borbon are the pink elephants in the room. Wash will give MY minimum, 500 ABs, because MY is MY. Borbon can't play even subpar center right now. .... Against righties, we've already got Josh, Murph and Moreland... Against lefties, Napoli, MY... certainly not CD... So where does he play?
The obvious choice to me is, we've got to trade MY and/or Borbon and/or a bullpen arm for a CF.
The obvious fits are”
Marli Byrd – The Cubs 2b situation is a mess, & they need a OF with speed
Angel Pagan – The Mets need a 2B and have $ troubles. We’d have to eat a LOT of MY contract, or trade Borbon, who’s cheap.
Still to get CD some Abs, MY is the holdup. CD can play, 1b. 3b, DH…. That’s MY’s job too. IF MY goes, a lot of Abs open up for CD. If MY stays, CD sits on the pine.
With his athletic skills, I bet CD would be perfect for a crash course in outfielding too.
Tex Pantego
You make good points. I have viewed it from MY angle also.
The downside w/Young being the pivot point... Davis better
do the job and hit. It's a double whammy, if not. He'd be under
obvious big pressure to finally make MLB, but also the fact the
club made room for him, by trading a club house leader in Mike
Young. I don't think the Org would go that direction, to make room
for Davis. Too much downside pressure on Davis~ a very huge
albatross to carry around Davis' neck. I think he'd quake early.
Not the best scenario for CD's rebirth.
Boras still whispers...
HubZ
I think Hubz is right. If Moreland got hurt or was awful in his first 100 AB, I could see them bringing up Davis. But you don't trade away Young to play Davis. At this point, Texas needs him to finish off a great spring, and go gangbusters in AAA, so they can include him in a package for a starter in July.
The only possible way you might consider doing this is if you are forced to trade Young for a closer. But I don't see that happening, even with Texas assuming 1/2 Young's contract.
WWJDD?
why not try MY in center CD util c/if d/h
heehaw
Now there is a point of choice: Mike Young, as a center fielder.
Actually, he was an outfielder in minors etc. He has the arm and
the athleticism to handle the OF, but CF? . He's 34~ Jump on ball?
Basic instincts of center fielder needs? I'll revert back to History:
*No team ever won a World Series, w/o established Defensive CF.
HubZ
The 1997 Marlins rolled out 7 different CFs during the season, but Moises Alou and Devon White got the bulk of the starts (120 between them) at a net TZ rating of -3. UZR ratings were not available for 1997.
The 2004 Red Sox won it all with Johny Damon putting up a terrible -8.4 UZR, and the team at a net -14.6 UZR for the year.
The 2006 Cardinals had a net -4.1 UZR in CF. Aging primary CF Jim Edmunds posted a whopping 0.3 UZR that year.
The 2010 Giants won the WS with an aggregate UZR in CF of 8.6. Julio Borbon posted an 8.9 UZR by himself despite splitting innings.
The 2008 Phillies won with Shane Victorino in CF, posing 5.5 UZR, worse than Borbon's 2010.
If you accept that any 7-game series is pretty close to a coin flip (which I do), then let's look at WS runners up.
Victorino posted a -5.9 UZR for the 2009 Phillies. So the Phils went to back-to-back WSs, winning one, with a CF posting a net -0.4 UZR over the 2 years. THe team was a -6.5 UZR for the season.
In 2008, BJ Upton posted 7.7 UZR for the Rays, again less than Borbon's 2010 #.
The 2007 Rockies went to a WS using a variety of CFs: Willy Taveras (714 Innings) -5.8 UZR, Ryan Spilborghs (325 innings) 2 UZR, Cory Sullivan (257 innings) -3.5 UZR, andSteve Finley (155 innings) -2.9 UZR accounted for the vast majority of innings. THose 4 netted -10.2 UZR for the year.
The 2004 Cardinals got 5.4 UZR from Edmunds in advancing to the Big Show, again less than Borbon's 2010.
In 2003, an aging Bernie Williams gave the Yankees a whopping -20.3 UZR.
Julio Borbon is an adequate CF (at least defensively) for this team to go back to the WS.
Scooby Dude
Wrong forum Scoob... go back to Borbon- 'Turn a Blind Eye'
HubZ
I'd try and package Borbon with Davis in an attempt add another option at closer aside from Ogando/Lowe. We could go with Gentry as the 4th-OF'er as he can play all 3 spots
I think there are a few teams that both need a 3B'man AND have surplus closer/potential-closer-type guys:
1. ARI - David Hernandez -> 3B'man Melvin Mora is old and washed up
2. LAD - Kuo -> 3B'man Casey Blake is injured and probably needs to move into a backup role anyways as he's old and on the decline
3. TOR - Rauch -> they want to move Bautista off 3B to the OF and Encarnacion is horrible defensively at 3B
So we can dangle Davis who could play 3B and Young who could play 3B and 2B.
Kristen W.
I don't think Young's going to work, even if TX assumes half his money. If they're going to give up Davis and Borbon, they need to get someone good, like Bell. I realize Bell would probably also cost a pitching prospect too, but those three guys you mention, Kristen, don't cut it for me. It would be wacky for SD to trade Bell this close to the start of the season, though. I think TX is going to have to go in-house for their closer if/when Feliz goes to the rotation.
WWJDD?
If Treanor gets sent away, it actually lessens the role of Napoli. He'll be stuck on the bench more often, because Wash's Bible says never have both catchers in the line-up at the same time to guard against an injury. With Treanor on the roster, Napoli gets lots of DH/1B/C time and probably 450 PAs...without Treanor, Napoli gets more like 300 PAs max.
Davis is extra depth, and doesn't have enough value to bring a decent pitcher in return. I don't see him going anywhere unless someone wants to overpay grossly. JD will eventually find a way to weed out any dead weight on the roster, whether that might be Young, Borbon, Moreland, or Davis himself. I like this group just fine, thx! Go get em Rangers...

We've all had angst & pain over Chris Davis, in some way or another.
Now, it seems, he's not only laid the bat down, but seemingly a 'make
me or trade me' resolution. I've flipped left & right on Davis, but now...
I'm haveing my 24th apiphany on Chris.
Agent Boras loves his clients to go through 'free agency'. If we went
through hell & high water to keep the sprout here in Rangerland... just
how long would he really stay? Considering a whisper of "trade me now".
Worth more time in developing? Trade while CD's Value is at it's Apex?
Please help, my brain hurts.
