We might all be too hasty. We cannot evaluate Michael Young's defensive effect on the team without being mindful of the other changes brought on by the temporary and seldom-used move.

If Gentry goes in for Andrus while MY moves from DH to SS, Cruz or Ham could go to DH for a game or two and rest and Gentry would exercise his legs in the corner outfield (or center, in the unlikely event that Ham is in Center). Since Gentry, for example, is a plus defender, and assuming he is a better fielder even than Cruz or Hamilton, then the defense in the outfield imporves,j while the defense of the infield worsens. It may be a wash! Furthermore, MY hits better than Andrus, for that game or two.

correction: MY was already in the game, so the offensive comparison is between Gentry and Andrus, but that is incidental. My point is about the defense that we all worry about.

No. First, if Gentry came on, it would be in place of Borbon. If Hamilton moved to DH, Murphy would come in at LF. Finally, improving your LF defense while getting MUCH worse at SS is not even remotely a wash. SS is the keystone to your entire defense. Also, Mike Young is likely to be laughably bad at SS, while none of our OFs will be laughably bad in LF.

If Murphy goes in, dont forget to include an offensive power upgrade of Murphy compared to Andrus.
