What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
I predict that Vlad will sign with us. He will do so because he can't get a two year deal anywhere and it seems his only option is the Orioles who have zero chance of making the playoffs in that division.
He could play DH when MY plays the field for those 50-60 games (30 at 1st, 15 at 2nd, and 10 at 3rd), and fill in in the event of injury to one of our big bats while Moreland plays the CO, MY plays 1st, and Vlad DH's.
I believe Vlad values the friendships he made last year, wants to win more than he wants to play for a team like the Orioles for more at bats, and would take one year to take a chance at the Series over one year to play for a team that doesn't have a chance.
With Vlad's bat in the lineup which will be hot with so much rest we would not need to rest Cruz and Hambone at DH, we could rest them for up to 15 games flat out, sit them down while they whine and complain. Everyone needs rest and if that is how injury prone sluggers have to get it then so be it.
The biggest loser would of course be Murphy, which I don't like at all, but it is probably better to have Big Bad around than to give at bats to Murph.
If we get Vlad I would expect Murph to be traded. If Juan Rivera had trade interest, I can't imagine David Murphy wouldn't. I would hate to see Murphy leave, but if we sign Vlad, we probably can't keep Murph around.
How many years of club control do we have left on Murphy?
If its only one or two trading him wouldn't hurt as much, but if it is three or four trading him would hurt real bad for just one year of not having him around for a Vlad signing. I love Murph, one of my favorite players but he might have to be traded. He deserves to play everyday anyways.
Didn't Murphy just go through arbitration? So that means we have two more years of control on him after 2011. In that case I think its a borderline call depending on who you get in return.
I don't mean go through arbitration, I meant avoid arbitration.
Murphy has 3 seasons left of team control including this season. I suspect Vlad would take 550 PAs with Baltimore before he would take 300 here.
If Vlad was brought in, what would happen to Young's playing time if Vlad proved to be a better hitter than Young, and Moreland proved to be a better hitter and 1B defender than Young?
Of course, if, as I suspect, JD is actually trying to trade Young, then this all makes a lot more sense.
The most games Young would be docked is 20 over the entire season. I suggest taking the little reality pill that Joey took in saying we ought to be realistic that Young's playing time will not suffer. The only way Vlad works is if he doesn't take Young's time in which case Murphy has to pay and be traded and Moreland has to take 120-130 games.
Aside from your desire to see MY traded would you bring on Vlad if he were willing to take 300 PA's over 75 games? He could also PH a lot. In this scenario you would have to stomach MY at 1st for 30 games, 2nd for 15 games, and 3rd for 10 games so as not to take too much time from Moreland, and Murphy would likely be traded. I think I would only do this if we could get something for Murhpy as after 2011 he has two more years left and is an above average hitter.
Vlad will take 200 PA's less because he will have one more chance at the Series then next year he can go wherever will give him more PA's.
He will, he will, he will, I just know it, hes going to sign with Texas and Young is staying.
First, they aren't trading Murphy.
Second, the only way Vlad comes here is if he accepts the role as 5th OF, occasional DH, and pinch hitter. From what I can understand from all the little things that have been leaked this winter about Vlad and Texas, they haven't signed him because of that very sticking point - they didn't want him as the DH - they only see him as PH, but he wants to be a starter. Now of course, all that could be made up - but if it's true - I really don't see him signing here, unless just NO ONE else wants him - you know, the Jermaine Dye story - if it's either get 200 AB as a bench player or not play at all.
But this entry is misleading - no one is saying that this will happen except Joe - it's pure speculation. Meaning, Scooby, that Texas is certainly NOT shopping Young around so they can grab Vlad.
Not that they wouldn't like to move that albatross - but seriously - what fool GM would take on Young's contract?
The part about signing Vlad that bothers me is Wash's reaction. If Wash shows some restraint and limits Vlad, he could have a huge impact. I like his "uncle vladdy" persona, and I would love to see him accept a lesser role and come back.
We've been through this. Regardless of how things are set up, regardless of how many ABs Vlad is "willing to take", if we get to June, and Vlad is OPSing .900, and Moreland is OPSing .850, and Young is OPSing .775, and Moreland has proven better defensively at 1B than Young, then going forward from that point, Moreland will be the regular 1B, Vlad will be the regular DH, and Young will be reduced to Utility man. You always have to keep earning your giht to play. And if Vlad, Young, and Moreland are all on the roster, I'm fairly confident that once things shake out and push comes to shove, Young will prove to be decidedly the worst hitter of the 3, unless Vlad repeats his 2nd hald of 2010, in whih case I would rather just have Cantu.
Joe, Michael Young's bat isn't very good for a DH or 1B. He's a sub-.800 OPS hitter. That's not very good for those positions. If options are brought in a DH, Young will end up losing ABs in crunch time. This was what I said about Thome as well- if he's right and repeats last year's performance, he takes Young's DH starts, because he's just a better hitter. Same is true if Vlad comes in and hits like he did in the 1st half last season- he's just better than Young, and will simply play.
Now, would I like to bring back Vlad for $3m and 250-300 ABs? Absolutely. Do I think he'd take that over 550 ABs in Baltimore? No. Is it possible that Vlad comes in and Young proves the better DH than Vlad? Sure. Vlad could give us 2nd half Vlad and be reduced to RH PH guy. Is it possible that Vlad come in and Young ends up as the 120-game 1B? Sure it is. It's not at all out of the question that Young both outhits and outfields Moreland. It's certainly possible that he's a wash against Moreland, in which case Vlad would DH most of the time and Young would play 1B most of the time.
But get real, Joe. If Vlad comes in and hits WAY better than Young (as he did last year), won't he be the primary DH? If that happens, and Moreland proves to be CLEARLY better than Young both at the plate and in the field, won't he be the primary 1B? Doesn't that make Young a bench player? Where am I wrong in that analysis?
Now, look, even if that all happpens, Young is still just one injury away from playing 120-130 games. But it is certainly possible that Young becomes a fill-in guy only.
I agree that Vlad would be you man in a pennant race but the likelihood that Moreland is taken over MY at 1st is very slim in the event he is OPS'ing better than MY which is not a slam dunk at all.
You are probably right about the problems that a Vlad sign could create with Moreland and Young. I'm just stirring the pot because I can imagine Vlad coming here to try and win the World Series. If you were Vlad wouldn't you forgo a couple hundred at bats for a real shot at the Series?
Trade young for jered weaver, a prospect, and cash. Let tony reagins ride his hot streak.
No, I would probably take the ABs if I was Vlad. He's working on the biggest prize for himself- a Hall Of Fame induction. And he needs ABs to pad his #s. He's a borderline case right now. I think 3 more years as a full-time DH, hitting .280 total with 65-75 HRs and 200-225 RBI is how he gets there. Doesn't he already have a ring from the Angels? Another one is probably not as important to him as a bust in Cooperstown. Wouldn't be for me.
Vlad doesn't have a ring. He was still with the Expos in 2002 when the Angels won. I think he might accept a lesser role because his resume IS lacking a ring. If he goes to Baltimore, which I have my doubts about because they already have Luke Scott, he probably would get more AB's but he can't expect them to finish above 4th in that division. Jim Thome signed with the Twins last year expecting to find ABs, and he did when Morneau went down. If Vlad signs with us I think it is because he wants to win, and is willing to let Wash use him as he needs him.
I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a ring, and was with Montreal that year.
I'd take the Series over the Hall any day!
Its about winning, not padding your ego for prosperity, its about winning it all! Its about the glory Scooby, the glory!
Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Rangers have "re-opened talks" with free agent Vladimir Guerrero.Rangers president Nolan Ryan told reporters at the club's FanFest on Saturday that he is willing to consider re-signing Vlad if the base salary of the new contract is reasonable and if it's for only one year.
Maybe you are right Joe.
Would Vlad REALLY get 550 at bats with Baltimore?
That is my problem with the Baltimore rumor. I don't know that any team is in a position to guarantee that. That is where Vlad rejoining the Rangers makes sense. We get to keep Vlad for his actual market value, and Vlad will probably have a better overall performance with more rest. We all saw what he did in his well rested first half, but he wore down rapidly. This might mean that MY has to prove he can play 1st in ST, Mitch Moreland starts the year at AAA. All of that is YTBD, but if we get Vlad for 3-5 million I would be excited to welcome him back.
Who has more glory? Hall Of Famer Tony Gwynn (no WS rings) or WS champion Willie McGhee (won at least one WS title, maybe 2, can't remember, was an All-Star, if I recall)?
I think a former SuperStar like Vlad would rather be remembered as an All-Time SuperStar HoFer than as a guy who got dragged along as a bit piece on someone else's WS title run.
That said, I would be thrilled if Vlad came back for $3m at this point. Maybe he wouldn't get 550 ABs in Baltimore, and he'd rather get 250-300 ABs here than 350 there. If so, fantastic.
I still think that this is yet another indication that JD would like to trade Michael Young. In the aftermath of Vernon Wells-to-Anahiem, it's clear that any player is tradable if you look hard enough for the right trade partner. I still think Young/Borbon/cash to LAD for Kemp might make sense for both sides and all 3 players involved. And JD is always full of surprises.
I guess it depends on what you value more, winning or honor. Would Vlad forgo a HOF induction for a Series ring, having that experience? He might just, he might just.
As far as the MY trade man, just keep dreaming Scooby.
No, I admit it is possible but I just think very unlikely.
In Vlad's case I don't believe it is HOF vs. WS. I think the WS absolutely solidifies his entry. As it stands I can see him getting in, probably not on the 1st ballot. Just my opinion.
We can return to the previous discussion. My gut tells me we sign Vlad. I don't know why, but I've never felt like he would really leave. I thought the other day how weird it will be to not see him in spring training, even though last year was his first ST with us. I know Heyman reported we had reopened talks so maybe something happens.
The story posted on Tim's traderumors site was clear that Ryan was interested in Vlad, but that Vlad would have to accept a reduced role, and would not be an everyday player (barring injury of course). Do you really think he's going to be open to that?
"I still think Young/Borbon/cash to LAD for Kemp might make sense for both sides and all 3 players involved."
You would probably have to add in a C Level pitching prospect to get LAD to accept but i like this trade for both sides. Kemp fell off the horse last season and i think hes fallen out of favor with the organization and he might need a change of senery, plus the owner needs that cash that TEX would be sending back. Texas could play Kemp in CF until Beltre is ready shift Kemp over to LF and Beltre in CF and either trade Hamilton, let him leave via FA or shift him over to DH
