Forum > If Neftali starts...

Assume, for the sake of argument, that Neftali Feliz becomes a starter. Who will end up closing the most games for the Rangers this year?

Ogando leads the team in saves, but Scheppers pushes him hard for the job after the All-Star break.

Ogando will get the 1st shot, but in the end I think the veteran Rhodes will end up closing if Nefti is in the rotation. I think we take for granted the pressure of closing since Nefti did it so well as a young guy. Most young guys can't do what he did. Don't be afraid to tell me I'm crazy if you think so. I'm interested in everyone's take on this one as well.

Rhoades is not a closer........... It will be Ogando, the dark horse is Lowe... Also dont count out that Jon Daniels will trade for Heath Bell.... He has stated that he will look outside the organization if the need arises.....

You're right Rhodes is not a closer. And I forgot about Lowe. Insert Lowe in my previous response instead of Rhodes. I think Wash goes with a veteran over a youngster if Ogando stumbles a few times, which I think he will because he's inexperienced. Here's to hoping I'm wrong because if Nefti is in the rotation and Ogando does a good job closing I think we all will be very happy.

Thanks for your thoughts. Somebody did an article the other day on the same-side, opposite-side hitters' effectiveness against our relievers (wish I could recall who or where) that indicated that pretty much all of our candidates had problems with opposite-side hitters. My guess is that a relative outsider like Scheppers or Strop will get hot wherever he starts the year and be given the chance here. The blow-em-away type seems the preferred model. Should internal options fail, a trade could happen, but not until later.

Ogando no doubt

The candidates are Ogando, Lowe and Scheppers, but I would not completely forget about Strop just yet.
Strop started his baseball career late, he definately got the tools for the job, he just have to harvest it a little more.

A lot of people think that Chris Davis is still going to bust out... that you can't give up on him... that if you just keep giving him chances, you'll eventually be rewarded. I don't feel that way about Davis. But that's exactly how I feel about Strop.

I'm with you on Strop and am one of those people on Davis.

Has anyone thought about holland as the closer? Barring his terrible relief appearance in the ws he has good stuff.

by his own admission Holland is goofy. That's not who you give the ball to in the ninth.
