Forum > What would it take to get Josh Johnson?

What would you consider giving up for Josh Johnson? What other pieces do do the Marlins have that could be helpful in Arlington if we had to give up Hambone or Kins?

While any team would be interested in Hamilton, I think Florida could be more interested in Kinsler. could it be possible to pluck JJ and Hanley Ramirez or Nolasco or both in a deal that includes Kinsler and sp prospects?

Would that deal interest you?

For Josh Johnson I think we would almost empty the farm. The guy is a true stud pitcher. Problem is, Florida knows it. They extended him before last season I believe. Florida would have to be blown away with anything we offered. For both Josh Johnson and Hanley Ramirez? They can have whatever they want. Any number of players on the team, anything in or around the stadium, my first born son, whatever it took. I don't see either player being traded this season.

@Lfloyd do u think a trade including
Elvis Andrus
Martin Perez
Tanner Sheppers
Juracson Profar
Julio Borbon
Engel Beltre
Alexi Ogando
Mike Olt
for
JJ and Han Ram
would at least get them interested??

January 6, 2011 at 11:12 PM | Unregistered CommenterMartin

Martin, it might interest them, but what little fan base they have would absolutely revolt if they traded away 2 cornerstone pieces. Guys like JJ and Han Ram are rare and Florida is tryig to win while they still have these guys.

I actually find that to be a very fair deal however they would probably want to replace borbon and olt with a couple of young pitchers like Ross and erlin. I would take that deal if I were Florida and I would make that offer if I was Texas. However, in reality, it would do nothing short of kill me to see all of our young guys go to Florida and instantly drop our farm system to the bottom 10 while launching Florida into probably the top 3 or 5 in baseball. That would be as close to "trading away the farm" as I've ever seen

We don't need Hanley Ramirez. Why not just put together an undeniable deal for Johnson alone?

January 7, 2011 at 3:02 AM | Unregistered Commentertre

Probably a deal would have to look like Feliz, Perez, Engel Beltre, Scheppers and Profar for JJ.

Here's what you do to get Josh Johnson:

1. Wait until February and sign up for Fantasy Baseball.
2. In the first round, pick Josh Johnson, since you want him so badly.
3. There - you have Josh Johnson on your team.

In real baseball? Forget it - it ain't happening.

@WWJDD you get the double play for the day. Funny and true....

Wait until the trade deadline or close to it. By then, Marlins will quickly realize they cannot compete with the Phillies for this season or the next seasons. They will also cannot compete in the wild cards against teams such as Cardinals, Brewers, or maybe Braves who are clearly better than them. Braves will scare them because they 2-3 stud pitching prospect that are about to join major league team.
It will simply be better for Marlins to quickly rebuild so that they can compete in 2012 or 2013 season when the Phillies will getting older and worser.

January 7, 2011 at 9:40 AM | Unregistered CommenterDavid

Yeah, JJ definitely wont be traded before the season. The trade deadline is our only hope...which is what I think JD is thinking too. Prices are way too high right now bc everyone has hope. Once you take hope away with bad results...aces will be traded. We're just gonna have to wait it out unfortunately.

@WWJDD
If you dont want to hear about somebody wanting to get Josh Johnson DONT OPEN A FORUM THAT ASKS "What would it take to get Josh Johnson"

January 7, 2011 at 10:37 AM | Unregistered CommenterMartin

LOL Martin - you misunderstand my point. My point is that it isn't going to happen, not that one can't dream. Keep dreaming if you want!

January 7, 2011 at 10:46 AM | Unregistered CommenterWWJDD?

My bad i thought u were talkin down on all those who wanted to trade for JJ and i dont see why someone would do that on an open forum b/c i thot thats why it was made for everyone to come and discuss wat they wanted to

Florida is opening a fancy new park in 2012. They aren't trading away any players because they need to put the best product on the field to open their new ballpark.

January 7, 2011 at 10:54 AM | Unregistered CommenterLfloyd

As hard as it would be to see Elvis leave, I think you do whatever it takes to get a guy like JJ if you can. That said, I would never trade Hamilton. His value to this team goes well beyond his contributions on the field. He is our most marketable player and a guy people pay to see play. His story has brought much more attention to the Rangers than we would have otherwise received. Not to mention, he may just be the best all around baseball player on the planet right now. I don't think I would trade him straight up for anybody. But I am biased...big time. I read his book, I have his jersey, he is my favorite player right now and among my favorites of all time right up there with Nolan and Pudge.

I know that's not the point of this topic, but he was mentioned in the OP....

I agree with Lfloyd... This team thinks they can win and they want to win now. They're trying to rebuild without going into actual rebuilding mode. They're in a tough division but I don't see them wanting (no matter how many top prospects you offer) to move Johnson. Their rotation is not that great and without him, they're even less likely to compete. I think it's similar to the Grienke deal in that we have prospects who down the road might be something great, but this team in order to move Johnson would need guys that can play now and help them win now, in return. That's just something the Rangers don't really have. Even if they offered Holland/Hunter, Perez, Beltre, Scheppers, Profar and Ogando... I don't think they'd accept. They'd probably want something more like Kinsler, Holland, Perez, Profar, Beltre, Scheppers and maybe they'd give you Johnson and Infante in return, but even still... (I'm just pulling names out of my a** but you get what I'm saying).

They're not actively looking to move this guy -- you'd really have to wow them, and with major-league-ready pieces more than likely.

Don't know, but now that Garza is off the market, might need to get more agressive here...while Torrealba, Beltre (especially), and Rhodes are fine signs, pitching still scares me personally, as I'm sure it does most any Ranger fan.

January 7, 2011 at 12:00 PM | Unregistered Commenterafurr

i agree. pitching scares me most. i like cj, but it'll take another year like last year to prove to me he's a sure bet.

January 7, 2011 at 12:13 PM | Unregistered Commenterarb

I'm kind of glad the Garza trade looked pretty cheap all things considered...may help to set the market.

January 7, 2011 at 12:21 PM | Unregistered CommenterP1 Stefen

I agree with what most are saying on here. One thing I would like to point out is that the Marlins aren't very happy with Ramirez right now and just traded their only CF in Maybin. Let's just say that they have made a bunch of really bad decision because they absolutely didn't want to spend at all. They should have offered Uggla a better deal. I think when they take a good look at the situation, pitching is not their primary concern right now. They brought in Vasquez and have other good young arms. I think JJ will be moved before the break. I think if we offerd Kinsler/Borbon/Hunter/Profar/Beltre/Scheppers for JJ and HanRam they would take it right now. Maybe they want Holland instead, IMO I would include him in that deal.

January 7, 2011 at 12:31 PM | Unregistered Commentergtownfan

@gtownfan
You made some good points. I guess we're all under the impression HanRam would move to 2nd? or Elvis would? HanRam might take exception to moving considering his diva history. SS gets paid much more the 2nd. Also think your trade needs 1 more major name: Martin Perez.

January 7, 2011 at 12:40 PM | Unregistered CommenterP1 Stefen

Senario number two:
What about Wainwright and Pujols? Pujols is looking to get a monster deal, and will get it, and possibly not from St. Louis, and Wainwright is Wainwright. What would you give up to get this package in A-Town?
I would send them this package to begin the process:
CJ - about to get his own big deal, not sure if he fits here after this year with the rest of our home grown talent finally arriving.
Kinsler - would probably have to be included to get this deal done.
Borbon/ Beltre - either one
Profar
Perez
Scheppers

What makes you guys think that Texas could or would take on a big contract, ala Hanley Ramirez? Regarding Johnson, it's very similar to the Butler thread. Yes, Florida traded Uggla, but that fact likely makes it *more* unrealistic to think they'd trade away Johnson, rather than less, since they aren't going to completely gut the team of its moneymaking stars. I would think that when Johnson gets closer to his FA year, then you'll see him being dangled for a Texeira-like haul.

So Ramirez & Johnson? No way. Ramirez OR Johnson isn't even happening.

January 7, 2011 at 12:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterWWJDD?

to adam: There are three starters in our lineup whose value may never be higher, Hamilton, Cruz and Moreland. In the right deal say Hamilton/Holland for JJ and HanRam or JJ and Nolasco or Felix and Gutierrez I would make that deal in a heartbeat!!!!! When you look at production vs cost and filling the needs for this team in the future a deal like that is a win win win for the rangers. run production would be off slightly but we get the ace that we desperately need for less $$$ than it will take to secure Hamilton over the long term. This allows our sp prospects to get all the time they need to mature before they have to start contributing.

It may sound like I am really high on Hanley Ramirez but I don't think we need him either, unless we have to use Kins, Hamilton or Cruz to get the ace that we need.

You could also ask yourself, would the Yankees trade Cano and Mitre in one of those deals I mentioned above. IMO the answer is yes. It is not a given that we are going to get one of the elite ace's before the deadline. Making a huge deal now for the right piece could be the only move we can make this season.
