What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
I am one of the biggest Tommy Hunter fans that there is, but he his last two times out are not helping him out at all. Espically with how well Harrison, Holland, Kirkman, Ogando, & Hurley have pitched. Also Dave Bush has done ok. It appears to me that Hunter will be on his way to the AAA rotation. I do not think it would make sense to have him as the long man. To me it would make more sense to have a guy like Bush as the long man if all three of the lefties make the rotation & keep Hunter stretched out as a starter. I also deep down would really like to see Ogando make it as a starter I think he would do real well. If that is the case then harrison or Kirkman could end up as the long man instead of Bush with Strop taking Ogando's late inning role. I know there are alot of outings yet before all this is decided but this is how it looks to me at the moment. I am concerned about Hunter i like the guy I hope he gets it together.
I've never been impressed with Hunter's stuff or his command, but he has put together some good stints in the big time. I would rather give another one of our young guys a chance. We just have too many young guys who have great stuff: Harrison, Kirkman, Holland, Hurley, Ogando.
I remain perplexed as to why JD came out saying Hunter will likely be in the rotation to start the year.
I have not heard Wash saying any such thing yet the media seems to have run with the idea that Hunter is the unannounced consensus candidate for the #3 starter spot.
Lets say Feliz closes, Hunter doesn't make the team and starts at AAA (if he continues to struggle), Webb starts at AAA to get stronger for a month or two, and Bush doesn't make the team. Lets say also that Kirkman, Holland, and Harrison emerge as our best rotation options with Hurley and Ogando coming in a close second. Hurley could be the long man and Ogando the setup man with the three lefties filling out the bottom three spots in the rotation. That would be wild, but right now it looks plausible. Would two of those lefties and Ogando be any more shocking? Maybe I am forgetting someone?
I've accounted for Lewis (#2), Wilson (#1), Feliz (close), Webb (AAA), Hunter (AAA), Hurley (long), Ogando (setup), Kirkman (start), Harrison (start), Holland (start), Bush (AAA or another team), and Feldman (injured). I think thats it except for Mclung and Tobin who aren't viable options for the rotation.
Mike, I wrote this on the other thread and posted about the same time you did. I guess we are on the same wave length on this one. I'm pretty sure people will be saying that Bush will be the number 5 but I'm not thrilled about that. I'd rather give one of our young guys a chance but maybe Bush should be long man over Hurley. Actually, that makes a lot of sense to keep Hurley ready at AAA. I like Ogando for number five if Strop can pick up the setup role from him.
First, they aren't gonna rush Hurley back unless they absolutely have to. And they don't need to.
I also don't think that Hunter's spot is in any danger - he'll have to have 4 or 5 bad games in a row during the real season for that to happen. Lots of people struggle in ST and then are just fine during the season. For all we know he could just be working on some pitches. That being said, there is some competition going, and I imagine if Hunter sucks it up in April, he could very well lose his spot if one of these other guys steps up and gets it done on a consistent basis.
I think you are right about Hurley, he will probably start at the AAA rotation, and he could be an excellent mid season option of he dominates there.
Wilson (1), Lewis (2), Feldman (injured), Webb (AAA), Feliz (closer)
That leaves Harrison, Holland, Kirkman, Ogando, Hunter, and Bush for the final three spots. I'm not including Beltre (injured), Mclung, Tobin, Tomko or others. We will need a long man out of this bunch.
I think it may make some sense to have Bush as your long man because whoever out of Holland, Kirkman, Hunter, and Harrison doesn't make the rotation needs to remain stretched out at AAA. If Ogando doesn't make the rotation he could setup, but maybe Strop's progression makes Ogando in the rotation more likely?
Hunter dropped a notch from #3 ... 10 days to improve or it's Long BP for Big Game Tommy
In addition to cj and colby, I think it will be holland, harrison and feliz. Ogando to close. Let hunter and webb start in AAA. Kirkman, Hurley, and Bush to the pen.
Not a bad group at all.
Hunter's outing today wasn't great but the box score doesn't tell the whole story. Several hits were simply seeing eye singles and slow rollers that the infielders didn't make plays on. He really didn't get hit hard, which is really the more important issue in spring training.
Things have definitely gotten interesting, mainly because both Feliz and Ogando had good outings last week. The number of innings each of them gives in their next outings will be quite telling. Either of those guys could be given a shot at the rotation - if so, it blows up everything.
It's also interesting that you bring up Feldman, Joe. His salary is going to make Texas try to play him, but you have to wonder if he's even going to get a chance here to see if he can do it again.
The idea of playing Feldman to get his value up for a trade when you have better options is just depressing. But it makes a lot of sense from a financial perspective, and not to mention from the perspective of needing to get value for the 10-15 million we are paying him over a few years. I don't think he will get a chance unless we have guys who are struggling in the big time, which will happen of course. But even then he's got to be 3rd or 4th down on the AAA depth chart. I think he needs to get his cutter back to compete again at the highest level.
My feeling is Hunter, Holland, Harrison also Krikman and Hurley should keep startin in AAA give Bush the long man spot. But if Feliz looks good today in his start, Hunter better watch out cuz his seat will get real hot.P.S. say Feliz makes the rotation AAA will role out Webb, Hunter, Krikman, Hurley and I'm not sure whos there 5 but still to start the season that would be a drity AAA staff.
Holland's going to make the big league club - that has to be a given, considering his experience and the need to get him some consistent big league experience. Like I said yesterday (and echoed in the papers today), Hunter is going to get a chance in the rotation, regardless of his ST. Kirkman and Harrison are both options, as is Bush. It'll be an interesting next 12 days.
