Look at our defense if Gentry makes the team for a Gentry/Borbon CF platoon (as Scooby suggested)
Its other-worldly except for 1st and Yorvit's arm (which I hope will be average or slightly below)

The only thing I don't know about is Cruz's speed, but isn't it at least decent?
This defense would be unbelievable. Question: who would play right when Cruz rests at DH? Murphy? Hamilton?
Well Reed Johnson already signed so I'm going with Gentry or Davis. I want our youth to grab hold and dominate.
Gentry can play RF when Cruz plays DH and he could play RF when Josh DHs and move Cruz to LF Cruz in Left Borbon in CF and Gentry in RF would be the best OF Defense in MLB
The only problem with Gentry is that he would take ABs from Murphy. I think that this might be the time to trade Murph anyway while his value as a potential everyday OF is fairly high after the season he is coming off of. I really like Gentry's speed and arm and think he could hit for about the same average as Murph but with less power and 20+ SB. I really like Glaus as a DH/1B platoon type and am not completely opposed to Manny. However, Manny would require a guarantee of plenty of ABs from the team he signs with, which makes it tough unless MY or Moreland is moved to make room at DH.Of all the options listed the most ideal situation is for Davis to prove himself worthy in Spring Training and is able to come in and be a lefty DH/1B/3B guy
I'm leaning fairly heavily towards Gentry. However, when Cruz/Hamilton rest, or when one of them DHs to rest Young, or so that Young cansub at an IF position, Murphy will play LF, and the remaining of Cruz/Hamilton will play RF. Gentry only plays as the vsLHP CF, the PR on days he doesn't start (with Borbon abailable to PR the rest of the time), and a late-innings defensive sub (probably moving into CF, and kicking Borbon over to LF).
I know Gentry's range is awesome, but how is his arm? I think getting his feet wet against LHP would be perfect for him, and for us for that matter. Keep Josh Hamilton out of CF, PERIOD! He is just too valuable too us offensively.
Joe: Gentry has a cannon for an arm especially for his size. I remember a play in late 09 I think where he threw a one hop strike to homeplate from about 50 ft off the wall along the RF line.
Gentry can catch when Yorvit DHs. Then move Murphy to SS to rest Andrus. Of course you have to give ABs to Moreland so every other week send him to AAA so MY can play SS while Davis DHs and Brandon Webb plays 1B. He hit .407 in hi school so that shouldn't be a problem. When playing NL teams bench Hamilton so he does't catch a cold. Then put Kinsler at 3B so you can give 2B back to MY. Trade Gentry for Lincecum. Ric thinks SFRAN would do that. Meanwhile ask O'Day to teach Holland to throw sidearm. Jow-what sayest thou?
I like the way you think Martin.
Most teams' 25th player is is just another player. Gentry's pluses fit well with the Rangers' current needs. RH hitting OF, perfect platoon match for existing CF (who projects to hit 9th anyway), fantastic defender, ideal pinch runner. His shortcomings (mostly that he's never going to hit much at the Big League level) can be easily covered by the fact that he wouldn't get many ABs as the 25th man, would bat mostly in a platoon-split-favorable way (against lefties), and could be pinch hit for in almost all key situations, because Borbon would always be there to take over in CF, and Josh can play CF, and Murphy can too in a major pinch.
I think Gentry could be a .300 hitter, but he will never hit for power. If he could get his OBP up with walks he could be a major run scoring and speed force as a possible lead off man or speed sub.
For my money i would go with Scott Podsednik. I know another left handed outfielder. Podsednik can play center field, lead off, career 279 hitter and steal bases. He is also cheap. Are we so confident in Julio Borbon and Craig Gentry that we couldn't use some insurance?
I took a look at Podsednik's numbers and he is very replaceable if the FO feels that they need backup in CF as the season goes on. I think its better to give our young guys a chance and see what they have, at least for the first part of the season.
