Forum > Lots of love for Michael Young

So I've been listening to MLB Radio on my Sirius today and I must admit that I'm blown away by all the Michael Young love out there from around the league. The show hosts are big on Young, I can't count how many fans called in talking about how Young would be a great fit for their team. Angels fans called in wanting Young, Red Sawx fans, Mets fans, Reds fans, Tigers fans. It was unreal. I know fans don't make front office decisions but I'm wondering if there is one GM out there who is high enough on Young for JD to work his magic. We only need one GM to bite. After the Angels took Vernon Wells, I believe anything is possible. Come on JD, find that one GM that is still high on Young and do your thing!

I'm a big Michael Young fan but a bigger Texas Rangers fan. I realize it is a business and I survived Pudge, Sierra, JuanGone, and many others not being Rangers anymore. I think if there is a way to pawn MY to someone in order to make the Rangers better then JD will get it done. Michael Young is subpar defensively and is obviously on the downhill slide. Now that it is out in the open, maybe a few teams will compete for Young and the Rangers come out a better team.

?

But why then would multiple teams "compete" for a player who is "subpar defensively and is obviously on the downhill slide."?

That makes no sense.

You're right ww, it doesn't make sense. But it didn't make sense for the Angels to take on Vernon Wells. I'll say it again, after seeing them take Wells' contract, anything is possible. We don't need a bunch of teams competing for Young's services, we need one GM to think too much of him so we get a decent return.

Why do you think he made it into 6 All Star games... the fans certainly didn't vote him in. If I recall correctly every time he was voted in by players or selected as a reserve. His meager star power didn't get him in.

So what you're saying Marktown... Mike Young debacle has even hit Space?

The reason teams would want MY is that he is a much better player than this website and board would like everyone to believe. His reputation with other teams is higher than with his own team, its stupid.

Well said Tre.

There is talk on here for a Young-Carlos Lee swap. Haven't we experienced that before. Trading a sub-par defender who hits for average for a guy with no defensive value and doesn't hit for average. Insane.

Or Aaron Cook. Who is horrible.
Or Jose Lopez. Who can't hit.

Its not like the Rangers are going to NEED an OF he would be a DH you know the guy that doesnt go on the field

Hitting for average is way overrated. Michael Young hits for the emptiest .300 I've ever seen. Mike Napoli is a career .251 hitter. Young a career .300 hitter. Young's career OBp is .347, because he never walks. Napoli's is .346, because he walks a ton. And Napoli can hit for power.

Young has never had 25 HRs in a season.

Young has never walked 60 times in a season.

And enough with the Paul Molitor comps. When Molitor moved to DH he hit .320 or better and had an OBP of .389 or better 5 times in 6 seasons. In the 10 seasons from 1987-1996 he had an OPS higher than Young's career average 9 times, including 3 seasons with a better OPS than Young's best. He had a career OPS+ of 122. Young's is 105. 100 is average. Young is one of the most overrated players in baseball.

@martin

According to this site and its followers, two of the problems with keeping MY is that he takes away ABs from Murphy/Napoli and when he plays the field he is a liability. So if these things are true, why would they trade MY for Lee?

MY may be overrated and hit an "empty" .300 but then what does that say for Lee? They essentially are the same hitter statistically. MY has an edge with average and Lee with power. On top of that Lee wouldn't see the field on this team. He would be a DH only. Thus taking ABs away from Napoli/Murphy and having no defensive value.

At least trade MY for prospects and not Lee. MY has more value to this team than Lee.

P.S. Jeter is more overrated than MY

Because Napoli and Murphy are arguably better offensivly.
MY and Lee are diffrent kinds of hiters. Lee is better then Napoli and Murphy no question.

BA OBP SLG OPS
Lee .287 .339 .495 .834
MY .300 .347 .448 .795

Lee is better than Napoli/Murphy and MY isn't. Yet their numbers are very similar. Interesting.

MY is on the decline.. Lee will have a bounce back year
That 300 avg from MY yeah you wont be seeing that any more so that will bring his obp down as well since he doesnt walk. And id rather have those 50 points in slg% from Lee then all those slappy singles from MY
