Forum > Pray for Ron Washington, JD
I don't see another move needing to be made.
Young is your DH. He will also get some time in spring to learn 1B. Therefore, he will backup Mitch at 1st and also fill in occasionally for other INF spots allowing those guys either days off or in the lineup as the DH.
Signing a guy like Thome, while it would be nice, he's going to want to get paid at least $7-8M and will probably only be looking to log 300 ABs, but now you're looking at taking away ABs from MY (who is your DH, not a 1Bman). Only a backup 1Bman... a backup. Think of how Arias played 1B last year. Everyone complains about MY at 3B... well, the guy hasn't logged an inning at 1B and some of you are penciling him in as your starter or in a platoon with Mitch. First time he misses a scoop, everyone will be yelling for Mitch, but you can't stick MY at DH with Thome stealing his ABs. And he's already going from everyday 3Bman to DH, now you only want him to DH against LHP?
I think the position players are set... for now.

I save prayers for important things like sick people, people out of work a long time, and for reality tv shows to get canceled.

Jordan,
I think MY wants to play the field as much as possible. If he could learn 1st he could play there 40% of games while mitch plays there the other 60. That gives you an opening at DH for Thome, and the other 10% of games, assuming Thome needs to play half of all games, could be freed up by MY playing other positions. Mitch would still get 60% of games at 1st.
The big problem with this as you say is the problem of whether MY can learn 1st. Committing to Thome would be commiting to this plan while the risk still exists that MY might be really bad at 1st. Does this mean that if MY is bad at 1st he would end up sitting for a substantial amount of games. I don't think that is acceptable, and that is why signing Thome would be a risk.
See my forum post "Thome Scenario Even with Betlre?."

face is below average at 3b, but he's still logged thousands and thousands of infield innings...he would be adequate at first.

You know how Catholics pray for the Pope?
Pray for Ron Washington and JD because the men have a lot of decisions to make and a lot of discussions to have with the Beltre sign and Young move. And also figuring out who to sign to backup 1st or DH. And I'm sure there's tons of disagreement, as there should be, in the organization. Lets pray that we get the best possible team when its all said and done, and that discussions are productive and congenial.
