Any thoughts guys?

December 23, 2010 at 6:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterGarrett

I don't like it. I don't see any point in adding another 40-year old lefty reliever. We better be moving Feliz to the rotation now, as deep as the 'pen is. Also, if you're going to sign a Type A free agent, why choose one like this to lose a draft pick for? would rather have had Fuentes for more money and not lose a pick. Just gotta hope last season wasn't a fluke and he can do it at least one more time.

Ryan, the rangers don't lose a draft pick because reds didnt offer arbitratio ... I think it is a quality move because he is just not a left handed specialist.

*arbitration

December 23, 2010 at 6:44 PM | Unregistered CommenterGarrett

Damn, thanks Garrett I actually just read that after posting that. this makes it a much better move, but we still need to hope he is close to what he was last season.

December 23, 2010 at 6:46 PM | Unregistered CommenterRyan from Waco

Ryan, Rhodes was a Type A free agent, but wasn't offered arbitration so the Rangers don't lose their pick. I like this signing for several reasons. A strong bullpen is going to be essential due to the questions in our rotation. Also JD has proven he can move bullpen guys for impact players midseason. The Gange trade landed us Murphy and Beltre, and Chris Ray (along with a prospect due to our financial situation) helped us get Bengie. This feels similar to those situations.

Sorry Ryan, I wasn't trying to be redundant. I am just a slow typer on an iPhone. When I started my post Garret hadn't clarified. Just didn't want to seem like I was trying to pile on.

What do you guys think... does jd have a trade brewing that the dfw media thinks he has?

December 23, 2010 at 7:17 PM | Unregistered CommenterGarrett

Hope so Garrett. What makes me think it might be in the works is the "big" news story of 2 days ago, that of the Webb possible signing/interest, has suddenly gone mysteriously silent. As has the Vlad and the Rangers "are on the same page" concerning a one year deal. We shall see........

December 23, 2010 at 7:37 PM | Unregistered Commenterafurr

I love this signing, the bullpen will be much better next year regardless of what happens with the rotation. We have so many more options with both the rotation and the bullpen than we had last year both with guys maturing and the signings we have made.

I have been feeling like JD has something big brewing. My sense is that we won't know until the deal is done, he's just a badass that way. But the good thing is that even if there is no big trade I'm pretty happy with where we are for next year. What about a trade involving Ian Kinsler for starting pitching, how would yall feel about that?

December 23, 2010 at 9:14 PM | Unregistered CommenterJoe

@Lfloyd

A bit of fact checking - Chris Ray was picked up in the Millwood trade:

I believe the player you are thinking of in the Gagne trade is our old buddy Kason Gabbard:

Details aside, your point about JD and this particular signing is not diminished in the slightest...

As presented, I have to ask; "If this is the solution then what was the problem?" That is a lot of arms. Five starters, Five Lefties, How many pitchers can one team carry? I can see trying Ogando and Feliz as starters but it smells of panic. There has to be more percolating someplace else for this Front Office.
There might be trouble in Paradise.

I like this signing. Let's see....that's Ogando, O'Day, Francisco, Oliver, Rhodes, and Feliz in the bullpen. That's pretty strong. I'm impressed. If we can sign Webb and Guerrero I would take my chances with this team. And maybe more to come?

Thats true John, T.R Sullivan mentions those deals should get done next week, and JD is exploring every possible trade and options, so we'll see but dont expect anything to happen this weekend

Caleb, regarding Chris Ray I was referring to JD trading bullpen players, not signing them. And If you read further down in the article that you posted a link to you will find that Muphy was indeed acquired in the Gange deal. Gabbard was as well, but since he didn't contribute much to the Rangers I left him off of my list. All of that aside I am very anxious to see what magic JD has up his sleeve this year.

December 23, 2010 at 10:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterLfloyd

Rangers will have to sneak/release someone off the 40 man roster when this is completed. It might be a good idea not to announce anything over the next few days. Signing Webb and/or Guerrerro would also require a 40 man roster move. Maybe the Rangers could work something out to outright Tobin, but after that? Drop de los Santos, Font or Castillo? Drop Rapada? Phillips? Moscoso (I think the Rangers could sneak him through)? Release Mark Lowe? After looking at the roster, there seem to be a lot of options.

Hmmmmm. Stay tuned.

December 23, 2010 at 11:35 PM | Unregistered Commenterjdb

jdb, why don't you tell us what you know instead of belittling others? It is much more constructive to have a conversation instead of being juvenile and putting other people down.

December 24, 2010 at 12:57 AM | Unregistered CommenterPhilly

Jdb,

I genuinely hope that you have a Merry Christmas. I am not being sarcastic or disrespectful in any way. I honestly pray you have a Merry Christmas.

I hope everyone else has a Merry Christmas as well. Go Rangers.

Great, now the Rangers have two players that came over on the Amistad.

Guys, please stop responding to jdp. He is a troll.

December 24, 2010 at 8:22 AM | Unregistered CommenterAdam in Longview

@ adam: sorry but have to this time

@ jdb: if u could just read a little yourself you would see that right after I posted that I corrected myself, so go to hell. I also want to note that I haven't made a single comment towards you until right now after you made that last comment towards me, however you must have just assumed that I am with the others that want you gone. How hard is it to just let things go and give people a little respect?

December 24, 2010 at 10:36 AM | Unregistered CommenterRyan from Waco

jdb, get a life already and show people some respect, damn a 6 year old acts more mature than your sorry ass
