Forum > What the Fudge are the Rangers Doing with Vlad!?!
I thought the same thing.

Move Napoli to catch against LHP, expose Treanor to waivers, trade Murphy for prospects, sign Vlad and you have the sickest offense in baseball with a roster spot to spare for a Borbon/Gentry platoon in CF or a 6th starter to begin the year.
With this offense we could rest Hamilton and Cruz for 15 games a year without feeling it, that is how good this offense would be.
Young would play 40 games at 1st, 15 at 2nd, and 10 at 3rd. That's 65 games for Vlad, and you get another 30 by sitting Hamilton, Cruz, and Young for at least 10 games throughout the year. When Hamilton and Cruz rest Moreland spells them with MY at 1st and Vlad at DH. That would be the sickest most well rested, deepest, most balanced lineup in baseball and all you really give up is Murphy, a guy who they must not be planning on using much anyways, and Treanors superior defense at C. Maybe Yorvit can help Napoli call a better game.
Joe
This is very strange. Theres disrespect coming from both sides i dont see him coming back.
Martin
Michael Young is leaving. Vlad is coming.
Scooby Dude
doubt it. but well see
Martin
Scooby,
What do you think about Murphy leaving and Vlad coming? If you knew you couldn't trade MY would you trade Murphy for having Vlad play 100 games? He shouldn't be playing more than that anyways, and I can't see much need for a PHing LHB seeing as how almost all of your guys save Blanco would be plus bats.
Joe
Joe
No. I'd rather have Murphy than Vlad. I bet JD sees it the same way. Hence, if Vlad is coming, I think Young must be going.
Scooby Dude
Trade Napoli to the Angels.... just joking...
Steve
To flesh that out, Young, Vlad, Napoli means not enough OF versatility and too many RH hitters, not enough LH hitters in the bench/platoon roles. Also, I just don't see Treanor getting cut/traded. So if it's just Vlad in, Murphy out, then Moreland is your 4th OF and Vlad is your 5th OF. That's no good at all.
Scooby Dude
Vlad instead of Murphy? Really? In what way does that make sense?
Vlad just takes up a roster spot and crumbles in the second half of the year because he is old. He is a bad signing at any price.
And trading Murphy for prospects? You would be ok with that?
Philly
If Hamilton is signed for 2 or more years, then Gentry offers more to this team than Murphy, and Murphy has trade value and is about to get expensive.
Goodasgoldyesmaam
The reason why you trade Murphy is because with Napoli getting at bats at 1st you don't have any at bats for him without injury.
But of course we shouldn't trade him unless we can get some good prospects for him.
As far as people saying Murph should get at bats instead of MY I think that is probably rather unrealistic, at least if it involves sitting MY for more than 20 or so games.
If we aren't going to get anything for Murphy then I say trade him, expose Treanor, move Napoli, get MY more field time to get Vlad in the lineup. Further, it doesn't seem like these same playing time problems are going away next year if Borbon proves himself, and even if he doesn't Murphy is inadequate in CF and we must keep Hamilton out of CF for the vast majority of games.
Murphy is the odd man out so we ought to improve the lineup if we can assuming that they aren't going to trade MY which they aren't.
Joe
After offloading both Treanor and Murphy and adding only Vlad there is room for Gentry to be your 4th OFielder with Moreland and Vlad as your 5th and 6th.
Joe
So you would give up: Treanor's defense, and Murphy who is not expected to play much.
So you would get: Vlad's bat for half of games, Gentry's speed, and Napoli's bat against LHP. You say you would get Naps bat anyways, yes, but not in a scenario that also gives you Gentry's speed and Vlad's bat just for Murphy who wouldn't hardly play and Trenor's defense for 60-80 games.
Of course we ought to do it only if we got something nice for Murph.
And you say we would lose the LHB off the bench for PHing, but I don't think Murphy would be a good PH without regular playing time and the need for PHing is diminished on a team with almost no below average bats except for Gentry and Borbon. And you could always PH for them with Vlad even against a tough RHPitcher.
Joe
Join Daniels, Just said on the Norm Hitzges show that the Rangers had offered Vlad a one year deal for more $3.5m around Christmas. He also said he would still welcome Vlad back in a limited roll. I agree that the only reaosn to bring Vlad back is to package Mike Young in a deal to fill our biggest weakness; Center fielder or a starting pitcher. Additionally, Daniels said, Feliz will be stretched out for starter innings in spring training.
Ric
@ Joe: I don't think Treanor is going away. Therefore, no to signing Vlad and trading Murphy.
Long term, here's how you get Murphy ABs:
VsLHP:
LF: Hamilton
DH: Napoli
VsRHP:
LF: Murphy
DH: Hamilton
Of course, that means Young either is traded or accepts a bench role. But doesn't that accomplish 2 major goals, (1) improving the lineup vs an everyday Hamilton (LF)/Young (DH) scenario, and (2) extending Hamilton's career as a SuperStar hitter? Doesn't it just make the team better?
I also hear JD on Norm's show. He also said, regarding ABs in the wake of the Napoli trade, that guys are going to have to play well to maintain playing time. This was in direct response to a question about Young's PT. Basically, oif Young doesn't hit well enough to keep the bench from overtaking him, he doesn't play much.
Scooby Dude
Scooby,
Didn't JD also talk about possibly signing Vlad in a limited role?
Who is the odd man out if it isn't Young, and I can't imagine there would be any point of bringing in Vlad unless Napoli was going to be your second catcher in the absence of a MY trade of course?
I think this is just JD trying to get MY to say he wants a trade, but OBVIOUSLY MY won't do that until May when he will have complete control over where he goes. And I don't think JD will deal him without him asking for a trade. MY will play happy until he has his no trade rights and then will ask for a trade if they really are going to significantly dock his play time. Does JD have the balls to trade him before that happens while he is simultaneously saying he is happy. No, that would not be ballsy but dumb after the face time MY got for his sacrifice. Michael waits and stays or waits and goes, where he wants and on his terms. Furthermore, right now JD is the boss but come the season Wash is the boss and Wash cares more about the clubhouse than JD. Wash will not sit MY to play Murphy.
Joe
Joe
You would be giving up a roster spot for a overpaid guy. We can't change what MY is paid. We can prevent a roster spot being taken up by a old hitter who can't play effective defense and can't put together a full season because of age. If you want to trade Murphy and can get a good deal out of it, fine. But signing Vlad is a waste as this team is currently constructed.
Philly
If you assume that MY's value to another team that needs him is, maybe 11 million, 10 million and 9 million per year, then what is the true cost of MY? That would mean that it costs $18 million to subsidize the trade, if one occurs, and another $11 million to keep him for 2011. That is a total cost of $29 million in 2011, $18 million of which is spent either way.
Goodasgoldyesmaam
Vlad is a much better fit in Baltimore. If he can't get a reasonable offer from them, he should sit out until mid-season. Somebody will have need for him and dollars to spend by then.

Mlb trade rumors says, "2:48pm: Guerrero is not excited about the Orioles' offer, according to Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportes.com (on Twitter). The offer was for about $2MM and now the Rangers "return to the race" for Vlad."
So with Napoli, Vlad, Murphy, etc. Surely we have to be making a trade. Right.
