In what way?

As a different kind of centerfielder.

No, no he can not

His ceiling is more Rusty Greer than Jim Edmonds. He'd need to get into LaRussa's clubhouse and take a LOT of vitamins in his 30s to get close to Edmonds.

Do you see his deficiency on offense or defense?

Defense and Power

Well, I looked up their stats for three years at the same age, and first thing I realized was I spelled Edmonds' name wrong. Not a good start. Got Murphy right, though. Murphy's OPS in the 790s, Edmonds' in the 890s. Searching diligently for one stat where Murphy is in Edmonds' league, they are dead even in RBIs per AB (.155), which clearly proves that you can prove anything with statistics. Just kidding. Murphy isn't an Edmonds offensively. What I am really wondering is if he has the skills to play a good centerfield, because I suspect that he is ahead of Borbon offensively more than Edmonds is ahead of him.

David Murphy is a spare. A good fourth outfielder, a good (albeit boring) interview, and for whatever reasons, a fan favorite. He is a nice piece for this team, but no more than that. In the end he is the poster child for the word "fungible."

"and for whatever reasons, a fan favorite"
He's a Native Texan, he went to Baylor and he is white.

The ability to know the thoughts and motives of others is indeed a great gift.

Murphy is not a bad defensive corner OF - he's got a great arm at least, and doesn't make a lot of mistakes out there. He also has decent power for a backup, and average speed. If you look around the league at 4th OF types, he's actually very good. I don't know why anyone wants to rip on Murphy - Murphy is a great asset to this team.
WWJDD?
I remember when Murph took the slack and pulled taut, when Josh was down. Big gamer & good t-mate

The only talent he lack is speed and power...his heart and hustle outweighs it. Rusty Greer is a good reference. If Borbon doesnt produce there's no reason why he shouldn't be a starter. This guy produces. He might not hit for the fences but he is Mr. Dependable.

Could David Murphy become Jim Edmunds?
