... for Frankie Francisco.

I guess he's the part-time DH, part-time 1B, and part-time Catcher.

January 25, 2011 at 2:29 PM | Unregistered CommenterScooby Dude

I love this. I think we just found our 25th man.

January 25, 2011 at 2:29 PM | Unregistered CommenterLfloyd

Totally agree.

January 25, 2011 at 2:33 PM | Unregistered CommenterScooby Dude

And what a shot for the Angels. This is going to be a nice addition.

January 25, 2011 at 2:33 PM | Unregistered CommenterLfloyd

Wow, I'm sort of in shock. I think I like it.

January 25, 2011 at 2:33 PM | Unregistered CommenterJoe

Could it be that Napoli is going to get flipped, could this just be the first wave?

I doubt it but is that possible?

He probably is just our 25th man.

Unless, of course, this is the end of Matt Treanor's roster spot, and we're still looking for a 25th man.

Trade Treanor and sign Vlad?

The best hitting bench in baseball?

January 25, 2011 at 2:42 PM | Unregistered CommenterJoe

HOLY SHIT JD IS A BADASS!!!!!!!

January 25, 2011 at 2:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterJoe

I think a Treanor trade needs to happen at this point.

How about Treanor for Juan Rivera?

BWAAAHAAAAHAAAHAAA

Suck it Angels!

Definitly no Vlad without a trade now, but I'd rather have the flexibility that Napoli gives us.

This was a link in the column about the trade on Yahoosports:

Wondering how Mike Napoli the player (as in PLAY-A) and Josh Hamilton the ex-play-a-turned-preacher are going to get along...

January 25, 2011 at 8:49 PM | Unregistered CommenterWWJDD?

@WWJJD

What you know about Napoli that I guess I don't? We have any LA based posters that know more about Napoli on the day-to-day? Is he a nice personality addition?

January 25, 2011 at 9:21 PM | Unregistered CommenterTre

In what I gathered scanning the Angels backchannels over the years, is that Napoli is not really seen as a "good" clubhouse guy or a "bad" clubhouse guy I don't think. And he wasn't one top raise a stink over having to DH.

Not sure if he's a ladies man or indulges in the night life like WWJDD alludes to, but I don't see a 28 year old guy with an MLB paycheck in LA enjoying the fruits of his labor as a personality flaw.

As long as there not hittin lines in the dugout with wash im ok with him bein a "PLAY -A

As one who usually loathes spreading rumors, I'll apologize first & then say I found some stuff on the Web that suggests Napoli likes the alcohol and the ladies. Not that there's anything wrong with that - my point wasn't to be judgy, but just to wonder aloud how that would work with Josh, if true. But Josh is an adult, and he can't reasonably expect everyone around him to have his same moral code. At some point he'll have to be able to watch guys doing stuff that he can't do, and be okay with it. Who knows, maybe he's already there.

Which I found on the internet, as well. I would imagine the Rangers are cognizant of that -- at least more so than the Mariners were aware of Josh Lueke's offenses -- and intend to monitor the situation, and it probably won't be a problem so long as Napoli isn't coercing Hamilton into hitting up strip bars, but it is interesting in that the Rangers have actively worked towards promoting a squeaky-clean image in recent years, with Hamilton spearheading the Rangers' marketing towards those of the Christian faith.

I don't think its just Christians who care about not being a strip club sort of a team.

I stopped caring about the Huntsville Cowboys because I just didn't want to keep rooting for a bunch of criminals, thugs, and play as, but Jason Garrett might win me back a little with his work ethic. If I were a New Yorker I can't see myself rooting for the Yanks either seeing as almost everyone on the team has a massive ego and don't even seem to enjoy playing the game.

I think its important to maintain some dignity in your players regardless of whether they are Christian or not, and reasonable to expect some moral norms as well regardless of whether you are a person of faith or even an atheist.

If the FO does this as a marketing scheme I'm fine with that because it translates to a real difference in the quality of the organization regardless of the motivation. If anything it is a testament to the power of the Christians in DFW that the Rangers feel they need to do that, but of course many in the FO might actually be Christian themselves and market it that way on purpose because they are also people of Faith.

I'm pretty sure none of these ramblings are meant to contradict what you said Joey, just thinking on the matter a bit.

There was a little story that I came across I think on yahoo a few weeks ago about Derek Holland, where he pretty much was confessing he had been partying too hard last year, and that Josh came to him and gave him the "come to Jesus talk." It wasn't clear if the outcome was Holland's conversion to Evangelical Christianity, or merely a curtailment of clubbing during the season. That story was actually what got me thinking about Napoli & how he will fit in here.

January 26, 2011 at 9:09 AM | Unregistered CommenterWWJDD?

I don't have the slightest problem with a single, rich, young man drinking and visiting a legal adult establishment. It bothers me a lot less than being preached at. It's not my scene, but I have no problem with it. You can't build a roster in prepetuity of only Christian Conservatives without hamstringing yourself by cutting yourself off from a whole lot of potential talent. I'm sure there are plenty of Jersey Shore fans in the Metroplex who need a Ranger they can relate to. This is all a far cry from the people of Pittsburg supporting their serial rapist QB.

January 26, 2011 at 9:19 AM | Unregistered CommenterScooby Dude

Scooby,

I'm not saying everyone has to be a Christian, I'm not opposed to getting Napoli because he may have low moral standars (of course we are talking about rumors). All I'm saying is that it is good to keep a general climate that values moral norms so that you don't end up with a team full of play as and thugs.
