What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
OK... here's my HSO: Davis starts opening day at 1b with Moreland at Round Rock.
Davis has one option remaining and Moreland three. Sending Davis to AAA does nothing to see if he's figured out ML pitching ... so why did you bring him to camp. Sending Davis to AAA to rake it still does nothing to bring up his market value. He has to be worked at the ML level for TEX to find out once and for all whether he stays or goes ... can he contribute and what his value is.
So ... Davis starts for TEX for at least a month (more than the 59PAs he got last year) and Moreland keeps a bag packed at Round Rock.
On other related thoughts offered above ... Blanco isn't getting deal to make room for Davis ... any thought that Young could cover 2b and SS during batting practice is a stretch. Davis/Moreland/Napoli are better options at 1b than any option including MY ... and Beltre/Davis is a better option at 3b than any option including MY. So ... MY is a DH ... he no longer has a role on the field unless he wants to try his hand in LF.
I think Blanco has really proven himself this Spring.
I'd rather create roster space by making Napoli your 2nd catcher or by sending down a struggling Borbon than by getting rid of Blanco. Not that we need to create roster space right now but if Davis continues hitting like this at AAA and deep into the year we don't have space for him we will need to do something and I don't think Young is going to be traded because of the depth he brings to the lineup.
I love the talk about resting Andrus for 20 games with Blanco. I don't think you would lose that much bat or glove and you get a fresh Elvis throughout the year.
Please Wash, rest Elvis A LOT. He needs it to maintain the strength in his legs for that sort of determination he brings day in and day out.
Do you think Kinsler can play SS? Just a thought.
Bridging your last 2 posts Joe ... with these thoughts. It was your thinking about Davis vs Moreland that got me thinking. Since I don't agree with you that much ... wanted to give you props for thinking on this one.
Reference: "I'd rather create roster space by making Napoli your 2nd catcher or by sending down a struggling Borbon than by getting rid of Blanco."
Don't think TEX (or the rest of the AL for that matter) thinks very much of Napoli as a backup catcher ... especially for Torrealba who is NOT an iron man and in the TEX heat will need a real catcher to back him up.
Borbon isn't struggling if you hadn't noticed... hitting .368 .400 .474 .874. Not only will he start for TEX in CF I believe by the end of May he will be batting #1 with Kinsler #2 ... and Andrus moved to #9. The idea of Blanco staring at SS has some merit too. I don't think TEX starts Blanco over Andrus ... although giving Blanco ABs given his performance this spring has merit. I do think he needs to play SS at least 1/wk ... maybe 2/week in July and August.
But I think now more than ever that TEX will start Davis at 1b on opening day ... with Moreland at AAA.
I didnt mean that they should start Blanco over Andrus, only that they should rest Andrus with Blanco a lot, once a weak or every two weaks sounds good.
Also, I know Borbon isnt struggling. I meant if he were to struggle once the year starts you might consider sending him down to call up Davis and have Hamilton play Center.
I will be surprised if they start Davis over Moreland, but it may just be the right thing to do.
I just really hope they don't trade him for a bullpen arm. We owe it to ourselves to give him one more shot. Its not like his trade value is particularly high right now, its not like risking his value going down is a big risk or something. The big risk is letting him slip through our fingers when he just might be ready to be the next Nelson Cruz.
Well ... CD continues to make it interesting with a 2 out full count grand slam in the bottom of the 7th.
Sure, Chris Davis keeps 'doing it '... but what are we going to get @ the MLB plate? A sweet swinging Babe Ruth type or a nervous Barney Fife?
At this point do you go with Borbon (two errors tonight) at AAA and Davis getting playing time at 1st base for the first month or so? Let Borbon get his outfield woes under control and see what Davis can do?
If Davis does perform as it seems he is able do you renew efforts to trade MY for less than what you have been asking until now so that you can make room for both Davis and Borbon?
Tricky tricky tricky ... ... ...
but as they always say in these situations "its a good problem to have."
I don't think I want to lose Michael Young's leadership but with Blanco and Davis killing the ball he is looking more and more replaceable on the field.
Sort of wish he wouldn't have said all that now, not that I ever liked that he had said it all. The ghost of Chucky looms large it seems, even now.
Maybe you solve the whole problem by making Napoli your 2nd catcher? Or maybe you just wait for an injury or some other event. I do not know.
Lots of errors tonight ... and Borbon had 2 of them which isn't good ... but its not going to get him sent to AAA no matter how you try to make it sound like TEX would consider putting Hamilton in CF another season. So Davis roster spot is not in lieu of Borbon.
Davis performance has no impact on what TEX wants for Young. He was replaced on the field when TEX signed Beltre ... and Murphy/Napoli are a better platoon duo at DH than he is ... so he and TEX are being held hostage by his contract. (Ironic tonight that Young's error was on a dropped low throw from 3b Beltre. In 2009 Davis had 3 errors in 895chances at 1b. His first error was not until early June and was a low throw from Young. So turnaround is fair play and Young's first E at 1b was on a low throw from Beltre.)
Solution is going to end up very possibly being Davis at 1b and Moreland at AAA as you suggested up top. Nights like tonight make it harder and harder for TEX to not find a way to keep him no matter what the local sheep media say. It's as simple as that.
Error count is a bad metric for any position, but especially so at first. I love CDs work around the first base bag, but guys with range and guys who can actually produce DPs and assists are gonna have more errors and often a lot lower FP than 275lb statues who stand at the bag and catch only good throws for putouts.
What about this option?
Bourbon to AAA. Hamilton in center (yikes). Cruz in right field. Moreland starting left field. Davis at 1b. Beltre 3rd. Young dh/sub for anything other than OF,C,SS, and P. Yorvit starting C, Nap backup. Option Treanor. Option Teagarden.
Then, in mid April when Davis starts sucking, bourbon will have had about 20 games in AAA, and you can bring him back, DFA Davis, and fix the defense back the way it was.
Pull T ... wasn't defining the full value of CD's defensive capacity with "error talk". Simply found it ironic that MY logged an error at 1b not fielding a low throw ... which he was guilty of throwing across the diamond on scores of occasions.
I don't think you are defining CD as a "275lb statue" are you? As for his range and glovework I will take him over MY at either 1b or 3b any day.
"Roy Hobbs" ... TEX will not demote Borbon simply to make room for Davis ... forcing them to start Hamilton in CF. With Hamilton in CF you would start Murphy over Moreland in LF?
Young has marginal fielding skills. If Davis is on the roster Young is #4 at 3b behind Beltre, Davis, and Blanco. At 2b he's #3 behind Kinsler and Blanco. At 1b he's also #3 behind Moreland and Davis. As an OF he would be limited to LF and would rank #6. With Murphy and Napoli on its roster to DH ... Young has no real job any more. He's the 10,000# boulder in the middle of TEX roster... with about the same range and response time.
With Torrealba's limitations TEX needs its #2 catcher to be starter quality ... Napoli is not in any way a capable ML catcher. Even Jeff Mathis stole a base on him. Can't option Treanor and TEX will not DFA him either. As much as I can't stand Teagarden ... he has options and will end up starting at AAA. His effectiveness ceiling was his season at Bakersfield. Since then he's been an overhyped local fan favorite who has an inflated opinion of himself wearing #2. Hah.
Typo in above ... should have asked "Roy": With Hamilton in CF you would't (not would) start Murphy over Moreland in LF?
Davis isn't making the roster unless Young is getting the boot. Plain and simple. This is exactly why it would have made sense to pay half his salary and dump him for a pair of B-minus grade prospects, save $8m a year, and be done with it.
Explain how Mitch was the only 1B we had last year that hit consistently, he was our best hitter in the WS, and now he starts the season at AAA? It won't, can't, and shouldn't happen. Davis is having a nice spring but we have a full year to trade him or wait and see if an injury happens. Again I think Davis can be a good major leaguer, but there is nothing saying it is now or never.
Here are some 1st basemaen Texas dealt too early. 1. Travis hafner 2. Carlos Pena 3. Some fellow named Adrian Gonzalez
Davis is having an unbelievable spring, not a nice one.
Do you look at statistics before making your statements of fact? His spring is by no means "unbelievable". The immortal Jake Fox is having a better spring. Don't overreact to a good stretch. Mitch earned his spot last year and Davis is going to have to wait. Stop wasting time and energy worrying about a conclusion that is as foregone as this one.
P.S. Here is a link so you can see how believable his spring really is.
@LFloyd ... that's all nice what you say about "Mitch earned" the job. He was the last man standing and performed about as well as CD did his first half season at TEX. This is business and it's not like high school where someone's past performance is acknowledged but its the potential that has more importance.
Sticking Davis down in AAA doesn't do anything to improve his market value to TEX and that's more important to them than the delta in performance that MIGHT differentiate the two of them.
An alternative scenario might be to trade Murphy for talent and use Moreland as your #4 OF and carry Davis in Murphy's roster spot sharing 1b with Moreland and 3b with Beltre.
Both of those ... plus Blanco and Napoli contributions are better than any option that includes Young at either position.
There is no role in the field for Young on this team any longer. Until TEX deals with Young then they will never be any better than he is at the plate on any given day.
Davis was the starting 1B in 2009, meaning he earned it in '08. He flopped and then earned it again in ST last year. He flopped and lost it to Smoak. Smoak was traded and Davis was given the job again. He flopped. Mitch comes up and plays at or below league average (which is really good for an unheralded rookie.) Then when the playoffs start he is one of the leading hitters on the team. How does that add up to Davis being the starting 1B again this year? Get real.
I'm not advocating we dump Davis, but Mitch earned the right to be the opening day 1B. It's not like Mitch is struggling this spring either. Until Mitch flops in the bigs, he will be the starter.
Well, I don't feel like I was exaggerating all that much. I did know before I said Davis had an unbelievable spring that he had more than a 1.300 OPS. It turns out that two other guys have a higher OPS in all of baseball this spring, Arod and Ian Kinsler.
I'd say being one of the top three hitters in baseball is a pretty unbelievable spring although the word itself lends to hyperbole. Hyperbole in this case though is not entirely unmerited. Perhaps excellent, elite, fantastic or some other descriptor would be better when you have the third best OPS in baseball because the stats are actually entirely believable. The stats don't lie. Chris Davis' spring has been that good, worthy of a little hyperbole here and there, without a doubt.
27MAR~ Cubs start their #5 arm and BP keepers ... the last 8 ab's for Davis= 7K's.All against Cubs secondary ML arms... sound familiar?
I just hope Chris Davis gets a chance this year and seizes it. Nothing against Moreland, or Borbon, or anyone else that would need to falter to present that opportunity, but I just want to see Chris Davis reach his potential on the Rangers.
