Forum > How to Wildly Improve the Rangers Offense With Little Downside?
Use your extra roster spot to go get a LH PH off the bench to replace Murphy.
Joe
I am not sure where this Keeps coming from. I'm a huge homer for trading for rasmus,
But borbon and Murphy? No shot. Add holland and perhaps there is a discussion Worth having. Still interested?
Aggiecurt05
Maybe throwing in a pitcher wouldn't be so bad, but not Holland or Kirkman, we do have a lot of pitchers though.
Joe
Matt Kemp is a much more viable trade target than Rasmus. He already makes $7m, likely will make $10m next year, and then is a FA, as opposed to Rasmus, who will make just $500k next year, has 4 seaspns of team control left (maybe 5), and is a much better CF defender. I think Kemp could be had at a discount.
Scooby Dude
Also, the Cardinals don't really need Murphy, having Matt Holliday/Lance Berkman at the corner OF slots.
Scooby Dude
Maybe Grady Sizemore? Too risky with him coming off the injury?
Joe
I like Kemp offensively, but is he really as bad as some have said defensively?
Joe
Yes Joe...I'd rather put Face in center than Kemp (only slightly exaggerating)
And for me, with Napoli, I'd rather carry the third catcher than dump Treanor...or at least I am leaning that way.
Pull T
With regard to Kemp's defense, please remember that CF in Chavez Revene is cavernous, while at RBiA it's much more reasonably sized. Also, Kemp would have premium defensive COFs around him. Oh, and he'd go 30/30 hitting in this ballpark.
Scooby Dude
Just leave the offense alone if someone goes down we will be ok with the depth in the minors. the rangers already have an amazing offense. no NEED for 9 all star batters.
The only need is an ACE and we can wait until the ASB for that. we have an amazing OF defender in Gentry and a RHH COF/1B/DH in Chad tracy and probably the best backup INF in Blanco

I agree with HOUR, MY deserves much better treatment, with the only real treatment is a trade for at best a ba contact. Ie Johan Santana or Beltran from the Mets, Soriano from the Cubs, Papelbon from the Redsox with a reliever tossed in ie O'Day or Lowe, Sizemore or Hafner from the Indians or maybe the most likiest Peavy from the WhiteSox. Sign Guerrero. Be very leary of picking up too many K Kings like NapoliN Rasmus, Kemp and several I just Mentioned. Very few runs are scored on strikeouts so the best bet would the pitchers named though all thre are dropping off in mph FB. I also con
cur on Gentry as a very viable 5th of with some upside though he is 28 and do not forget CD for with a little discipline he is no more a K King then many mentioned. The team gas worked very hard at PD to backtrack NOW.

Correct HOUR to Harold Reynolds

Well even with possibility greatly diminishing of signing Guerrero now that we have acquired Napoli. Believe it or not the at are still there if he is content with ~100 games and ~400AB and the chance for more and a shot at the World Series again (only if he is willing to sign for no more than $5M plus incentives).
The games would have to be distributed something like this:
Young would play 10 games at 1B, 15 at 2B, 5 at SS, 15 at 3B and 80 at DH for a total of 125 games and ~530 at bats (including pinch hitting).
Moreland would play 110 games at 1B and 15 in RF for 125 games total ~500 at bats.
Napoli would start 42 games at 1B and at least 42 (if there are no injuries to Torrealba and Treanor) at catcher for ~84 games, ~370 at bats (including pinch hit at bats and late inning substitutions).
Guerrero would then start 82 games at DH and 15 in RF for ~97 games and that would put him around 408 at bats including pinch hitting appearances.
You might ask your self does this mean we are giving Cruz 30 days off? No, absolutely not (even though he didnt play like 50 games during the season due to injuries). We just move him to LF the other 15 games when either Moreland or Guerrero are playing the outfield, while Hamilton gets his 15 games off.
Lets say Moreland and Guerrero are producing at a high level and you want to give them more at bats without sacrificing more playing time for Hamilton and Cruz. Well, you just move Hamilton to CF, Cruz to LF and Moreland to RF and give Guerrero more playing time at DH. I think we can afford to give Borbon like 20-30 games off specially against tough lefties. So those 20-30 games that Borbon is not on the field can be used for the hot bat going at the time, either Napoli, Guerrero, Moreland or Young.
As far as Murphy goes. We need Murphy plain and simple as he provides big time outfield insurance. Unless the Dodgers are willing to trade Kemp for say Harrison, Borbon, Eapply and Strop. Although I dont think he is not available at this time, he would be a heck of an upgrade in CF and would be easily be a 30/30 and top of the order guy. Even if we have to give up Holland and Borbon I would still do it. I'll take a proven all-star player over a high "potential" player ANY time. He would make this already good looking lineup look sick'ER. Just imagine...1Kinsler, 2Kemp (big if), 3Hamilton, 4Guerrero (big if), 5Cruz, 6Beltre, 7Moreland, 8Napoli/Torrealba, 9Andrus. Absolutely no easy out in the lineup. And Young in the bench as the $16M cheerleader! Wow! lmao!
On the CF subject we can afford to wait unitl June or July to see how Borbon and Gentry are producing, and maybe give Beltre a chance if he is producing in the minors. As I said before, Pagan and Beltran would still be available by then. The Mets have already said they will eat more than half of Beltran's contract for the right trade. With BJ Upton and Kemp as long shot possibilities of being available.
Enjoy your "hump day" everyone.
ALL IN FOR JOHNSON
I think MY playing less than 142 or so games is unrealistic without him asking for a trade.
I also think Vlad in the outfield is unrealistic.
But maybe something like this could work with getting Vlad more like 80 games plus PHing. Maybe you could put MY at 1st instead of Napoli while you start Napoli at C against tough lefties.
Joe
I don't see us bringing back Vlad anymore. Playing him in th OF is not going to happen. Also Napoli seeing 82 games at catcher is way too high. Realistically he might see 5 games at catcher barring an injury.
Lfloyd
Lfloyd,
Thats not what I meant, playing Napoli at C for 82 games.
I think All In said 40 games at 1st and 40 at C for MN, I was thinking he could play 20 less at 1st and 20 more at C. But that only works if we realeased Treanor or kept him for a very minimal role.
Joe
Joe
All though 15 games in RF might seem high for Guerrero, he doesnt have to play the entire game. I think we can afford playing him in the outfield for less than 7% of the season.
Regarding Napoli, I meant 42 games at 1B and 42 at cacther for a total of 84 games. With his defense so poor at catcher I would want him there more than 25% of the season unless one of the other catchers get hurt.
If Young is not content with playing ~130 games the trade him. But I dont think he would make a big deal if they cut his playing time by 10%, since he is not on a contract year at all and he is a team player. Everything will work itself out regarding distribution of playing time believe me. We got a good problem in our hands.
ALL IN FOR JOHNSON
I agree this is a good problem to have, I just don't know if having 2 RH bench bats that offer very little defensively. Napoli playing 42 games at catcher seems high to me, but I could be wrong. I can see us getting in to ST before we make a move. Last year we lost Dutch, Hunter, and Kinsler in ST. It won't hurt us to have "too much" depth to start off the season.
Lfloyd
Exactly.
ALL IN FOR JOHNSON
Sorry everyone for the retardo trip down fantasy trade land that this forum post manifested.
I've largely avoided the trade speculation bull shit until Napoli, don't know what got into me.
I do think Kemp would be a more realistic trade target than Rasmus or Sizemore for a CF upgrade but his defense disturbs.
I also think that exposing Treanor to waivers, signing Vlad, and trading Murphy for some good pitching prospects is more realistic, but I don't think the FO would accept the inferior defense at C and 1st because MY would have to play up to 40 games at 1st, 15 and 2nd and 10 at 3rd to make room for Vlad's 70 or so games, which would put him at 300 PA's with other ways of working him in like putting Moreland at the CO for 20 games a year to spell our big guys and putting Young at 1st for those additional 20.
I don't think I want to trade for Kemp anyways because Borbon is going to have a breakout year with a .750 OPS, great defense, and his base running will improve.
Joe
Welcome back now only if u could stop writing so many long posts youd be all set
Martin
Signing Vlad is a bad move. Can you drop that from your "retardo ... fantasy trade"? He just fills a roster spot that has already been filled.
Also, your posts are too long and you post like 6 times in a row.

Trade Treanor or expose him to waivers.
Move Napoli to be your C against LHP and let him mash while accepting his poor defense for 60 games a year. He will learn to call a game from Yorvit and we will be fine for those games.
For the next step I am copying All in For Johnson but not completely. Thoughts All In?
Sign Vlad to play DH when MY plays the field, and in addition, sit Young for 20 games a year. That is 30 games with MY playing 1st, 15 at 2nd, 15 at 3rd, and 2 at SS. In total, that is 82 games, which would give Vlad 330 PA's with 40 as a PH. That totals 370 PA's, and if someone gets injured which THEY WILL that puts him over 400 PA's.
Also, you could rest Hamilton and Cruz for 10 games a year, putting Moreland on the corners. Those guys need rest PERIOD. Who cares how much they whine, and if we had Big Bad and Napoli in the lineup we could absorb the loss of their bat for 20 scattered games a year. That would increase the number of games MY could play 1st by 20 games, making Vlad's games go up to 102 and 408 PA's before PHing. This would be a bonus but is not necessary to the scenario. Alternatively if you don't want to rest Cruz and Hamilton just take 20 games from Rasmus in CF to put you over 100 games for Big Bad.
(If Baltimore is going to only give him 500 why oh why Big Bad would you not come to Texas to play on what is shaping up to be the best team in baseball if we can get an ace by deadline? Why not come and win the series?)
The biggest loser is Murphy and this is the next step in wild improvement to the offense.
Trade Murphy and Borbon to the Cards for Rasmus and a good pitching prospect. Fair?
Rasmus plays CF for you and mashes in Arlington. I checked out his defensive metrics and he has one positive and one negative year, just like Borbon. For those of you who know more about Rasmus' defense as well as these metrics which I am largely ignorant of please fill me in.
You have Rasmus play CF and you rest Hamilton and Cruz for 10 games a year by moving Moreland to the corners while Hamilton backs up CF. Alternatively, you just get more games for Vlad by sitting Rasmus for 20 or so games.
By trading Borbon and Murphy for Rasmus and a good pitching prospect you gain a 25 man roster spot which could be occupied by someone else, not sure who. Moreland could be your 80-90 game 1st baseman as well as your 4th outfielder adding flexibility to the roster.
What sayest thou?
That would be the sickest offense if I am right that Vlad needs rest to return to old form, and we would only lose out defensively at catcher against LHP (is Treanor really that much better than Napoli at C?) and possibly 1st base depending on how good Napoli is there but that is more likely a wash.
