Forum > MY, "I've been misled and manipulated"

This from mlbtraderumors.com

"I've kept a low profile out of respect for the team, the coaching staff, my family and the fans because I didn't want to put anybody on an unnecessary roller-coaster. Now, I think it's important to address the inaccurate portrayal that is being painted. The suggestion that I've simply had a change of heart and asked for a trade is a manipulation of the truth."

"I want to be traded because I've been misled and manipulated and I'm sick of it."

Young wouldn't elaborate when asked how he was "misled and manipulated," instead saying it "would be unproductive for everybody, particularly my teammates and coaches. I know the truth and Jon Daniels knows the truth and I will sleep well."

It seems to me from the above that what MY is talking about is the fact that the FO seems to have been under the impression that they could have their cake and eat it to, that they could keep MY at DH/Super Utility and also cut into his PA's by signing a Thome, Manny, or Napoli (the one who eventually came in through trade) type. The FO probably was not upfront with him that he would have to sacrifice a lot of at bats, or that this was a serious possibility, and that the team was not going to even come close to assuring him of his almost everyday playing time. Basically, JD, knowing he needed to assure Young of at least 140 games a year in order to keep him decided to sort of lead him on making him believe that he would receive this playing time while all along doing things that made it clear that he may not receive the playing time (without which he would obviously ask for a trade).

Why would JD do this? To gauge how far he could push MY without outright telling him that he could suffer deep cuts in playing time, something that would obviously lead to MY asking for a trade. And a potential motivation for this is that MY is not very tradeable and JD wants to keep him for depth in the event that Kinsler or Beltre go down with injury, but at the same time does not want to sacrifice the added production that would result in sitting him in favor of Napoli or Murphy.

OR, perhaps JD didn't want to tell MY that he could suffer deep cuts in playing time because then MY would ask for a trade and the fans would get pissed. In this scenario JD all along wanted to trade MY (and did not want to keep him for depth or knew that MY would never want that) but played the have your cake and eat it too song and dance because he knew he couldn't outright tell MY that he would suffer severe cuts in playing time because of the PR disaster that would ensue when MY asked for a trade. If this is true the above possible motivation of JD, that he wanted to keep MY for depth and because he is not tradeable, would give way to the fact that JD was not straight with Michael because he knew he could not be because of the PR problem that would ensure. JD wanted all along to be able to tell the fans that Michael is unhappy with his new role and that is why he is being traded when all along the real reason is because he would have to suffer substantial cuts in playing time in order to stay, or at least, JD was going to make him believe this in order to get him to say he wanted a trade regardless of whether Wash would have ultimately let MY ride pine for a substantial number of games.

Bottom line, the FO was not upfront with MY. They should have just told him that he had no guarantee of the playing time he obviously wants and he would have asked for a trade and it would not have been ugly. And of course there are two sides to every story, I'm sure JD feels like he can act like this because he's paying MY 16 million dollars a year, blah blah blah. I sympathize with that line but the bottom line is that you have to be upfront with people about your expectations and motivations because otherwise shit blows up in your face. JD, let this be a lesson to you that you have to be straight with people. Not everything is a little Machiavellian game of poker, and your players are not GM's of other teams that you have to weave and bend around in order to get what you want. Within the organization you just have to be upfront and that is a necessity regardless of the in fighting that has been going on amongst Ranger's brass.

What now JD?

I think the tendency here is obviously going to be to pretend like MY is entirely to blame. But all we have been sold is one side of the story while MY has remained mostly quite for the good of the team. Perhaps MY really has been misled and manipulated. I think we owe it to him to try to find out or at least realize that we don't know the whole story.

Perhaps JD should come out and apologize for not being as direct as he should have been with MY. I don't think he has been a sinister antagonist or anything, but it seems like he may have been misled MY in order to get what he wanted.

Okay, Joe, all of this or parts of it may be true but I'm interested in knowing if MY wants to be traded so badly why he won't expand the list of teams he would willingly accept a trade to? There are two sides to most all disputes but I wonder if things from BOTH sides could have been handled more privately until this was resolved? And, if his list of teams he would accept a trade to were expanded, this could have a win/win aspect for both sides if he really wants to be traded. Maybe, he wants to put the FO's 'backs to the wall' because he feels misled and manipulated. I think he's been steaming since the Beltre signing and it has come to a head for him to call out JD in the Media.
Nolan's and JD's comments left the door open for resolution with MY but his comments may only inflame the situation and close any opportunity for him to stay with the TR's.

The NAPOLI deal seemed the straw that tilted the Balance
of Expected Play for Mike. Maybe there' something deeper?

I think both parties have played this poorly - though we don't know fully what is happening or being said behind closed doors . The Rangers felt there was a need to make a statement - and MY felt it was important to respond.

While none of us can speak to what the actual plan is/was with MY - is not safe to assume that if MY was productive, he would play? Why would Ron W keep him out of lineup if he was the best option to make club better? I liked the Napoli pick up because he has done well in a limited role, and would have helped provide insurance for Mitch at first, catchers if one(both) fail/get hurt/etc. I never saw him as the primary DH option.

I has been obvious that MY's ability to play defense has deteriorated. He has also seen his power decrease. It is also readily apparent that he is an important leader on a team that ended up one step short of a world championship. My hope is both parties will get together and get this fixed. I like the Rangers chances with MY better than without him.

if he would've fielded his position and hit when it was time to hit, this wouldn't be an issue. He is a liability and to first complain about moving to 3B for Elvis, they aren't even in the same league at SS. Will be the same at 3B with Beltre. The guy is a cock and the happiest day as a Ranger fan is when they get rid of him, for me personally.
